Would you really expect a 5th round rookie to look great in his first preseason? Who is his real competition?

I believe Landry is likely to see significant time as the #3 safety in a 3 safety rotation, but taking Pryor at 18 indicates he will be on the field for at least 80%+ of the snaps. Allen has shown significant improvement, and has unique man cover skills. Is it not outside the realm of possibility that the younger safeties can show some significant improvement and push Landry out, especially with his declining athleticism. I understand it is not the most likely scenario, but it would remove almost his entire contract from the books should we let him go. Granted it saves us $1.5 million, but it could be an unnecessary $1.5 million.

Cutting Colon saves $1.5 million (75% of his contract) as well, and he could be pushed out by Dozier should he surprise us in camp. Again, I know it is not the most likely scenario but if Dozier looks great and Campbell shows solid improvement to the point of being a decent backup, it could be an unnecessary $1.5 million to keep on the books.

I think Pace is by far the least likely of the 3 to leave, since we would save $1.5 million out of $2.5 million, and those who would theoretically push him are 6th and 7th round rookies. On top of that, Pace was quite valuable to us last season. The main factor here is that he will be 34 early in the season and we could be pleasantly surprised by Trevor Reilly, while being unpleasantly surprised by a drop off in Pace's athleticism in camp. Quite unlikely I know.

Guys chill, you're arguing about peanuts. I like all posts in this thread, very interesting discussion. I can tell you two things right now, Enunwa and Reilly are making the team for the simple fact that they will kill anybody that gets in their way of doing so.

There's a good chance Landry is cut before week one and re-signed so that his contract isn't guaranteed for the season ... That happens to vets every year, he's no lock

Good job @MaximusD163, but Josh Bush has been active too many games to be eligible for the practice squad

I also don't think Evans is a lock. I think he, our 6th round wr, and Nelson will battle for two spots ... I think the loser will come from the rookies and one will be placed on the ps

Wow I already can't wait until the preseason. It's going to be insane watching these guys play for their spots.

We get a very legitimate QB competition, the receiver competition, secondary competition, and even maybe a running back competition of CJ2K runs great in the preseason. I'm even getting pumped about watching the offensive line compete.

We have a good shot at pulling out a real diamond in the rough based on how many picks we just made.

I think too many people are bolded. This is going to be a real competition for about 50% of the roster slots.

QB - Geno Smith, Michael Vick
RB - Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell (have to have depth at RB or Powell would be fully in the competition)
WR - Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley ( too many receivers to peg anybody with certainty after this)
TE - Jace Amaro, Jeff Cumberland
OL - Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Breno Giacomini (money and cap space speak)
DL - Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison, Leger Douzable, Kenrick Ellis (NT's don't grow on trees)
LB - Quinton Coples, David Harris, DeMario Davis, Calvin Pace, Antwan Barnes
CB - Dee Milliner (there are so many CB's in the competition that figuring out who will make it past Dee is not possible)
S - Calvin Pryor, Dawan Landry, Antonio Allen
ST - Nick Folk, Ryan Quigley, Tanner Purdum

    That's how I'd see it.

All the rookies from this year are practice squad eligible and odds are good the PS will be half draftees from this year.

I agree for the most part but it would be a real upset if McDougle doesn't make the team.

I don't know about you guys but I love all the training camp competition. Firstly because it makes the team better, and also because it's a lot more fun to watch the preseason as the players battle it out as opposed to being a Broncos fan and watching Peyton throw 8 passes then take a seat.

Pace and Colon are locks...seriously. I don't think Pace should be a lock but that the way it's going.

I agree, I'm just saying the 29 guys above are close to mortal locks to make the team. The other 24 positions are up in the air.

There's no way there are 6 or 7 CB's on this team that are better than McDougle, there is just no chance in hell. Our 5th round pick not making the team would be an upset, but McDougle is a straight up lock.

looking at those lists the thing that scares me the most is the apparent lack of any sort of depth at tackle - really hope that Aboushi can show something this year.

also the length of the WR and CB lists are slightly ridiculous.

