The PI on Wells was a bogus call, agreed. However it came on the heels of a critical Jet mistake, the fumble by Saunders. Secondly, that PI call was only on 1st down with the ball already on the Jets' 40 yard line. What if there's no call and the Bears move the ball only 5 yards setting up a 4th and 5 at the 35? That's a makeable 52 yd. FG by Robbie Gould who's pretty much good money. On the eventual TD, Pryor was late in coming over to assist Walls in his zone. Again, bad PI call but set up in the first place by a Jet mistake, i.e. they put themselves in that position. From there, the non-TD call when Davis took Cutler's fumble to the house. There was the game in a nutshell. Bonus points to Davis for a very cool endzone finish to the play with the ball. End of 1st half. Second half, Bears move down the field with ease. Blown coverage by the Jets on an inside release (Jets twice totally blew inside release coverage last night). What follows is another Jets shooting themselves in the foot. Geno throws that horrible pick in the endzone to Nelson (who like Sudfeld in the Raider game) should've been more agressive in coming back to the ball to play defender. Bear DB ill-advisedly runs the ball out of the endzone and gets put dow by FB Bohanon on the 5, except for another stupid penalty, this one on Mangold for a late hit on the guy Bohanon already put down on the ground (undisciplined frustration-he should know better). Even with the 15 yard break, the Jet 'D' picks it up and Cutler facing a 3rd and 21 throws a tipped duck .... that Walls promptly drops. Yes, bad calls, but still......time after time after time, one Jet screwup after another. No screwups, we'd be laughing at the ref's screwups instead. Jets can blame themselves as well. I'd blame the refs if we were the Jacksonville Jaguars. We're not, we're Jet fans. We should expect better from this team, beyond the repeated stepping on their dick performance last night.
Totally agree that the muffed punt was inexcusable and instigated giving up the TD, but not only was Walls not guilty of PI, but instead, Jeffrey was guilty of offensive PI. It should have been 1st and 20 from midfield. That call was just . . . terrible.
And the Bears had 1st and goal at the 7 after the PI call and what did they do with it? TD. What did Chicago do when Marshall's TD was brought back by a penalty? TD. We've got to do a better job overcoming bad calls. Instead, we roll over, slump our heads, and lose. Email Goodell all you want, but he's not going to go back and reverse the calls. We control how we play after we get screwed on a call, and thus far, we aren't doing shit except folding like a cheap lawn chair when we face adversity.
Exactly, this is a mostly young team they don't know how to win. It's frustrating to watch but you hope they learn from it.
What bothers me most about the Davis fumble recovery is that we would have completely erased the early 14-0 deficit (getting a lead after trailing early is always a huge confidence boost) and would have been leading 20-17 with only a minute or so left in the half. We would have had all the momentum in the world . . . who knows where the game goes from there. It's just so frustrating.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/jerome-boger-terrible-horrible-no-150942327.html They need to fucking calm down on these plays. They promised they would call more offensive pass int. and I fail to see them doing it. This was a great play by the player who clearly has the rules stacked against them and as such it turned into a massive gain for the offensive team despite the offensive player clearly being at fault. I still don't understand why they constantly want to rule a player down and not let the play still go on. What purpose is it? Because of the small percentage that a play may be too inconclusive and the call on the field needs to stick? I thought it would be common sense to let the play continue, especially with all the technology and ability to review all scoring and turnover plays. I don't understand the premature whistle. You can see the play on review and can adjust accordingly. Why? This is textbook pass int. but I can understand the ball not being catchable to hold the whistle. Vereen isn't looking for the ball or having his head turned around, this always gets called in the NFL today and its one of the very first things a defender is taught when coming to the NFL. The 2nd picture has Vereen in the way of Kerley, that's a pass int. Of the 3 this article points out, this I have the least gripe with so I can't badger too much on this. Point is, I don't get or understand how these refs are taught. Does the NFL not go and break down the bad calls each ref crew makes? Are they not held accountable? There have been too many easy calls getting blown and it just boggles my mind how the NFL continues to allow such poor fundamental officiating transpire.
