lol ..... think about it, we have a show called "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" Compared to the 1950's, adults today are like a bunch of kids left home alone, getting into the cookie jar, jumping up and down on furniture, throwing things around and painting the walls. It's called "liberation", or "toleration", or "less repression". Any attempt to regulate said behavior, using well-thought out ideas, reason, or even common sense, is dismissed as not important, and tossed aside. Then it's back to more self-destructive behavior, wrapped up in a candy-coated colorful shell. ....oh sorry, time to get back to football...Stephen Hill sucks, but he might suck less this year, because he decided to "repress himself" (eat right, train hard, and work on personal growth), self-regulating his behavior in order to work on his game and improve himself. He must be crazy, repressing his carnal desires, urges of the moment, delaying gratification to train to accomplish his long-term goals.
This thread has literally drifted to major BS, but in another apparently less consequential thread from OTA where football is actually discussed Hill has received a good first impression. It appears that most observers at OTA were quite impressed ,and surprised, with Hills performance. Of course the response might very well be that OTAs don't mean squat....but had he dropped a few he would have been crucified. Go figure. Wish this kid nothing but the best. Hope he lights it up this year. He is a Jet and if he gets it together we will much, much improved. I really could care less if he grew or shrunk as long as he is becoming the player we hoped when we drafted him.
I read all of that and it gave me some hope for him. But some of those reports also mentioned that he has had strong OTAs, before, which is correct and why I only feel SOME hope. I'm not rooting against him, it would be a freaking dream coming true for him to realize even 75% of the expectations placed on him, and it would make the Jets' offense a hell of a lot more versatile than they already would be. But I've hoped in one hand and shat into into a 50 gallon barrel for a lot of Jets project players in the past decade and a half and that barrel always brims first. I need to see this guy play well during the season, and with hope, the post season. But I'll settle for the regular season right now.
I actually really liked Nelson, but the more I think about it I'm starting to realize that he's a very average receiver. A lot of us were impressed with him because in 2012 we had guys like Chaz Schilens in starting roles, so when we actually had a guy like Nelson who could make plays when called upon in the lineup, it was refreshing. That being said, I think he's a very solid safety blanket. He's not the type of guy who's going to change the game with a huge play, but he'll do everything you ask him to. If a guy like Hill or Evans or even Enunwa can come in and be that huge playmaker then that's awesome. If we don't find a gamebreaker in training camp, then I'm content throwing Nelson out on the field. There are much worse #4 options in the NFL (Decker, Kerley, Amaro being 1 2 and 3)
Nelson is an above average possession receiver in an injury prone body. Similar to Cotchery. He'll never be great or a highlight reel, but he can get the job done when the better receivers are blanketed.
I didn't see this earlier but I appreciate it. I was kidding around earlier too but I'm glad you weren't sure and responded with this crazy shit. You are one crazy mofo joe, keep up the good work
I think people are going to be shocked by Saunders. The dude had almost twice as many TD's in college as Steven Hill has had in all of his College and NFL experience combined. Just watch his games against Alabama and Notre Dame (not just kick returning) and he obviously has a chance to be special. People need to stop worrying about his size too. He is 1 inch shorter and 7 pounds lighter then Desean Jackson, who a good chunk of the Jets fan base who begging for them to sign. As for Hill. I just don't see it. He wasn't that good in college. He has done next to nothing as a Jet to make me thing he can be a good player. We all talk about how bad the Jets receiving core was constantly. Well the 2 worst guys by far were Hill and Holmes. Holmes is gone, and in my opinion I don't think Hill is far behind. Maybe the Jets keep him this year to see what he can do, but I would much rather see a rookie get a shot. All 3 guys we drafted were far more productive in college then Hill and he played in a triple option offense where he was wide open half the time. I am glad to see many of you are optimistic though. If he figures it out and ends up being great I will be right there cheering him on, but he is going to have to make leaps and bounds the likes of which rarely happen for that to end up true.
