Agreed..I think our GM fell a little too in love with the "Moneyball" lots of picks concept. He kept reiterating the sheer number of draft picks we had all offseason and then proceeded to select a very small amount of impact players will those picks, relying on the volume to take care of it. I know projecting draft picks 3 games into a career is moronic - HOWEVER - did any of those WR draft picks move the needle for us as Jets fans as they happened? None of them even had the appearance of being a home run in a best case scenario. Jalen Saunders, solid enough player, but best case scenario is Kerley insurance. Shaq Evans?? This is what screwed us..Decker goes down and the WRs all move up a slot and our lack of talent becomes apparent.
We better get the top corner available this offseason no excuses I don't want one from the John Idzik bargain bin of old players with injury or character concerns..
I also think Calvin Pryor was a redundant pick given the makeup of our current (and future roster). D-line is loaded and young - should be able to control the line of scrimmage for years. With Rex, defense always is going to have passion and play tough. Team has a glut of safeties that can play the run and are OK in coverage. Yet still, we grab the safety who plays better in the box and is decent in coverage? He should be a good player going forward, but it doesn't really improve the makeup of the team - not what you are looking for in the 1st round.
I'm not exactly on board w/ the anti-FO agenda. I think Idzik is obviously executing a well calculated multi year plan to build a complete roster w/ a healthy cap situation suited for sustained success. But this is the one gripe I will agree w/. Yes Decker was a fine start to rebuilding the outside,Amaro seems to be coming along & we drafted 3 WRs..but c'mon...when Geno is staring down Kerley/Salas/Nelson/Cumberland in a do or die 2 minute drill...yikes. This has been a problem since 2011. The team has struggled at outside skill since 2011 when Cotchery asked out & they missed on the 2 veteran Spartans in Plaxico & Mason. The modern game is more & more about winning the outside. The jets refuse to adapt. What's the result? We may have the best combo of D/O line play in the league yet it never seems to consistently lead to W's.
I agree, but Pryor did make some coverage plays in the red zone tonight and for that I have to commend him. If not for some of his plays this game would have been well out of reach. He's on a learning curve, but what better way to learn than facing some of the top quarterbacks in football in a coverage role? Let's see how he does. He didn't really lay the wood tonight but he showed a lot of looks where he bluffed the blitz and rotated back into coverage. Jury is still out on Pryor. Keep in mind he missed a nice portion of training camp with that concussion
Pryor looks good, most rookies make mistakes and the kid is 3 games into his pro career. He will only get better. No one knew Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu would be who they were 3 games in.
One good thing is that Idzik has fired most of our old scouts and has a new recruiting coordinator. I don't know who he is but apparently he worked for the Cardinals. So that could be good news. As for the 50 million, either he's got something up his sleeve or he's really stupid.
It is partly about the best available player, but a lot of it has to do with intimidation and enforcement. You can't expect Pryor to be comfortable enough to start enforcing his presence 3 games into his career.
I don't know if he's washed up, but I'm sure he's wondering where are the holes. He probably never thought the Jets O-line was this bad at opening up running lanes.