The WR and CB lists will only be longer when training camp rolls around lol.

I'm pulling for 3 specific players:

1- Stephen Hill - Went back and looked at his 2012 Jets highlights and GT highlights, the kid has some serious talent if he can put it all together. It's apparent he has lost confidence in NFL since college having watched the highlights. He needs to work on his foot placement after the catch, maybe he can break tackle and get more yac. He doesn't need to dive so much, could catch with his hands more enabling him to make a move.

2- Dex McDougle - First thing that stands out is that he is an outstanding kid, and you can tell how intelligent he is during his interviews. Scouts say he is a burner, I haven't noticed that watching his highlights, but he has excellent feet, good timing when the ball is in the air which means things are slowed for him. Could be a real gem and I applaud FO for seeing that.

3- Ras-I Dowling - Now this guy has playmaking ability, in part due to his height. He can go up and challenge, he is 200+ lbs making it harder for receivers to go through him on challenged balls. He has swagger which i think is very important as a cb, seems like things aren't as slowed down for him as McDougle, and i think he needs to work on his footwork taking smaller steps while shadowing receivers.

I just noticed that the 3 players I'm pulling for are in positions that could be the key to a successful season.

After proofreading this 1 other thing stands out to me, and that is it seems to me that McDougle is more confident, prepared, advanced, whathaveyou (it factor), than Milliner even at this point, and probably has a good chance to start this season.

Replace Dowling with Geno Smith and you have a pretty similar list to me.

QB - Geno Smith, Michael Vick (2)
RB - Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell (3)
WR - Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans (4)
TE - Jace Amaro, Jeff Cumberland (2)
OL - Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Breno Giacomini, Brian Winters, Dakota Dozier (5)
DL - Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison, Leger Douzable, Kenrick Ellis (5)
LB - Quinton Coples, David Harris, DeMario Davis, Calvin Pace, Antwan Barnes (5)
CB - Dee Milliner, Dexter McDougle, Kyle Wilson (3)

ST - Nick Folk, Ryan Quigley, Tanner Purdum (3)

QB - Boyd and Simms for 3rd QB
RB - Mike Goodson for roster spot
WR- don't see the 4th rounders getting cut, Hill, Nelson, Enunwa, Ford battle for last two spots
TE - depends if we take 3 or 4 Sudfeld, Pantale
OL - I expect colon, freeman, aboushi to make it 1 or 2 others could as well
DL - I'd expect 1 more to grab a spot maybe Finau
LB - 5 are locks. I'd expect George to take Bellores spot and one or both OLB rookies to take McIntyre's
CB - walls, Lankster, Patterson, Dixon, reeves fighting for 2 spots most likely
S - Rontez Miles could steal bush' or Jarrett's job
ST - we could use another punter but not sure about this rookie

Virtually every position has intriguing battles that are much better than last season...

QB: 1 spot for Simms vs Boyd
RB: 1 spot max for Goodson, Green, Griffin?
WR: 2-4 spots for Hill, Nelson, Evans, Enunwa, Ford, Gates, Jones, Salas, Haakim, Campbell
TE: 1 spot for Sudfeld or Pantale
OL: 2-3 spots for Aboushi, Freeman, Campbell, Ijalana, Schlauderaff
LB: 2-4 spots for McIntyre, Barnes, Cunningham, Davis, Enemkpali, Reilly, George, Bellore
CB: 2-3 spots for Walls, Dowling, Lankster, Dixon, Patrick, Reeves
S: 1-2 spots for Bush, Jarrett, Miles, Hardin

This has been what Idzik has preached since day one. Bring in talented players, have them compete with each other for spots. It provides more chances to find those diamonds in the rough that are out there.

Tannenbaum chose to use his draft picks to get the best talent he thought was out there then try to supplement it with UDFAs, which conceivably aren't much worse than late-round picks. Idzik chose to use all his picks, which is a different philosophy. Both can work if done correctly. Tannenbaum's way is high-risk, high-reward. Idzik's way lowers the risk significantly.
