Russel Wilson is an absolute beast, light years ahead of Geno, and in my opinion, clearly better then luck. His poise is second to no one in the league. I've never seen a QB whose has his running ability who also stays commited to passing in the pocket as much as he does. he can make every throw from both in and outside the pocket. on top of that, he simply doesnt make mistakes, he limits turnovers whether he is running or passing. he is one of the toughest players in the league to defend, because he can beat you in the pocket and outside it. next to Peyton there is no one id put above him. he is on par with rogers and brees
Since i thought the Jets should AT LEAST have had a real Qb competition this off season, I am not sure whether I should be answering the OP's question. Smith Fans (who he seems to have less of today than before) would think me biased. And in truth I have some doubts about Vick, some of which were spoken to above. I fear he came here believing he really could compete for the starting job, but found out they wouldn't let him, that he's just being paid to stand on the sidelines, and collect his huge salary for essentially doing nothing. Nice work if you can get it. I do think he's a competitor, though. But that's part of the problem right now. I used to think Mike Vick would make this team a playoff team. Now I am not so sure. The Jets look worse than i feared. Let's go down the list: Brian Winters. OMG, still the worst starter on O. Really? I know Slauson is hurt right now, but one of Idzik's worst moves in the 13 off season was letting him go to have a competition between Ducasse and Winters. Add in that none of the other OL players Idzik has accumulated apparently are any better than Winters, and this right here is a trainwreck. The secondary. Yep. Worse than I thought. Pryor really is not a positive difference maker, and with Allen playing CB they have no rotation at safety. Meanwhile Walls is as bad as I feared (but no worse - some consolation), while Allen clearly shows talent, just not at covering receivers on the outside, and has awful hands. The Pass Rush. Another head scratcher. Coples shows flashes of improvement, but overall this front seven does not get to the passer. In fairness I think Chicago's OL is good in pass protection, and Cutler is not easy to bring down. But still, the Jets do not show much of a pass rush. Offensive Skill Players. Quite simply you have Ivory who is awesome, Decker who is very good but currently fragile, a glorified role player in Kerley, and a bunch of Jags. Ftr I loved the Johnson signing, but apparently Tennessee had him rated fairly. Add it up, and if I'm Michael Vick, I don't see this as a playoff team with me being the Qb. Still, I would make the switch. Maybe he carries the Jets on his back. It's worth the try. Smith is not about to stop turning the ball over. That you can pretty much count on.
You are way too down on Geno. Obviously he had some bad decisions yesterday, but at the same time, he has clearly improved from last season. Last year, he made those bad decisions pretty much every game (with a few exceptions), but also was unable to move the ball consistently. This year, so far, he has made less dumb decisions (he had none in the GB game, the int was caused by him being hit during the throw, and at least one of the turnovers in the Oakland game was just him running with the ball), and he HAS been able to move the ball consistently. Since he is only a 2nd year player, with not a great supporting cast (Winters and sometimes Colon are really effing him over in terms of pressure, and with Decker out, not a great receiving core), that improvement is enough to earn him playing time so he can show us whether he can continue to improve more. What's the point of putting Vick in in the big picture? A washed up, injury prone guy way past his prime, what do you think he is going to do with this offense? Do you want to motgage our future for a "possible" wild card entrance where we get bounced in the 1st round anyway? We need to see whether Geno can continue improving, like he did at the end of last season, because whether he does or not, that's going to be the key for us, to decide to keep building around him or get someone else next offseason.
If Geno gets pulled - it's time to put an end to the Geno experiment. I said this earlier in the off-season. He's been trending down for the last 6 quarters now.
Russell Wilson is a pure system QB. He wouldn't have this success without Lynch running the ball and Carroll calling the plays. He's just in the right place. Nothing wrong with that, because he seems perfectly molded for it
The bad passes Smith threw were not ones where the pressure was really on him. He's running out of the pocket, jumping up on his feet, throwing into triple coverage, throwing to the other team when the nearest Jet is a lineman. SUre he was getting pressured. That's part of being an NFL Qb. Do you not watch other teams play? That doesn't give him a free ride. Giving Smith more time could very well mean allowing him to kill the season with a continuation of turnovers. Your position is that the so-called improvement we have seen from Smith means he will not keep killing the Jets' chances with too many turnovers and other mistakes. Last night says otherwise. Last night looked pretty much like some of the worst moments last year. Yes he did throw some good passes, but he did that last year, too, even earlier (before that mid-season stretch of pure awfulness). But he's still making the same bad plays.
Yep, and it needs to be noted that this bad stretch did not come against teams with killer pass defenses. I feared both teams for their passing attacks, and then lo and behold both had apparent OL problems, and then Chicago's two top wideouts were all banged up. But between the season opener and last night Chicago lost Tillman and then a rash of other players, especially in their secondary. Did Smith and the Jets take advantage? Nope. When was the last time the Jets played a team that was more banged up than Chicago was last night? Last year in Atlanta? Probably the closest, but even that Falcons team was not as injured as Chicago was as last night went on. Yet the Jets could not beat them. These are the moments that try Jet fans' souls.
