Agree. Not my implication big blocker. I simply said this was not Rex driving the pick but rather Idzik sticking to the BPA plan ( which factors in need) he had for the first round. I'm happy as hell, still more worried about CB next than WR but that's just me.
I think the addition of Pryor may spark us to a #1 overall run defense this year. With Mo, Sheldon, and Snacks disrupting the running lanes, even if an RB gets past our line Pryor will be flying up to blow him up. He helps our pass defense as well, so I'm interested to see his ability to diagnose plays develop. Should he become good in that regard, he has the talent to be a league top safety. People keep talking about him being the QB of the defense... I'm hesitant to hail him as such until he shows it in-game, but if he does that's a solid step towards him becoming Polamalu-esque.
Welcome to the Jets, Pryor. I was thinking we'd go Dennard or Cooks while we were on the clock. I think Idzik bought himself some good faith with the Richardson pick last year, so I'm excited for Pryor and feel like he was BPA on our board. In this day with all these great quarterbacks, safeties are more valuable than ever and getting paid big time. I think Idzik channelled his inner Seahawk with this pick and went and got us a hard hitting safety who's going to go out there to force fumbles next year. If he turns into a young Laron Landry on a rookie contract who can start for the next 10 years it can turn into a great pick. We might of passed on bigger needs, and maybe even a few higher rated prospects, but it's just wait and see for now with Pryor and I'm excited for his rookie season on the Jets.. I think he comes in as an instant impact starter.
LOVING IT. I think that we got ourselves a winner from top to bottom. Those that label him " strictly in the box Safety" will be proven completely wrong. IMHO he will develop into the captain of the secondary with passion, speed and strenght. I can see him flying all over the field, a Troy Palamalu type with a much better hair style.
Pure BPA is a nonsense explanation for the Pryor pick. The Jets addressed a need. Ftr I had safety behind Cb and Wr as a need for months now. The other point you ignore is that safeties are part of the secondary along with Cb. As in safeties help with pass coverage. Right? Richardson was not pure BPA anyway. Rex was planning on moving Coples, and both DeVito and Pouha were leaving.
great great pick. A safety that can hit and hit hard is rare...a safety that can be a ballhawk is rare also. This guy is both. Usually a safety that hits hard is positioned in the box to help against the run and that's his limitations (see Eric Smith) but this guy is also a ball hawk playing back in position. Rare find...great find.
Cromartie was injured. Was it a career ending injury? No. Do you know that he will suck this year, too? Do you think Arizona is run by a bunch of idiots? The Jets will look smart if Cromartie does not bounce back, that I will acknowledge. But I also think they cut him hoping to replace him, which is why they came close with Rodgers-Cromartie, and were interested in others as well. The fact that they did not fill that void after cutting Cro fed into the choice of Pryor.
Buffalo just drafted Watkins and we still play in the same division with one of the best passing offenses in the league. Upgrading the secondary was not only a team need but vital considering the opponents we will face. add to that Pryor was likely their BPA and I don't see how this pick can be criticized.
Geno was never the consensus #1 pick. Did some people have him rated as their #1 pick at times? Yes. But not like Bridgewater. With Bridgewater, everyone had been saying (since his sophomore year) that whenever he came out, he was the automatic #1 pick. This was true through his entire playing career. Then they nuked him after the pro-day.
Exactly. I don't think a convincing argument can be made that the selection of Pryor, despite being an excellent choice, was predicated more on his being the "pure" BPA as opposed to the FO/CS filling a crucial need. I find it somewhat of a stretch to believe that Pryor is a better Safety than Cooks is a receiver.
I find it hilarious that you think it isn't a good reason. Yes, I consider it relevant that nobody thought he was even in the conversation of potential first round picks during the season. Geno sucks. He's not even going to come close to touching Vick in the pre-season. I don't blame them for drafting him, but admit your mistake and improve your position when you have an opportunity.
The sad part is, half of the people on here criticizing this pick have never seen Pryor play. This entire time leading to the draft I would have NEVER seen Pryor sitting there in our laps at 18. I thought Dennard would possibly, I thought Cooks would, and I definitely saw Lee bring there, but Pryor? The best rated safety in the draft? When Dallas was making their pick and I was looking at the remaining best players, it almost confused me that Pryor was still on the board. Do you people realize the talent we just drafted for our secondary? Do you people realize the fear a safety like Pryor causes to opposing offenses? Do you people realize that in the division we are in, we will be facing Sammy Watkins, Rob Gronkowski, Mike Wallace, Steve Johnson, Mike Williams, Danny Amendola, etc. These are all guys we will be facing two times a year each, yet you people are still complaining about getting a safety in the first round? Not to mention, Calvin Pryor? Let me put something in perspective here. Look at the remaining Safeties on the board right now. Now look at the remaining Wide Receivers. Just take a look at it and tell me that we didn't make a smart decision taking a safety. Was Cooks a great fit? Hell yes. Are there plenty of other receivers that could be great fits? Hell yes. We haven't had a safety like this for years. A majority of us wanted Jairus Byrd right? Well guess what fellas, we might have just drafted a 21 year old potential Jairus Byrd.
