You don't draft QBs in weak QB years--that's not luck, that's by design. You draft them in strong QB years unless you have the number 1 pick and there is one true stud. Drafting a QB in 2013 was a mistake and prevented us from drafting one of the quality QBs in 2014. _
First of all, I agree. We haven't drafted well on offense. But Rex absolutely gets blame for our lack of offensive competence over his tenure. We have developed almost zero offensive players under Rex (Who else besides Kerley?). Rex has been the ringleader in a "defense-first" culture, and unfortunately, the defense hasn't been anywhere near as good as advertised and no where near good enough to overcome having such a disappointing offense, week in and week out. As the head coach, you always assume responsibility for the team's performance. Always. Also, it's not like the head coach has zero input on drafts. He certainly has his voice in the war room on draft day.
You are right. The offensive line needs to be upgraded, but I don't think it's a priority. This team needs to upgrade it's team speed. But with Ferguson and Mangold, you have a good beginning. What needs to be fixed is everything around them. Winters is terrible. He probably needed to sit and learn, but unfortunately he was just thrust in before he was ready. Colon and Giacomini are average at best. What's funny is Jerry Jones was laughed at when he kept drafting one offensive lineman after another in the first round. Now the Cowboys O-line is the best in the league. The Jets have so many holes, it's going to take years for this sinking ship to be fixed. I'm starting to look fondly on the Tannenbaum years.
Getting a can't miss stud is not a fool proof plan, ala RG3. Players are going in the mid rounds and having success. I see Geno as a value pick, not a franchise pick. He was there when no one expected him to be so they rolled the dice. It wasn't a blunder the way trading up for Stephen Hill was. That said, you don't treat a value pick like a franchise player. Unless he sets the world on fire, which he hasn't, you keep your options open. Drafting Geno should not preclude the Jets from taking another, and then another after that if necessary.
Of course it's not can't miss, but you have to put your chips on the right player and pray it works out--BUT you have to develop them. What we did was we made a value pick with Geno but that effectively blocked us from picking a much much better prospect last year to really roll the dice on. _
Cowboys fuckin suck. Cowboys love to give up division leads in the last 2-3 games of the season. Fuck them
And this Mariotta guy is just another Geno imo, I dont want him. Its time for the Jets to build around the QB, even if its Geno Smith. Look at places like Arizona, Buffalo, Cleveland, not even a top 20 QB yet they can get production because of the guys around em. I dont think Geno is good but I cant declare that based off the fact is in the worst offense in the NFL right now, the worst.
He didn't have the same level of success as in the past but he did make the playoffs twice, turned a 5 win team into a 10 win team in his first year and won 9 or 10 games in 3 of his 4 years. The Cowboys finally did the right thing and shored up the O line. They have skill players at WR and TE. Give Romo time and he's a very good QB. He has some age on him though... so by getting better on O line they help keep him upright and around a few more years while they find his replacement... ala the Jets with D'Brick / Mangold.
Soxxx how many Oregon games have you watched over the last three years? Some of you guys are just ridiculous saying Mariota is just another Geno, because plays in A spread offense. He already makes pre snap adjustments from the LOS (something Geno never did), and has a crap OL, yet he still is performing. And most teams in the NFL run a spread offense, anyways. Also, look at the Texans they have all the talent in the world, but they have a below average QB and that is the reason they are 2 and 3. It looks like Idzik isn't a good talent evaluator, so our only chance of becoming a playoff team is landing a stud QB, and Mariota is just that.
Agreed. And if the Jets are fortunate enough to draft Mariota, we can get a WR in the second round, this year as well is looking like a deep WR class.
Idzik knows that the media would blame him for everything and say he was trying to sabotage Rex which is ridiculous. Rex has been given six seasons which makes him one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL. 4 years not making the playoffs with a plethora of 1st round picks on a defense that can't stop 3rd and longs is plenty of reason to get fired.
Not many, but I didnt watch many of Genos and I have been 100% right about him up until now. Well if the Jets get him I hope you are right, I am just not buying in.
Totally agree there are several significant differences between the 2 (i.e., footwork, quickness of release, pocket awareness…etc.) but the most glaring is an intangible. Geno seem to not deal well with adversity well. Mariota's o-line is shit yet he doesn't crumble as a result.
I'd rather take a shot on a QB and miss, than pass on him and watch him become a superstar for the next fifteen years.
