Don't forget in all of the discussions about WR that Amaro spent a lot of time lined up in the slot in college, and should be a much more aggressive threat 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage than Cumberland is. Rex always talks about 'being multiple', and that the ways teams like the Pats beat you is by throwing mismatches around the field, asking you to try to stop them. Especially in no-huddle situations where you've got the same offense on the field running multiple plays out of the same look, you give the defense fits that way. MM is going to have the opportunity to put Amaro at TE on one play and slot on the next if he wants, without a sub, and confuse defenses with different looks. Amaro can play slot or TE on consecutive plays, and if he draws a nickelback in coverage as a slot receiver on 3rd down- it's an instant mismatch. As a reminder, close your eyes and think of all the times we had Kyle Wilson trying to cover someone like Gronkowski on a switch. Now open your eyes and try not to vomit on anyone around you. If he draws a LB and goes vertical, he can clear out the middle for a WR slant. If he draws two LBs over the middle, it gives you a 1 on 1 on the outside somewhere for a guy like Kerley. You'd never put Cumberland in as a slot receiver, but Amaro can do that, even if it's just a running play to fuck with the heads of a defensive coordinator. Normally you'd leave a TE in to block on a running play, but, with Amaro he's a decoy out wide, could disguise some options and even without throwing to him, it gives you options for what you do with the rest of your WRs. If he goes in motion and lines up in the slot, it pulls a LB over to cover and gives you one less guy on the second level for your RB to beat for a big gainer. I don't think Amaro is the second coming or anything, but the fact that he's there makes him a problem defenses have to solve; that wasn't there last year. All in all, it's a good draft class for being able to do more at WR. We didn't get the one stud WR/game-breaker that we wanted, but at least we have options to work with. Last year we were really limited in our options, with few good WRs and a rookie QB. This year we should see more of a wide-open playbook. I'd love to have our offense get to the point where we're able to effectively switch between base offense and no-huddle, and go multiple with the ways we can move players around the field. We haven't had the kind of offense that can draw a defensive timeout just based on scheme alone, in forever. Some extra WRs now, a flexible TE, and a guy like CJ2 in the backfield...we can have some fun out there in 2014. (god willing). Looking forward to the season.
You are free to have an opinion, but Holmes was slowing down, and had an attitude problem. The team this year is still really young. Lots of young WRs, young QB, young guys on D. Last thing we need is him being a locker room cancer again. We got Sanchize out, Tebow out, Holmes out. Circus => out. Best to move away from all of that with a younger group of guys that all play hard, buy into the coaching and keep their mouths shut. Holmes has great hands, but can't separate anymore (from what I recall). I'd rather give his reps to a younger player that could still be on the team in 2-3 years if/when we're ready to compete for something special.
I love the Amaro pick and I think you have to include him with receivers because thats what hes gonna be...But I just can't understand reaching for guys like Saunders or Evans when there were so many better WRs on the board. Abbrederis, who was a four year player for Wisconsin and is a smart route runner, Ellington, who I saw play in person at USC and was really impressed. Smart, two sport athlete, makes plays after the catch, good hands. Martivis Bryant and DAT were there and were picked up soon after. Hopefully the team knows something we don't because I certainly don't understand it at all
I think your answer comes from the current depth chart. Sure we could have picked up one of those more talented "complete" WRs but that would have basically gave us a backup backup decker. Nelson already can step into deckers role if needed but we saw last season that if Kerley gets hurt we are lost in the slot. Suring up his backup/successor should have been priority #1 and it was. Priority #2 was providing competition at the burner position to either push or replace Stephen hill. picking up the WRs mentioned in your post would have still left us with a hole at Burner role and backup slot position. Plus with Saunders we upgraded our punt returns as well as provided depth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
FWIW, Evans was graded ahead of all those guys on nfl.com: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/tracker/by-round#dt-tabs:dt-by-position/dt-by-position-input:wr Not sure if the Jets worked him out privately, but from what I've read he had a killer pro day (4.4 according to nfl.com, Mora claims he ran 4.3) and if we had someone there... With his size and speed, feels like a sleeper pick based on scouting...i hope. Btw, Rex's son played with Bryant, if we didnt pick him its cause he's not 'a jet.'
I don't think that will happen. The Jets are, I think, tired of his constant injuries, inconsistent play, and poor attitude. He shows flashes of the great Super Bowl MVP guy, but disappears for games at a time. There's no long term upside to him, and I would much rather develop a new young player that fits in with Idzik's vision for the Jets.
I like Hill. I liked him in the draft based on the paper measurables. Eh, actually liked might be a little strong, and I'll have to say intrigued by him. I want him to succeed because he seemed to be so happy to be a Jet. With that said, I've never seen a human being look so incredibly awkward just running. Calvin has those measurables and incredible body control. I feel like Hill has those measurables and the body control of a baby. I really want him to put it altogether, but I think that he had to be the most raw freak athlete to ever step on an NFL field. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Well as I said, I'm not advocating his return. But it wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. We drafted 3 WRs and we might acquire more in the UDFA market. It looks like we're trying to acquire a whole bunch and see if one of them will step up. Hopefully it works.
It's not exactly Wesley Welker & Al Toon out there. I think we all know that. But, last year was a 16 game shit sandwich at WR, and we were stuck eating it every week. This year, we have: - Guys that can get first downs (Decker, etc.) - Competition at every spot (aside from Decker's) - Ability to play multiple formations with a straight face (at times, we all knew where the ball was going last year. This year, not so much) We do not have: - Explosive playmakers - Guys that draw double coverage I think that's a fair, logical assessment. Considering where we were at last year, I'll take it. We aren't the Nicks/Cruz/Manningham Giants, with Eli throwing them the ball. I get that. But, add another FA and a top pick in 2015's draft, and then maybe we have something to write home about. Until then, well....at least it isn't last year.
Abbrederis has major concussion issues. Remember Ryan Swope? Maybe the Packers could make something of Abbrederis considering they have Rodgers and their offensive system is generally good, but who knows. I can see why we didn't take him. Martivis Bryant won't be anything special. He's Stephen Hill part 2, only Hill didn't get the luxury of playing opposite Watkins. Maybe the Jet brass had that in the back of their minds, and figured we have Hill already. We already had Ivory, CJ2k and Powell. Where was DAT going to play? I can see your point on Ellington, but maybe they liked Saunders more. Who knows. Also, Ellington's commitment to football is questionable (doesn't he like basketball?).
DAT was a running back/receiver hybrid at Oregon, but in the NFL he'll almost certainly line up at receiver or be used as a pass catching back. KC's offense with him and Charles is frightening
That's fair; for a second there I thought I was accessing a different WR depth chart than everyone else.
I could also be wrong, but I think DAT had some character issues. I wanted Dri Archer in the 4th round, but he was taken in the 3rd round.
We're gonna run the ball, we're gonna play hardass defense with attitude, and we're gonna throw short passes for first downs and hopefully CJ can catch ball out of the backfield. We do that we'll be alright
Rooting for Greg Salas to make the roster. He played well in a limited role for us last year and made some plays. I've followed him since his college days here in Hawaiʻi, and dude can ball if given the opportunity.
Santonio Holmes? No! No!!!! Noooooooo!!!! They've drafted all anti-Holmes, and I'd love to keep it that way. I hate that guy.
