No idea what his market is but I'm glad he didn't sign with the Jets right away. That tells me that the Jets aren't bidding against themselves.

If he goes somewhere else and signs a big money deal, say $5M a year or more, well that's the breaks.

If he's on the market for awhile that's just the market settling in for him.

If he signs a really cheap deal somewhere else, say less than $3M a year then you know the Jets weren't really interested at this point. In that case they just had him in to kick the tires and evaluate him against a bargain signing in June if he still hasn't found work by then.

RB's don't get much these days. CJ will probably get about as good a deal in the end as anybody at RB this free agent season. Donald Brown and Toby Gerhart both got $10.5M for 3 years. That's probably close to the best deal CJ will get. It's possible a bad team will make him a better offer but that's a bad team making him a better offer. There's nothing you can do about that.

Neither Atlanta nor Dallas can afford to commit much to him. Neither offense relies heavily on RB's, and he would not be guaranteed a starting role for either team. The Jets really make the most sense, as he offers most of the skills Ivory lacks in an offense that will heavily rely on the run. Johnson would be able to fill Goodson's role, and probably better, which is important because there is a more than likely possibility Goodson could be cut due to legal issues before the season. Ivory (primary back, with power and quickness) Johnson (secondary back with explosive speed and receiving ability) Powell (utility back, can do everything but with limited physical ability). As a corp for a run heavy attack, this looks good to me. Geno will be able to do some read option with CJ, and screen passes will be a lot more productive than in the past.

Anybody see the reports that Aldon Smith is on his way out in SF... He's completely out of his mind, but would be huge if we could get him. He honestly could get 30 sacks a year with the d line we have and coples rushing at the opposite side...

Taking other team's problem players has been a mixed blessing for the Jets in the past. Given that Smith is prime age that means prime contract and probably the same problems in NY that he had in SF. Problems tend to follow players around. That's why they move the way they do.

Where have you read that he may be on his way out?

And Idzik wouldn't sign him regardless. Is he very talented? Yes. Is he a major headcase? Yes, which is why even if he was to be released, he wouldn't sign him.

    This is interesting:

"The team source said “a contract was offered to Chris that was attractive and certainly at his value.” But the Jets knew all along that Johnson was a longshot to sign today, as the team source said he wanted to test his value on the market."

“The team knows what it is willing to spend on him,” the source said. “As has been done all season, we won’t overspend. We will stick to what is right for us to do that gives flexibility now and for the future. The Jets put together a convincing package on Tuesday to him, on and off the field. Now it is up to him. Everyone is on the same page on this, from ownership down to Rex and [general manager] John [Idzik]. This offseason has been about cohesion, not just in the locker room but in the front office. Everyone is really comfortable with what happened today.”

He actually showed quite an improvement last year even after changing positions AND being injured. I think he definitely has the potential to be a "sack master."

    Very encouraging.

A lot of posters on here forget that this is a career for these guys. This isn't just a game. Making a decision on a new contract takes time. I guarantee you Chris Johnson is talking to all his relatives and loved ones to gauge opinion on the details. I'm sure, just as any other job seeker in real life would do, he is looking at his options and seeing if he has a better option somewhere else. People are so quick to blame everything on money and not getting what he wants. It's more than that. Especially for a guy who would have to get up and move his entire family to another state, especially as big of a city as New York.

Lol there is no report saying that. There is a report wondering whether they will activate his 5th year option after the latest story. There is no reason not to activate his option, because the 5th year has no guaranteed money. They can and probably will activate it, and if they don't want him come 2015 they can easily cut him.

Personally I don't have a lot of investment in the opinion of a columnist from the San Jose Mercury News. Let's talk again in two weeks after Smith's hearing.

I live in San Jose, the reporter is a legit dude. That being said, I want no part of Smith. The guy is a cancer.

So why would he come here and split carries after bitching about splitting carries in Tennessee?

They were no longer willing to sign his paycheck. The Jets may be.
