Ahh - apologies - Read but misinterpreted. Thought you meant he deserved it but wasn't going to get it. Many others here are claiming he won't make it through camp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think the knock on Jeffrey was injuries..or maybe work ethic. Either way there was some weird reason why he fell to where he did. He was easily mid to late 1st round talent in my opinion. He never had a good QB at South Carolina and still killed it. That should've been a big selling point for us lol.
With all these ppl saying the Jets should cut Hill after the draft, he won't make the team etc ... It just goes to show why fans will be fans, particularly Jets fans ... Not a very football savvy bunch, but some of the most passionate around (for better or worse) I've defended Hill on the other WR prospect threads, basically downplaying the belief that the Jets must pick a WR in the first round bc this is the year where Hill should produce some dividends. As pointed out over and over again at neaseum by the astute around here .... Hill just turned 23 years old ... The same age a lot of these rooks will be. He was very young and very raw when he came out of GTs run option offense. He was drafted as a "project", everyone knew it, and as wisely pointed out, he was thrown into a role he was not ready (or expected to be ready) for. To boot, his distributors have been Mark Sanchez during the worst season of QB play I have seen, and Geno, who spent large stretches not being able to get any WR on the outside the ball in his rookie campaign. Plus he has battled nagging injuries including the week 4 concussion at Tennessee last year which in my opinion completely through him off his game. Give the kid this season. Not saying that I think he will be great, but give the kid a chance!! He wasn't supposed to be big producer for 2 years!! Even as a project some teams and analysts had a 1st round grade on Hill (this was reported during that draft) which is why Jets had to move up to get him. In other words give the Jets some slack too, other teams apparently thought highly of this kids POTENTIAL as well. Clearly he was not drafted for his production as pointed out previously. This is my favorite Hill stat ... Last year he had one of the BEST drop rates in the entire NFL (1.7%) counting all WRs who had 50+ targets. He dropped 1 pass. I've mentioned this before and ppl have said that he should have came down with some more contested passes. I'm sorry but what games were you watching? Geno was like a football version of Rick Vaughn last year and Sanchez the year before. Hill posted an abysmal 10.6 percent drop rate in 2012, but guess what ... Tavon Austin posted a 10.4 last year .. with more targets. And all you guys who want Marqise Lee ... Wasn't his drop rate last year over 15% (an astounding number at any level) last year. Yet all the wanna be analysts on this board don't come on here saying that Lee needs to learn how to catch with his hands ... we should draft him. Oh and I guess the Rams should consider cutting Tavon Austin if he can't learn to "catch with his hands". Look ...Hill may have another quiet year and be let go after. But I think he may also have a 1000 yard 8+ TD season and I wouldn't be shocked. Or somewhere in between! All I'm saying is give the 23 year old KID (AGAIN he will be younger than a lot of this year's rookies. Digest that!) A chance to prove himself. I can and def have been wrong on players in the past too but I have never ever quit on a 23 year old KID who came in as a project and had bums throwing him the ball. I'm rooting for him even more cause he's a good kid, he works hard, and I'd love to see all you know it alls wrong. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Hill will rarely see the field if the Jets draft another WR and all of the indications are that they will. They may keep him to sit on the bench or they may cut him so that he has a chance to catch on with another team and that will tell how good he is or is not. If they do cut him they save 350K or so and we all know how much Idzik will like that.
I believe they drafted Hill for various reasons. They saw the recent success of GA Tech receivers with similar measurables (Calvin Johnson and D Thomas) and thought they were getting the next good/great receiver. They ran a mostly run based offense at GA Tech and since the Jets were going back to a strictly run offense, they thought Hill would be a good fit.
I was done with hill when he lost us the patriots game in 2012.. Still and all I hope he learns how to catch.. And run routes .. And take hits.. And all the other stuff you have to be good at to be a wide receiver
Yea I remember the run blocking aspect to his game being the big reason he was drafted. Braylon wasnt gonna be back so I guess they wanted a similar guy to replace him.
