Nelson and Salas by virtue of being healthy now vs a year ago elevate this competition as well, in addition to the draft picks and Ford.
I don't think Kerley is really in the competition to start on the outside at this point, although he can play all of the receiver positions. Figured it would be a no brainer that Nelson would be the favorite at this point. Things can change in camp, but I think Nelson will start for the Jets opposite Decker to start the season at least.
Let's see how camp goes. I think the starters will be Decker and whoever stands out in camp as likely to make a real impact outside. That could be Kerley, Nelson, maybe even Hill if everything goes just right. The Jets have a bunch of people who could play in the slot this year. They need to figure out who will play well outside.
Not an ideal #2 WR (more like a #4) but we'll see what he does in his first few starts of the year. The biggest questions on this team still remain heading into this season. QB, CB and WR. They will dictate if this team can be anywhere close to playoff caliber this year.
I don't mind Nelson starting opposite Decker to start the season, I think we'll see a rotation from him Hill ( and Evans later in the season ) unless one of them really turns it on in TC.
I can see kerley being wr2 in 2 wr sets and than going to the slot with nelson/hill etc playing outside on 3 wr sets.
I definitely think he's capable of doing it, but I haven't seen anything from the team to indicate that he's in competition for one of the outside starting spots. He's already proven he can be effective on the outside when called upon.
I really hope Shaq Evans makes some serious strides this summer/preseason, as he can be the #2 we all want.
In reality, whoever wins the number 2 WR job is going to be the 4th or 5th option in terms of getting the ball, so if it's a guy who's not flashy but also not careless then I'm all for Nelson having that role.
I think its an oversight. I agree kerley should very much be in consideration for an outside spot. Put the 2 best wr's on the field and don't worry about position designation
I can't see Kerley doing anything on the outside consistently except getting man handled.. He is much more suited for the slot full time.. With that being said, I wouldn't mind seeing him slide outside when Saunders comes in... Just to shake things up.. But to think Kerley can make the adjustment to the outside full-time...... I just don't see it. I want a 6'3 + beast out there.

Everybody wants a 6'3" beast. But that may not be a realistic option. Looking at the roster right now there is a very good chance kerley is the 2nd best wr on the team. He can and has been productive spilt wide.lets not sell him short because of measurables. Good technique can overcome physical ability
Hopefully a deep threat emerges from the wide receivers group [Stephen Hill, Jalen Saunders, Shaquelle Evans - to an extent] Evans has the ability to beat you anywhere on the field - short / intermediate / vertical. I really hope he emerges. Saunders could play a D-Jax type role for us. Stephen Hill, we will just have to see.
Nelson was great when he joined the Jets last year. Most importantly: He played like a professional and gave 100% every play. He gained my respect for sure. If he plays his way into the #2 spot, I don't mind at all.
Posted a link in the other thread from an interview with Sanjay complementing Hill using his body and contending for balls with CBs. Lets hope it translates. Also talked about Kerley's ability to play anywhere and Deckers ability to get open. Mentioned Shaq was pretty far behind though.... This offense is going to look really different this year. I'm excited. Go USA!
I mean it's encouraging Hill is having good practices, but we need to see him perform on the field during the regular season. It's his 3rd season.
100% agree, hearing that he added a little bulk and has no issues with his knees right now is a positive. He needs to be able to take a few hits without disappearing. Even with knee issues he was still having last OTAs/Camp he was in an encouraging production role for the first few weeks before he got lit up a few times. He could be the difference maker in the offense this year.
Kerley is a slot receiver, not really a option to put him on the outside, Nelson is the obvious choice, but I guess that depends on what Hill does