It's year three so it's a make or break year for Hill. With the influx of talent the JETS have added at WR with Decker, Ford, Saunders, Evans, and Enunwa, Stephen Hill will have to play lights out to make the roster. His potential has not translated to a solid performance on the field. He may have the build of a Randy Moss and even be wearing his number as well but anything short of him playing all 16 games and having at least 50 catches for 800 yards and at least 5 tds will most likely result in him being a goner after this year.
Sadly this isnt even close to true. Holmes was our 2nd best WR ( despite the hatred here he was still a good #2/#3 WR ). They were tied for 4th in TDs ( sadly with 1 ). Hill and Holmes were top 4 in first down catches for the team, Behind Kerley, Nelson, and Winslow. Both Hill and Holmes had the 1 and 2 longest plays from scrimmage last season. Holmes also had the most catches of 20+ yards. With Greg Salas, Saaslim Hakim, Ben Obomanu, Josh Cribbs, and Clyde Gates on the roster I'm not sure how you can say those 2 were even close to the bottom, No less "worst by far". Hill had more catches then all 5 of those guys combined. Most of those guys won't even be on an NFL roster come Sept. Our WRs were sad last season, But those 2 guys were not the main source of the sadness.
Lights out is an overstatment, They will keep 6 or 7 WRs this season. Decker and Kerley are locks, no one is arguing that. ( 2 ) Saunders is pretty much on the roster from what I've read as a backup to Kerley / special teams ( 3 ). So that leaves 4 spots with this the pool to select from Makes D Nelson S Hill J Ford S Evans Maybe? G Salas Cuts C Gates M Campbell Practice Squad H Saalim ( PS ) V Hazelton ( PS ) Q Enunwa ( PS ) Anyone know if Salas is still PS eligible?
I'm on record saying Hill gets cut after the preseason mainly because I think he'd be our 6th or at best 5th receiver on the depth chart and he doesn't play special teams. Receivers on the bottom of the depth chart have to contribute in some other area to make the team. But I hope Hill proves me wrong and finally lives up to his potential. Among his many problems is the fact that he can't stay healthy for a full season. That's a big concern also and something to figure into keeping or cutting him. If he starts to play to his potential but can't stay on the field it's still a waste of a roster spot. I know that he took some monster hits last year but he's gotta show that he can play the whole season, and not disappear for games at a time when he is playing. He's worse than Keller was at disappearing for chunks of games!
The Jets under Rex has always kept no more than 5 receivers. So based on that this is the opening day receivers IMO. Decker Kerley Nelson Saunders Hill Cuts Campbell Gates Salas Salam Ford PS Evans Enunwa Hazleton
I would venture to guess that Evans will make the squad over either Nelson or Hill. Obviously it depends on what kind of camp he has, but the skillset is similar to that of Nelson and Hill and it's not going to be hard to be better than either of them.
I agree they are likely to keep 5. I think the decision to keep 6 will hinge on how they feel about Hill though. I don't see Evans getting cut and put on the practice squad because they will lose him if they do that. Ill go with Decker Kerley Nelson Saunders Evans Battling it out if they do decide to keep 6: Hill, Enunwa (probably headed to taxi squad), Ford, Salas. The rest will likely be cut, but I'm not going to rule out a dark horse making a run and bumping out one of these guys ahead of him - especially if he plays his ass off on special teams.
There's no way they keep 7. and theres no way they reserve 3 practice squad spots for WRs.. you only get like what 6 or 8 of them? they wouldn't use 3 of them spots on the WR position.
This isn't true, The past 2 seasons we've had closer to 7 on the roster, though your'e right we only have 5 active at one time. Some of these were due to injury but I don't think it's fair to say that we'll never have more then 5WRs on the roster, and it's just not true that Rex has never kept more then 5 on the roster. If anything this shows that we'll probably keep an extra one around. 2012: Edwards, Gates, Kerley, Schilens White Holmes Hill PS: Royce Pollard 2013: Hakim Holmes Kerley Nelson Salas Hill Gates Cribbs Hazelton PS: M Campbell, Dwight Jones
