I think he belongs, I hold out hope he eventually makes it but: he didn't win the AP DPOY award in 1981(not 1980) pro bowls are nice but all pros are what counts and he made 2 first team AP teams.
not all pro, pro bowl. very different. if it was AP I think he'd be in but he did make AP in 2 different positions. a few things I think are keeping him out: -overshadowed by Gastineau in that era even though he was better player. -never made a SB(but was on some very good teams) -tons of injuries robbed big part of his career
unfortunately you are right. i don't think sports writers should be the gatekeepers. makes no sense to me at all, having guys who never played, coached, or scouted decide who deserves to get in. they look at stats, and look to see who has super bowl wins, and debate from there. i doubt they ever look at much film. that is not how you decide on a guy who played a lot of interior DL. voting committee should consist of ex players and coaches, and have a certain amount of inducted hall representatives evaluating players. they should look at film, and speak with ex players/coaches who went up against the candidates. the senior committee voting is a little more closely aligned to this process, and i believe is why Klecko will finally get in soon.
Thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen it or even heard of it. There was a few seconds footage towards the end that killed me however...that was seeing Klecko in an effing Pats uniform. That should never have happened!!!!!
His son played for the Pats, Joe ended his career w/ Indy which was the only year he didn't play for us and his career actually ended in the meadowlands against the Jets where he got hurt and would never play again.
few nice shots of Joe from the official site: http://www.newyorkjets.com/photos/p...97984e2f#f0329358-b1c6-4bbb-85ca-e02698c15cc0

I think a lot of people(fans, players, coaches, media)all complained, or at least suggested Klecko be in there. Considering the history of this franchise, and the city they play in(big sports city), Klecko will get in eventually. The only "Jets" in there are from 1969 SB team and Martin. But Martin wasn`t just a Jet either. Is Riggins in there? He too, wasn`t just a Jet. Namath and Maynard were basically just Jets in their careers. I know Weeb is in as well. He too wasn`t just a Jet. I hope Klecko gets in. Definitely a fan favorite for sure. In my opinion only, I think Chrebet should get in there too. I know his #`s aren`t HOF but his heart for the game was huge. It`s just his history too that should be considered. Small school, no chance of being a star, small stature and all, but he proved to the NFL world that a small white guy can be huge in this league. Look what happened after him. Woodhead, Edeleman, the other little white guy(name escapes me right now). Pretty much opened the doors for those speedy little slot guys. Gotta cheer for the underdogs, ya know.
It was the 1968 team not 1969. Curtis is in b/c of his work as a Jet, Riggins is not. Wayne only belongs w/ a ticket. They let some unworthy guys in(like Strahan this year) but Wayne, as much as we love him, isn't even worthy of being discussed as a candidate.
I`m pretty sure we all know it was the 68 team(who won in 69). Wasn`t sure if Riggins in or not. Thats why I asked. I could`ve looked it up but screw it. It`s just discussion material. I know Chrebet would never be considered for the HOF. It was my opinion. And like most other players, a ticket would be needed. On a Jets forum, everything Jets is discussed, or as we have known for over 4 decades, DISGUST.
you can`t deny he helped open the doors for those little white guys who would otherwise never have a shot in the NFL. I actually think it was Waddle from Chicago who originally started that little white guy in the slot actually being productive. Since then, you can`t say teams aren`t looking for the next Edelman/Chrebet/Woodhead/?name still escapes me type. I would put Maynard in that category along with Alworth as the original "little white guys", along with Tim Dwight. Who was the other slot receiver NE had before Edelman? The name escapes me. He moved on to SD I think? One of Brady`s favorite receivers. Just seems like little white guys fit those roles the last few years. Thats all I`m saying.
Yes, I can. If you think Chrebet blazed new ground, I'd say you've been watching football for less than twenty years.
