Some may believe that, I just believe the gap will close between the two on the field - making Geno the de-facto starter.

this brings me back to my original point. geno could go either way, we don't have a big enough sample size to go on,but its pretty safe to assume what we are going to get out of vick. it's right there in his career stats and it's not that good.he made a career with his legs, played out of his head for 1 year-4 years ago and has been a sub 60 comp% 43td 49 t.o. passing and rushing the last 3 year. i don't see that as a lock to be the best qb on the roster( my initial point)

This is not right though. Geno has issues but there's no question he can throw the ball. He just needs to fix some of the mechanical things related to running a pro offense. Tebow can't throw the ball. He's Bobby Douglass all over again.

True - I was referring to the incompetence level though. There were games last season we would have been better off with Tebow at qb.

Gonna go ahead and touch on that Chad part. It hurts my heart that his shoulder was so messed up.. That was our franchise guy, and he would have been in the same conversation at this point as Brady, Manning, Brees. Would have been in that elite tier of QB's no question.

    Back on Topic.. Start Geno.

I think Vick's qb rating has gone up an average of ten points since he went to Philly. It's also a misleading stat to include fumbles since he rushed so much, which I think he does less of with the Jets. His int. percentage is much below Smith's.

He actually had a better rookie season than Sanchez, and his rookie season was really not that much worse than either Manning. For the really bad stretch that Geno had, not only did he literally need to play with street free agents, but players he had almost no practice time whatsoever, and because of that we got so conservative on offense it really put Vick in bad situations. As has been said several times. with just Kerley on the field he was a much different player.

Peyton Manning threw more passes than any other QB in the league as a rookie, completed the 2nd most passes, was 5th in TD passes thrown and passing yards.

Please do not ever compare Peyton Mannings rookie season to Geno Smith's because it sounds stupid as hell. We could only wish Geno's rookie year was not that much worse than Peyton Mannings.

Matthew Stafford looked like warm dog poop his rookie season and has turned into a decent NFL QB. Eli looked like total garbage as a rookie and decent QB in the end. Alex Smith, bleaaarghhhh and competent game manager before everything was said and done.

It's not like bad performance by a rookie QB is the kiss of death, it's just a negative indicator at this point.

Of course, and again so far as I can tell not a single person is saying Geno cannot improve. It's the apparent assumption that he's going to make big strides that I disagree with. I also whole heatedly disagree with those who think he doesn't need to make big strides.

Geno had a pretty unique rookie season IMO. Comparing him to past rookies seems pointless. He struggled a bit but also had flashes for 12 games, and had 4 of the worst games I have ever seen.

For those four games he had nothing but garbage around him, and it showed. When his top receiver (Kerley) actually played, he showed a bit of promise. That isn't an issue anymore. They have brought in at least 1 quality pass catchers, and perhaps even more. Bringing in Decker/Amaro/Saunders/Evans/Enuwa can only help, and wont hinder his development.

I think Geno starts with a short leash, if he sucks, than you have a quality backup in the waiting. And you know that you have to make a move for QB next offseason.

I think the assumption is based on him being good at WVU in a non-spread and then having two years in the Air Raid that he now has to largely forget in order to advance as a pro QB.

I'd be much more skeptical if he hadn't done well his sophomore season before the Air Raid was installed. There's good reason to believe that with some grounding in the WCO he will improve this year. If not, well then he's depth chart material and the Jets will find another better prospect to be the guy.

I would be shocked if many people were basing there assumption on that. I think most simply over rate his last 4 games of his rookie season and assume he'll be better in year 2 because he's in year 2 oh and he's a Jet. EJ Manual isn't expected to see this type of growth.

Manuel didn't have as big an adjustment as Geno did coming out of school. Florida State doesn't run a wide-open spread the way WVU did. They're not exactly a text book pro style offense either but they're much closer than Dana Holgorsen's Air Raid.

Manuel also had more talent around him last year in terms of play makers.

Do you have examples of Air Raid QB's who took a big step in year 2 in the NFL?

This is true, but couldn't you also say that a lot of the detractors put too much emphasis on those terrible 4 games in the middle of the season?

I didn't say too much emphasis - I said over rate. Big difference. Geno DID show improvement the last 4 games of the season.

Geno is kind of unique in that he wasn't recruited to be an Air Raid QB. The guy running WVU's program changed after he was recruited and brought in the Air Raid after Geno's very successful sophomore season running the offense.

You can't really compare him to guys who were recruited to run the Air Raid. For one thing his arm is much better than most Air Raid QB's.

Geno had one set of expectations based on 2009 and 2010 and then Oliver Luck hired Dana Holgorsen in 2011 and everything changed.

I'm not calling you out or anything. Just joining the conversation and trying to offer a different perspective. The point I think is, evaluating Geno right now is very difficult. He had 4 good games at the end of the season which is overrated by optimistic fans, and he had 4 terrible games that people overemphasize without really looking at the situation fully.

I have no problem if people don't think Geno is the longterm answer. There is a very legitimate chance that he never will be. I just don't think pointing to 4 games in the middle of the season and deciding he sucks is a smart move. Especially since he was benched and recovered from that.
