    ^ This.

And despite the fact that the demographics of this country are going to favor a "born-in-the-USA" sport, and despite the fact that most if not all kids have played basketball at some point in their lives as opposed to the considerably less ('some of us') who've played ice hockey, and despite the fact that basketball represents year-round, coast-to-coast availability (e.g. could be as simple as nailing up a rim, and a lot more gyms than ice rinks)..........despite all that:

what in hell do TV ratings have to do with a thread whose question core centers around the words "in PERSON?" .....especially when you consider the fact that hockey is the sport that is least served by watching it on a television screen vs. watching it live. The speed of the game, etc. does not translate as well to TV as the other sports. The other sport that's up there with it 'live' (imho) is football in that you can see "the whole/big picture' away from the ball as well......only problem (NFL-wise that is) is the interminable TV timeouts that can really screw up the flow of a game (and often a team's momemtum).

I think Allen Iverson paraphrased can better explain it:

"TV ratings?.....It ain't about that... I mean it's... It's not about that...We're sitting in here in a thread about watching a sport "in PERSON" and I'm supposed to consider TV ratings?!! I mean, listen, we're talking about in PERSON, and now you want to talk about TV ratings? We now talking about TV ratings. Not the game itself. No, not ... not the game that's best watched "LIVE." Not the game, but TV ratings man. I mean, how silly is that? ... And we talking about TV ratings ...we're talking about TV ratings man. What are we talking about? TV ratings? We're talking about TV ratings, man. [laughter from the media crowd] We're talking about TV ratings... We ain't talking about the game. [more laughter] We're talking about TV ratings, man. When you come to the arena, and you see hockey LIVE, you see everything, right? But we're talking about TV ratings right now. We talking about TV r..... [Interrupted]
    • Reporter: But it's an argument that's continued to be raised..
    • Iverson: Man look, I hear you... it's funny to me too, I mean it's strange... it's strange to me too, but we're talking about TV ratings man, we're not even talking about the game... the actual game, which is what matters... We're talking about TV ratings ...

hockey live is vastly overrated, it's better than on TV like most sports are but it's not some crazy difference. People like basketball more b/c it is a better sport w/ some of the world's best athletes playing it.

The only benefit to a live game is the flow of the game like you mentioned. You don't get constant TOs for commercials or strategy.

By the way, my argument wasn't that TV ratings tell the story. TV ratings tell the story of popularity but I didn't say that is why I like basketball better in person.

"Hockey is vastly overrated" is an opinion (however amusing), and just that: an opinion.

Allen, please explain it to junc:

Here we're discussing FACTS, specifically the 'fact' that hockey is an exciting sport to watch "in PERSON" and suddenly we're now talking about opinions?
....It ain't about that... I mean it's... It's not about that...We're discussing a 'fact' and now I'm supposed to consider an opinion?!! I mean, listen, we're talking about a 'fact' and now you want to talk about your opinion? We now talking about opinions. Not the fact itself. No, not ... not the fact that hockey's best watched "LIVE." Not that fact, but an opinon. Man, I mean, how silly is that? ... And we talking about an opinion...we're talking about opinions man. What are we talking about? An opinion? We're talking about an opinion man. [laughter from the media crowd] We're talking about an opinion... We ain't talking about the game. [more laughter] We're talking about an opinion, man. When you come to the arena, and you see hockey LIVE, you see "THE FACT" staring you right in the face, right? But we're talking about an opinion right now. We talking about an opini..... [Interrupted]

    • Um, ok......

"hockey is an exciting sport to watch in person" is an opinion. pretty much all our discussions on this board are opinions.

Just like "hockey live is overrated" is an opinion.....now to say "hockey live is VASTLY overrated" is overplaying it ..... whether calculated to stir up an argument, whatever, to use the modifier "vastly" is needlessly heavy handed and the poll numbers here confirm that on this, an NFL football-affiliated board. That in and of itself should tell you something......'cept that NOOOOOOOOOOOBODY can tell you shit. LMAO~! : ) ;)

pretty much all the discussions on this site are about offering opinions. I would think someone as smart as you would be able to pick up on that.

a poll of 30 people tells me absolutely nothing.

I enjoy hockey live and I enjoy basketball live.

I would much rather watch football and baseball on TV.

Saying hockey (live or on TV) is not exciting is a valid opinion. Completely warranted.

Saying the perceived excitement of live hockey is "overrated" is an opinion on OTHER people's opinion.

    It's stupid.

Except your opinion that the Jets would have made the playoffs last season if Mark Sanchez was starting. That's reality.

You know what I think is even more stupid? Your opinion about his opinion of your opinion of his opinion on other people's opinions! That's just my opinion on that. Hopefully your opinion of my opinion in regards to your opinion of Junc's opinion of your opinion of Junc's opinion of other people's opinions won't be too opinionated.

    yep, you got it.

Oh so agreeing w/ you guys makes it valid but if I say it it's invalid. Got it.

I give my opinions, I think hockey fans and those connected to hockey like to say that line b/c they are jealous they don't get enough attention. It's just my opinion and I appreciate everyone who cars so much about my opinion and I apologize for not always agreeing w/ your opinions.

Has nothing to do with agreeing with my opinion. I'm not "connected" to hockey or a big hockey fan now, even though I played hockey for 15 years and used to be a fan growing up.

My favorite sports in order are football, baseball, college football, college basketball THEN a distant 5th hockey. I watch very very little hockey and maybe go to a game a year if that. I'm not hockey biased.

Because YOU don't like hockey is fine. But to say people like me, extremely casual hockey fans VASTLY OVERRATE the thrill of the sport live is silly. I bet you every guy on here touting hockey is a MUCH bigger football fan.

Has nothing to do with jealousy, why would I care what anyone thinks about my 5th favorite sport.

Even casual fans of the sport think it's the most exciting sport to watch live. How is that VASTLY OVERRATING the experience?

again, I like hockey. it's way down the list but I like it. I just disagree that "playoff hockey is the best!" or that it is the best live. it is the quickest b/c they can't sell as much ad time but it is not the best for me.

Honorable mention: Olympics. I know its only every 4 years, but I definitely pay attention when its on. I wouldn't watch track and field, or swimming, or gymnastics on a normal day lol, but during the Olympics, its definitely exciting.

And since we are talking about live, I can say from experience, its even more incredible live. Swimming/Diving and Track and Field. Its difficult to go to every event so its best to just pick and choose certain things.

    A) where is it on your list?
    B) how do the sports you have played rank on that list compared to hockey?

Holy crap, totally forgot. Best sporting event I have EVER been to is easily The Masters.

Golf is not an exciting sport, I get some folks find it incredibly boring and golf live (or in TV) is nothing that can ever be described as "exciting".

BEST run professional sporting event, most beautiful venue, best organization that "gets it" more than anything I've ever experienced.

    NĂºmero uno.

The US Open tennis is usually a lot fun as well. I've been there a couple times and had blast each time. I'm not a huge tennis fan but I enjoy it when it's on.
