I was watching NFL AM yesterday and Jamie Dukes said Rex is his most underrated coach. To paraphrase, he said Rex is polarizing but perfect for NY and can coach as well as anyone. I think Rex has come a long way as a HC. If the NYJ had 2014 Rex as coach in 2009 maybe they could have gone further. Having a competent OC definitely helps, as does 4 years of HC experience. Coaching up players has never been a problem with Rex, but I think he's learned a lot about managing games, strategy, and managing his coaches.
Rex has gotten better every year as a HC. He's already an excellent motivator, and knows much about the Xs and Os. With Marty there to help him, the sky is the limit for Rex. Only coach(es) I would replace Rex with are the Harbaurghs, Belichick, Sean Payton, and Pete Carroll. Unfortunately these coaches are employed with a respective team. David Shaw would be my other choice. I like Rex here and I hope it works out in the long run.
I would tend to agree, but I can't count how many times i have heard people speculate whether Ryan can survive another season without making the playoffs. Or more accurately assuming he is not given some automatic pass, like too many injuries. For myself I would also add Smith failing and bringing down the season, since I would lay that more on Idzik. The fact is people are talking about Rex's future.
You must think I always disagree with you, but how did Rex replacing Schotty with Sparano show he had gotten better that year? Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Or the way he stuck with Sanchez in 12? Some of his post game pressers in 12 would make for suitable case studies in borderline psychotic behavior. And I tend overall to like Rex. Heh. But I do not think one can look at Ryan's career as some sort of Hegelian progression. There were some steps backward at times. I hope he works out, too. We've seen far worse, and I don't see any obvious upgrade available out there, not now, anyways.
It's fine with me that you disagree it's a message board for discussion always good to get different points of view. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take 3 steps forward. I will think of 2012 as a learning experience for Rex. A humbling experience for sure. And remember in 2012 we wanted Todd Haley to come in as a passing coordinator that year (which backfired). I think the 2012 season really required Rex to take a step back and learn about what he wanted in an offense and so on and so forth. Rex benched Sanchez in 2012, but McElroy wasn't that much better, he almost got himself killed in that Chargers game. 2013 was a good coaching year for Rex Ryan in my opinion, I think he can really build on that - he made better decisions. I hope it works out with Rex, I don't want to start over all over again. If we make a bad choice at HC then that sets the franchise back years.
IMHO ur suggestion would be akin from jumping in the deep end of the pool to jumping into the most, most deeper end of the poll. Shucks next year Shanny will be there for sure & he has a couple of rings & would qualify since he is not now a coordinator. Maybe Woody could lure Gruden from the booth or Cowher from CBS also? They all have the experience required to be HC & they all have rings which is something the NYJs have not had since 01/12/69. There are also several ex HCs now working as coordinators
I actually think in many ways Rex has gotten worse every year. Rex does a lot of good things, he does a lot of mediocre things. He is a middle of the road HC that is actively destructive at times to the offense. He is very unbalanced in his approach. I think Woody loves him, much like Jerra and Garrett, so we would have to collapse terribly for him to be fired, Even if he is though I do not think things would change much as Woody has hired three coaches with the same general philosophical approach to football, and I think it unlikely he all of a sudden brings in an offensive oriented guy.
You didn't really state how he gets worse every year. There maybe some mediocrity in regards to offense, but he made the right decision in hiring Marty. What decisions as a Head Coach does he make that makes him worse each year?
has gotten worse every year? i think last season was quite possibly his best as a HC. start of year: year 1 of a rebuild, major salary cap limitations, 3 new coordinators, completely green starting QB, very little talent or experience on roster, complete shit show of a media storm looking to bury Rex and the team before the season even began. end of year: great decision in Marty, a quieted media, rooks playing well and showing signs of development, won some big games, and had team playing inspired football to close the season (rather than throwing in the towel). 3-3 in the division, 8-8 on the year with meaningful December games. I'd say that's a pretty damn good job for year 1 of a rebuild, and shows good promise for the direction we are headed. I'm not sold on the experience/talent of our roster yet, but with these coaches, i'm hopeful we can take another step to 9 wins, with more meaningful December games.
The last 2 years have been his best 2 years, w/ the talent we had(especially on O) to get 14 wins the last 2 season was miraculous.
I find that a really circular argument. You perceive our talent level to be really bad and assume we will win few games and then when when we are mediocre it is because of fantastic coaching by Rex. More likely it is because we have average talent (overall) with an average coach that leads to average results. Here are some the reasons I believe he gets worse each year: 1. Forcing the offense to continue trotting the wildcat out even though it hasn't been successful for years and hurts the momentum of the game 2. Regressing defense despite spending all of of our high picks in building it since he has been here: Defense points: 2009 14.8 (1st) 2010 19.0 (6th) 2011 22.7 (20th) 2012 23.4 (20th) 2013 24.2 (19th) His vaunted defense is worse every year in points allowed. Yet, each year he has had an influx of 1st round defensive talent that he helps choose, and the defensive makeup becomes more and more his guys. Defense, yards allowed 2009 4039 (1st) 2010 4664 (3rd) 2011 4993 (5th) 2012 5174 (8th) 2013 5359 (11th) Worse every year. Maybe he is not quite the defensive genius people think. 3. In game management has gotten worse and worse each year especially challenges and late game clock management 4. Progressively more and more conservative against teams he feels are defensively strong
Not sure what you mean about Todd Haley. It was not the decision to want him that backfired, since he didn't come to NY. It might well have worked out if he had. What backfired is them saying to themselves that Sparano probably needed Haley's help, and then when Haley said no and went to Pitt, the Jets said forget it all we really need is Sparano, which arguably is the worst CS staffing decision they made since, well either Edwards or even further back. I also would say 13 was a good year for the CS more than specifically for Ryan, since it was hiring Marty that was the main area of improvement over 12.
We had no talent, we needed gimmicks and we haven't used the WC much. the D has gotten worse as they have transitioned from older to younger, this D has the makings of the best ever under Rex. a lot of those points were given up by O/STs. The D's haven't been great(weren't even in '09/'10) but they have been good and kept us competitive w/ some bad Os. show me examples of the in game mgmt. and late game clock? EVERY fanbase whines about late game clock mgmt. It's wide to be conservative when Chaz Schilens is a starter and when Greg Salas is a starter. w/ 90% of the coaches in this league the Jets are 4-12 at best last year.