The Bears are middle of the pack in pass defense even with the injuries, and they're pure ballhawks. It's not like we played the Jaguars
Those pressures are killer, both because they ruined our drives (if say Geno scores a TD or two on other drives, those ints wouldnt look as bad), and because just in general, constant pressure rattles most QBs. Ask Tom Brady. If Geno is always expecting some dude to break free of Winters, that messes with his ability to calmly read the field and deliver accurate passes. Not every QB is an Aaron Rodgers or Wilson who can just scamper out of the way calmly. Mostly QBs, even good ones, have problems when their O-Line is leaky. And my position is exactly what I said, that Geno moves the ball down the field consistently this year, something he hasnt been able to do before. That's significant improvement. Also, less dumb decisions than last year. But we need a larger body of work to judge that, and that's why he ll keep playing.
Falcons team last year was awful, I think they won like 4 games. No pass-rush, no secondary, no running game. Just Matt Ryan, and the receivers. Yesterday, was the game where Geno was suppose to gain the trust of his coaches going forward - that was the step I was looking for. He failed in that regards. People that blame the offensive line have no idea what they are talking about. Geno had time, but he kept holding onto the football.
Give me a break. Did you not see the game? They were playing people off their practice squad. What do you call them, fourth stringers?
Smith's defenders last year said all his problems were the fault of everyone else. The OL, the receivers, the O in general, the defense, the ball boys, the team bus drivers. Enough with that. The fact is the Jets had the sixth best running game, many of the stat problems for hte OL were caused by him holding the ball too long, and objectively the OL was not that bad in pass protection. I know Winters is a problem. But the OL on the whole is not that bad. Ferguson last night had a great game. Mangold was very good, and even Colon looked decent. NFL Qb's do not get perfect pass protection. That is not an excuse for them to throw into triple coverage.
Ftr my point about Atlanta was how banged up they were when the Jets played them. If your point is Chicago is a better team than the Falcons were, I agree. But the Jets played them in Atlanta while they had Chicago at home. Plus Idzik Fans would say the Jets ARE a better team than they were last year. Again I feared this game before the injury totals added up both before and after the game. Even on Friday I was not aware that Marshall was really, (and I mean really as in at risk of not playing - I tend to discount by a grade or so the status reports on injured players (maybe I shouldn't)), hurting. ANd as the game went on, I thought Chicago was going to have to put their receivers in to play the secondary. I just can't recall the last time an opponent had to go so deep on their bench to field their D. And Smith could not exploit it. On the bolded part, I have said my piece about Winters, but on the OL as a whole, you are absolutely correct. Anyone watching the game who thought the Jet OL was primarily to blame for Smith's problems does not understand football.
And Geno would have won the Super Bowl last year if he was the QB for Seattle! In the words of Tony "Scarface" Montana "What you talking crazy for?"
I thought the secondary was gonna get torched but I'm really encouraged by what I saw. Pryor made a bunch of nice plays and deflections. He's getting better every game. Walls and Allen both played great, you couldn't have asked for more and at one point they both had back to back possible TD saving open field tackles for like no gain. What did you see from them that was bad? I think Walls is going to lock up that CB2 spot. The couple times they got beat for the 3rd down conversions on that last drive you can't even blame them, Rex got all maniacal DC and kept sending overload blitz after blitz and left them on islands like they were Revis. Ok Marshal scored one TD. He's one of the best receivers in the game. Bennett's scores one was a blown coverage I think and the other was Phillip Adams running the wrong way. So if anything the backup safeties got beat on but that shouldn't be a huge concern once Allen can rotate back.
Meh. Chicago's first TD pass was all on Walls. That was not good. I forget the other bad plays he made, but the larger point is that Ryan leaving them on an island he did to throw blitzes at Chicago. You play Tampa cover 2 all night, and your blitz totals go down. Marshall did not have a td, btw. The TD on Adams was Bennett's second, right? Pryor is concerning me because I don't see him doing much in pass coverage. I still like Allen a lot more as a safety. He gets beat on teh outside. What do we expect? It's not his natural position. Plus I think it's less of a problem for a safety that can't catch the ball than a corner.
Ferguson started out well, but he got beat badly several times toward the end. In general, the Bears harassed Geno pretty well throughout. The point though isn't to defend the 2 bad interceptions yesterday, it's that Geno moved the ball pretty well. In case some of you have forgotten, that's something we had trouble with with Sanchez, and with Geno last year. So while we still have a way to go with the red zone stuff, being able to move the ball is a significant improvement. And we played 3 games so far. In one, Geno had dumb turnovers, in the other two, he played much better.
so replace smith 63%comp 1:1.25 td;to ratio with vick career 58% comp 1.25:1 td:to ratio? sorry i don't see the huge gain. i want to see how geno reacts this sunday. another multi turnover game and we might have something to talk about
