Most of this being abused by other fans stuff never came up until AFTER he quit. Why wouldn't he have said something right away when it was happening? You know the Jets would have put a stop to that ASAP. The man's an icon. Sounds like sour grapes to me. I have read where he was becoming a regular Ceasar in the stands. Expecting special treatment and harrassing people who didn't want to partake in his "cheering." I give the guy credit for starting it up and being a passionate fan. But it became something else at some point IMO.
Well, I don't sense that he wants to come back permanently.. He's said he wants a younger guy to take up the mantle and replace him long-term, and that he turned down the Jets' request to come back as Fireman Ed. He could be lying though, but I do believe him (maybe foolishly though.) He also denies getting free tickets and whatnot, of course- though I don't think he'd admit it if he did get free perks. This is based on my hearing him do an interview with the "Jets Twit Podcast." If he genuinely felt that it was going to lead to actual fistfights, it's very reasonable that he stepped down. If it was just anti-Sanchez shouts, then he should've sucked it up like you said. I could see it being either. I think he wanted to unite the fan base around Sanchez, but he didn't realize was that the fan base was already united. Against Sanchez, well before the Buttfumble game. I think he felt that he could influence the fans, but while he could get 80,000 people to stand up and scream, but he couldn't get them to un-see what'd been happening on the field. Then the Buttfumble game pushed it over the edge- at that point the notion of supporting Sanchez felt ridiculous. As for picking the right moments... I definitely agree. Do it during the first kickoff of each half to fire up the team/fans, but for the most part, save it for defensive 3rd downs (especially 3rd and long.) Ideally, you'd do the chant repeatedly on those big third downs.
why would you do a J-E-T-S chant on 3rd downs when the team is on D? that's when you make noise. I hated when he would start a "D-Fence" chant on 3rd downs, made no sense. The Jets chant should be for opening halves and after we score. other than that the fans should be loud when we are on D.
I dont blame him. I heard he had shit stolen off him, people treating him like shit, etc. Did he ask for it? Maybe. Is he a puss for not wanting to put up with it? Maybe. It must have gotten serious enough that he was worried for his own safety & possibly others. Its simply not worth it at that point.
And the Jets chant is loud, disrupting their offense because they won't be able to hear each other. I guess the silence before the chant starts up is problematic though. He'd have to do a different version on defense- but the point is, I think you want the stadium rockin' with noise when the opponents are on offense. I disagree about doing the chant after every Jets score. I wouldn't like to see it after a field goal that takes us up 3-0; maybe later in a game though. If you do it after every Jets score, fans will lose enthusiasm for it.
Fair enough. He should have had a better chant for defense though. I agree that you want pure noise on D, so the Jets chant shouldn't be done there.
Gotta agree here. J-E-T-S is a fantastic chant, but it should be saved for kickoffs and TD's. Defense is for constant noise.
Not like our stadium is ever loud anyway. Last year at the Raiders game the Jets gave out these little clapper things. Obviously I used it when we were on defense trying to contribute to making the stadium louder. The guy in front of me turned around with a disgusted face on and said to me "Are you gonna be doing that all game?" and told me to quiet down. I wish our fan base wasn't a bunch of corporate assholes and more like actual football fans. I guess it comes with being a NY team.
when we are good it's loud, when we aren't it isn't. add in so many real fans are priced out, it's a different atmosphere than the old Stadium.
Last time the stadium was rocking was last year's game against the Saints. That was a great crowd atmosphere. Don't bring Fireman Ed back.
Maybe the corporate assholes in the stands will care about the false start incentives for fans. Probably not.
Fuck Fireman Ed. Cheerleading is for women anyway. If they want to have someone start the chant they should get a hot ass broad in a bikini. I'll volunteer to be the guy that lets her sit on my shoulders.
home opener 2009. that was one of the best crowds we have ever had. everyone got up and was loud when NE had the ball, that is how it should be every game.
Yeah, sitting on your shoulders facing you while you're 'facing her' ya carpet-munching 'hedge hog' : )
