That is stupid logic. You give your best players the ball. You give the player who offers the most potential opportunity. Powell was picking up huge gains yesterday, he should have gotten more carries; more than Johnson. The Jets had problems in the run yesterday, and I think (speculation) it was the rhythm of the play calling. The drive of the pick, we were running fine. Marty should have taken control of the clock, been pounding the rock and taking a nice, healthy lead into halftime. That is on Marty (of course if the pick is a td instead than there are no complaints here). Bringing in Vick for cute plays that resulted in incomplete pass and a sack, hurts rhythm as well. We recovered the onside kick, the Packers D were on their heels, we were running fine and we passed on a down that would have been much wiser running on.
Powell is never going to break a 60 yard run for a TD. He's rarely going to score on the gainers he does get. He's just not that fast. The Jets have two backs right now that could take it to the house on any play. You can't give Powell extra carries in that situation. You need to give him the carries that help the team. You ask the Packers who they'd rather see carrying the ball against them between CJ, Ivory and Powell and you're going to get an 80% vote for Powell. That's not saying he's not a valuable back, because he is, but the Jets have better this year.
Truly speculation** Johnson couldn't get to the edge yesterday, Powell could have. I disagree about Powell not being able to break a 60 yd run, his pace is a great compliment to Ivory and Johnson style; quick and elusive. Johnson looked slow yesterday, that's not going to get it done here.
No justifying playing less Powell more Johnson yesterday. Sure CJ can take it to the house on a given play but Powell could have kept the chains moving which was far more important.
Sorry Brad, but it was a lot more than the running game that caused the loss yesterday. I saw absolutely no adjustments to Green Bay's d in the 2nd half. They had Geno on the ropes and the kid couldn't do a damn thing about it. His OC could have bailed him out with screens or draw plays or play action fakes or something to slow the Packers down. That did not happen. In addition to that, why is there this need to kill every promising drive with trickery? What is the rationale for bringing in Vick when everybody including the hotdog guy knows what's coming. I don't get it. I just don't get it. When is Rex gonna realize that blitzing is not the be all /cure all for a lousy secondary. Speaking of the secondary, they sucked yesterday. They got their collective asses handed to them on a paper plate. The running game? If CJ doesn't have it on any particular day, sit him. We have 3 capable backs on the team and you ride the hot hand. If somebody doesn't like it? tough. If Decker is all that stands between us and a winning season, we're in deep shit. He is not a game changer. He is not Megatron. He is a guy that had Peyton Manning thrown him the rock. Now he has Geno Smith and there will be a drop off no matter how much folks love Geno because Geno is not Peyton Manning. Our Oline couldn't stop anything at all in the second half. They were almost useless in running situations. The CS owns a lot of this. Lack of adjustments at the half, killing drives with trick plays that nobody falls for anymore. The list is a long one.
This is why we lost though. We couldn't run the ball. You say that Geno had pressure in his face the entire second half. You know what? You're right. Why did he have the pressure? Because the Jets couldn't run the ball all day. If they're getting 4 to 6 yards on 1st down like they were against the Raiders then the Packers have to sit back on 2nd down with the occasional blitz. Instead the Jets were getting -1 to 3 yards on 1st down and the Packers were blitzing a guy on 2nd and long. It's all about running the ball this year. if the Jets can do that then we're good. If for any reason they can't then we're looking at an up and down season and 8-8 at the end of it. It really isn't that hard to figure out. All the little errors will go away when the Jets are rushing 35-40 times for 150-200 yards a game. They'll all be magnified on the days the Jets can't move the rock like yesterday.
We couldn't run inside when they had 6 in the box because we were spread out with just Geno and CJ or Ivory in the backfield. It was just a bad day for the offensive line and the blocking schemes. It didn't help that the Packers spent all week beating themselves up because the Seahawks put up a deuce on them in the opener.
GB calling card recently is they CANNOT stop these plays consistently. The Jets showed they are willing to let Geno run it, should have kept going to the well because GB has not shown they know how to properly defend it.

I agree with most of the original points. The only issue that I have with it is it kind of concedes that this team isn't a legit Playoff team. What's going to happen in a Wildcard game against, say, the Bengals? They load up and shut down the run. Then that means we automatically lose? I want for this team to be versatile. I think Geno has enough in him that we can rely on the Passing attack if the Run game is shut down on that particular day. Maybe it's not all there yet, but I still don't want admit defeat if one aspect of the Offense isn't flourishing.
Whenever we quit on the run game, we usually lose the game. Geno is still growing, we need the run to open up the pass. Ground & Pound?
It wasn't just not being able to run the ball.... Outside of Decker our receivers got no separation. Kerley is good but we really need someone else to step up. The teams we play the next few weeks are going to stack the box, blitz and make Geno + our receivers beat them. We have a glaring need for a deep threat to keep defenses honest. Ground and pound won't work with the offensive teams we are playing, especially with our perilous defensive backs. We need to get someone with speed and shake up the bottom of the receiving depth chart. After Decker got hurt our receivers did nothing to help Geno out. These next few weeks will be high scoring games... Not a doubt in my mind.
Yeah and the pick was from Winters who to me was a revolving Door and I'm surprised he did not get Geno killed. CHANGE needs to be made there.
I like our running backs a great deal individually, but as a group they are flawed. All three are inside runners. CJ isn't an outside running back, no matter how they wish he was. None of them are, and it's a problem.
We had 146 yds of rushing ... end of story. Ground and pound is a myth. The only reason any team should focus on such a strategy is because they don't have a good passing game. You think we could've closed the game by running the clock? We were up 21-3 and about 5 minutes later it was 21-16? It took the Packers about half of a quarter to get back in it.
Marty needs to do a better job pay calling if this team wants a shot in these next 5 games. He needs to stick with what works, running the ball, read option and play action. The Jets are a physical strong team. Marty needs to play to that strength and stop being cute. None of that dumb trick play shit that takes forever to develop and starts 5 yards behind the LOS. No need to even run those type of plays at all.
The Jets went from a dynamic offense in the first quarter to running the ball up the middle every motherloving single time in the remaining 3 quarters, even though Johnson is a perimeter runner. No screens, maybe a slant here and there, mostly it was vanilla aside from a baby's handful of shots down the field. I was looking for Schotty on the sideline during many breaks. At some point, if Rex isn't concerned with the offense, he should fucking stop dictating the overall philosophy of the offense.
This has been the biggest problem with Rex's tenure. He's kept some really incompetent staff on the offensive side of the ball while losing decent staff members.
