lol, is true but when Nagle turned from a wonder boy preseason player to a forgotten QB after a less than 1/2 season - his infamy was how extreme his popularity was - that didn't happen to Jet QB's that often - it usually takes a full season or 2 to sink in.
Sparano is currently the locker room boy in Oakland. Haley is still with the Steelers. Any objective analysis would not agree they are equally bad.
The Steelers choice of replacing Arians with Haley was terrible. He has not been well received by the players or fans, and simply has not improved the O at all despite having Big Ben and very good receiver options. Oline has been a weakness however. Put him on the Jets with much less talent, a less well structured organization, and completely different personality and coaching style from Rex, and i believe it would have been a recipe for disaster. I'm not defending the Sparano move either. At best he is an Oline coach and potential Asst Head Coach (like Callahan). Never should have been made OC, and been given playbook and playcalling responsibilities. That is clearly not his strength.
Steelers offense looked much better at the end of the season when Big Ben decided to actually listen to Todd Haley. Haley is a respective coordinator. I am glad we got Marty instead though - that's what I meant when Rex took a step back with Sparano but 2 steps forward with Marty.
we could have had Bill Walsh running our offense in 2012 and it wouldn't have mattered. Sparano is terrible but he never had a chance w/ the tebow stuff, losing Holmes and keller, having Chaz Schilens start, rookie Hill, etc...
Honestly, all critical analysis aside, it has been so fun having Rex as a coach that if he got fired Rob Ryan would be the only way to mitigate the pain of losing Rex. As a disclaimer to all you internet GM's out there, relax and have a little fun, I don't think Rob Ryan would be the proper replacement, but it's a fun pipe dream to have. However, I don't think we'll have to worry about it. I've had a blast having Rex as a head coach. If you want to talk about his "down years" the since 2010, you can take that up with our old GM, although Rex's biggest fault in his tenure was hiring Sparano imo.
Of course you meant respected, and that is correct. Back has backed himself into a corner, but yes I also think Marty is a better OC than Haley, by at least some. Ftr Haley did an awesome job in Arizona as the OC. He may have had some issues with Ben in Pitt, but their strong finish showed they have worked things out.
Was Haley really that 'awesome' in Arizona? Or was Kurt Warner, Fitz, and Boldin the real reason? He hasn't done anything w/o them, and he had major issues with Boldin while there. Also had issues with Bowe and Cassel in KC, now Ben in Pitt. Could only imagine how it would have been with Holmes. He's a wannabe tough guy who has never played football on any level, and not very respected by players at all. Again, my argument wasn't that Sparano is a better OC than Haley. It was that Haley would have been an absolute dreadful choice for the Jets. I agree that Marty is head and shoulders a better fit for the Jets, and as an OC in general.
I didn't like the Big Mouth Rex that always talked big shit but never backed it up. I absolutely hated "The Circus". Today? I neither like nor dislike Rex. He's the coach of the New York Jets and because of that fact, I want him to succeed. If Rex some how gets this team to its second Super Bowl before I die, great. If not, he's good for the entertainment value if nothing else. Who else would I want to coach this team? No one that's available right now as retreads just seem to bring nothing innovative to the table. I root for the Jets not because they're Super Bowl contenders or front runners. I root for the Jets because they are the Jets and the Jets are my team. So, if Rex Ryan never wins the SB, he won't be guilty of anything every Jets coach since Weeb hasn't accomplished. If someone else is coaching the team, I'll still root for the Jets. It really doesn't matter to me who's coaching or who's the GM. All I care about is the end results. If the Jets are competitive, I'll watch them and be happy. If not, I'll watch them and bitch about it. Either way, I'll be watching and rooting for the Jets. Expectations left town a long time ago..
I love Rex and the reason why is he wants to be here as coach of the New York Jets. Lou Holtz, Bill Bellichek, Al Groh, Herman Edwards and Bill Parcells didn't want to stick around. These players play hard for Rex and that is one of the most important qualities he brings.
Sure. I feel better about this team than the 1-15 team too. I'll just wait and see how the season shapes up first. Based on 2013, I don't see any reason to go apeshit like some people about this season. Now depending on how 2014 plays out, we'll see just how big the 2015 dreams should be.
The part the overly optimistic don't like to discuss is their implicit assumption that last season's 8-8 record should be seen as some kind of floor. A perceived improvement in the roster, for which there certainly is some basis for seeing, therefore should mean that the Jets will do even better than 8-8 this coming year. Hence the optimism. But the schedule looks tougher, particularly for the pass D, and some of last year's wins were accomplished in shall we say less than impressive fashion. In short, I don't see 8-8 as a floor.