I agree with the walls pass interference.... if there was a call to complain about, its that one. it wasnt even close, and should have been offensive PI on top of that. The fumble call i dont see how anyone can complain about. thats something you see all the time. the refs are looking to blow the play dead when the player is down. the replay showed it was a fumble, but his knee was close to being down. refs missed it, but it wasnt a "bad call" as to were they blew it. those are human error plays that happen every week. the PI call on the other hand was a bad blown call. as far as missed holding calls, after rewatching the game, I only saw 2 of them. one was against harrison, on 2nd down with the bears on our 1, it was an incomplete pass. not sure we would have accepted it as it would have been half the distance vs. 3rd and long. not a full 10 yard penalty. the second was on douzable on a pitch to forte, which we stopped for a loss of 4 yards, again im not sure we accept the penalty.
I was suprised to see a no call on that last play on Kerley.... all I can come up with is that the ball was uncatchable(at least uncatchable in bounds) and the defender got his head around a bit at the very last second. either way it was a total face gaurd with contact, you'd think there would be a flag. my guess is they thought it was uncatchable in bounds
every team makes mistakes.... but good teams dont make countless mistakes, the same mistakes, week after week after week. if you constantly have 2-3 avoidable turnovers, and 5-6 avoidable pentalites, and 1 or 2 blown timeouts you cant blame anyone but yourself and even great teams cant conssitently overcome that. thats what makes good teams good and bad teams bad. consistently limiting mistakes vs. consistently making them
Are we sure that is the case? the pass interference on walls was on first down, the bears where at midfield. who is to say they dont still get points out of that drive? If the jets get 7 points on that returned fumble for a TD, who is to say the bears approach doesnt change and they dont come back and score 7 of their own? we simply can say it one way or another
how can you not say we had other opportunities? we had SIX redzone possesions. 5 of the 6 we were inside the 10 yard line. 5 times in resulted in a FG or turnover. 6 redzone chances is plenty of opportunties. its rare you get that many in a game
We didnt deserve to win. when you turn it over 3 times, one for a defensive score, and commit countless dumb penalties, you dont deserve to win. how about if we protect the football we win. our 2 interceptions cost us 10 points. we lost by 8. not sure there is really any reason to look further then that. had we played a solid game with limited mistakes, sure get on the refs. we have only ourselves to blame
It was absolutely catch-able if he wasn't being pushed out of bounds while the ball was in the air. It stings most because of the BS call against Walls in the first quarter and the obvious inconsistencies in how they're calling the game.
The whistle blown on Davis was the one that really sent me off the edge. The assholes at the NFL have placed great emphasis over the last two years about letting the play roll in those situations especially regarding turnovers within the last two minutes of each half as they are all reviewable by the officials. Complete bullshit. You can say whatever you want about the team blowing opportunities and silly mistakes which is what you get when you have a young team that is honestly not very good. All of that said, the refs made a huge mistake here that could have potentially turned the game. I don't think that anyone can deny that.
Great post, i agree with you on all counts, and after watching the game again I came away with all the same thoughts... 1) They arent calling offensive PI, and honestly, arent really looking for it. and they go on reputation alot on those. the Walls call is inexcusable, and im my mind the only call we should have a major beef with 2) The Cutler fumble... they want to protect the QB. it is clear as day from all the rule changes, and how they officiate hits and plays around the quarterback. you are ALWAYS going to see quicker whistles around the quarterback. I agree with you... on fumbles, err on the side of the fumble, not on the runner being down. you can always reverse the fumble, you cant reverse it the other way and grant the TD. But, as mentioned they are going to always be overly protective and whsitle QBs down earlier. With that said, I still cant have a major beef with that call. his elbow is close enough where in full speed at their angle I cant blame them for calling it dead. thats a human error issue, not a blantantly blown call like the walls play. 3) the kerley play i came away with the same conclusion... they had to not throw a flag because they thought it was uncatchable in bounds. other then that im really not sure why they wouldnt throw one
I'm not sure it was. Watch the replay if you can, the ball is really thrown high and deep. it would have been REALLY difficult, if possible at all, to catch it in bounds even with no defender there. either way, im not saying it should nothave been PI, im just guessing as to what they were looking at. if they deemed it was catchable, it has to be a flag. i expected a flag for sure... but if they were ruling uncatchable, i can kind of see that a bit
i dont think anyone is saying a couple calls didnt hurt us. i think the point is, they didnt cost us the game, and we compounded those mistakes by failing to execute after. After the PI to walls we allowed a touchdown on 3rd and long to an open WR who we assigned double coverage on. After the fumble from cutler and not getting a touchdown, we proceeded to get called for a penalty and go 3 and out wasting great field position, then failing to pin them isnide the 20 giving up that field position with a touchback on the punt. i think those things are being overlooked big time