Hill had the lowest drop rate in the NFL last year. 1.7%. Massive improvement. Hill is a physical mauler as a WR. In the last few years I've never seen a wr carry 4 or 5 dbs for extra yardage and there are 2-3 such highlights on Hills resume. To say he is a physical specimen is an understatement. If anything he needs to learn how to avoid those type of plays in non big spots. He was a project if anything he needed and still needs time to learn it's the CRAFT OF BEING a wr on the NFL. Route running, reading defenses, Hand fighting, swim moves, etc Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
This is spot on and exactly what I was trying to say. It's not possible to write off Hill given all of the information we have so anybody that tries to is extremely shortsighted and results oriented. And before anybody comments that it's all about results; obviously, but every year each NFL team has a handful of guys that surpass expectations and produce more than anybody predicted. Hill might have another quiet year, but given the totality of his circumstances he also has a very high chance of being one of those handful of guys this season.
A lot of the same excuses being made for Hill , were the same ones I heard when people defended Gholston. Raw skill , speed , overall talent , young , etc etc. What makes Hill any different from guys like AJ Jenkins, Jon Baldwin, Arelluious Benn? Those are guys that were drafted around the same spots in 2010 , 11 and 12. Around the same age. Does anyone have confidence in them that they will be good WR's? Fact is Hill was taken way before he should've been taken.
My interest in Hill does not deter me from going WR at 18 if they are the clear BPA. I think that Hill still has some promise so I'm am avidly against even the slightest reach for a WR. I think adding a guy like Beckham could be great for our WR corp, even if Hill steps up and becomes a significant contributor, but I think WR by committee with a 2nd or 3rd round WR could be helpful to us if that's what falls. Unless Clinton-Dix falls to 18 somehow, I'd be surprised if we don't go WR 1 CB 2 or CB 1 WR 2, and that is largely about the depth of those two positions.
Okay ... Big difference with Gholston. Huge. Gholston was supposed to produce right away. He never recorded a single sack in 3 full seasons and had like 10 tackles. Not a good comparison at all. And he was a 6th overall pick. As for the 3 wrs you tossed out .... Easy rebuttle: First of all they are all significantly older than Hill. Benn is 2.5 years older while Baldwin and Jenkins are each over 1.5 years older. If comparing say 29 to 27/26 I would say moot point ... But Hill is 23. Lots of incoming rookies will be older than Hill. Jenkins has 100 career receiving yards. 8 receptions. Was a 1st round pick. Hill is far beyond that. Baldwin was a mod first rounder and in 1 more full season only has 100 more yards and less TDs than Hill. Plus all 3 of these dudes came from pro style college offenses. There is more to it then just tools. The guy has stone hands, no football IQ, doesn't catch with his hands, and doesnt fight for the ball. Some things you either have it or you dont. Vernon Goulston had "all the tools" and look what happened to him. Some players maybe have physical aspects but they are just football dumb. It would be awesome if the light would come on but i wouldnt hold your breath.
Which for me ... Is a sample size worthy of some level of conclusion considering he only had 10 or so more targets his rookie year. And again, Tavon Austin only had 10 more targets and posted a 10.4 drop rate. To deny that Hill improved dramatically in the hands dept is just being stubborn. He did. And while only having 1 drop on 50+ targets. That is fantastic. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Yeah, but he didn't drop them.... In any case, how can you have a "drop rate of 1.7%"? I don't know where the stat comes from so I don't know what permutation of numbers generates it. He had 24 receptions so if he was targeted 25 times (caught 24, dropped 1) then it would still be higher. Stop me if I'm being a dumbass.
Hill does not have stone hands. Statistically Hill actually had some of the BEST hands in the entire NFL. I know the NE drop stings us all from 2 years ago, but much better players have dropped bigger passes in much bigger spots and have gotten over it. So should we. Gholston never registered 0.5 a sack in 3 years. Hill had shown multiple flashes of brilliance. It's not a good player comparison. If Hills career ended this second he would take with him an exponentially more productive career than Gholston. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
