For what it's worth, Reeves is a hard hitter and has nice closing speed. Thought it'd be interesting how Geno fared against him.
@Sloup: That's a really well timed jump. From the little I've been able to find out Reeves, it seems like the young man knows his limitations very well, and does a good job playing with those talents. Then again, I am just getting back from happy hour. Either way, looking forward to his contributions in camp.
I am not a big fan of AA or Landry. Both are SS and we need a FS who can cover. One of the reasons we got beat so much on the deep ball last year was the poor play of Allen and Landry. A cover safety like Clemons could have upgraded our pass defense and allowed Allen to move to a more natrual role as a SS. Yes we may improve in the draft but it takes rookies time to develop. Our two biggest weaknesses last year was our secondary and poor OL and sadly both units right now have gotten worse with little immediate help in sight. While CB is a premium expensive position safety is a cheaper position to upgrade where we could make impact and improve ourselves with out hurting our wallets much. Clemons seems like the ideal guy. But there might be a reason Clemons lasted so long on the FA market. He was essentially the last decent safety left. But a guy that seemed to fit what we do quite well.
There are two very good FS prospects available in the draft. There are about 3 more who look good also but not at the same level as Pryor and Clinton-Dix. There are probably a half dozen NFL caliber FS prospects beyond those guys with most of them bound for a reserve/special teams role but maybe a surprise starter and even star out of the bunch. It's a deep draft at FS and there are even a couple of CB's who might get moved that direction late in the draft. The key is either getting one of the good guys up top or figuring out who are scheme fits below that tier. FS is a position you should draft. It's a glue position and it pays to be the first team that is training the guy to play at an NFL level and in the scheme you want to run.
Yea, you're just overselling Clemons, though. Allen did a pretty nice job against Gronk. Let's see what the kid can do with another year of experience under his belt along with shadowing Ed reed.
I was hoping we would land him,but I guess Idziks plan of having the greatest draft in NFL history is still in effect
Lol this is the same dramatization and lack of foresight that lets shitty media writers and personalities pump out crap articles and tv shows. The media picked up on the numerous Jet followers tweeting their ignorant outrage that Idzik has been so quiet in FA, and ran with the "story." They thought, "Hey quick we can get fans even more worked up by acting as if Idzik is f***ing up even though there is lots of evidence to the contrarary that we can quietly ignore! That will get hits for sure!" Low and behold, here we are to this day on a Jets message board where there has been so much evidence provided that shows Idzik not only has been open and clear about his plan, but that he actually has a track record that shows he knows what he is doing and has successfully been a major part of this very style of team building. Yet there are still people making stupid claims like "Idzik's plan is to have the greatest draft in NFL history."
With the lack of talent at WR ,Te,CB,Saftey,Punt Returner, punter, and so on the point of free agency and cap space is to make the team better. In my opinion on paper as of right now we are worse then we were last season.Eric Deckers a great signing but he isn't enough.Out of the draft we would be lucky to get atleast two starters ,If we have a bad year this season Idzik would have boxed himself into a corner because he will get the full blame putting major pressure on him to right the ship or be fired in year 3.The modern NFL isn't the same as it was when you use to rebuild back in the old days.Every season we see this happen,in my opinion the draft just isnt enough to fix this team
Jerry Rice could be out there in his prime and we still wouldn't bring him in for a visit, because he isn't a "Idzik Guy" whatever that's suppose to be
Agree. Hope the Dyer article isn't true. Getting jackson and decker, still having 12 picks and tons of cap space would he be a huge offseason. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
I flat out disagree that we are worse than last year, and I've posted in detail why this is in the talent gained/lost under Idzik thread. You're really contradicting yourself here, because if we really lack as much talent as you say, with 12 picks in a deep draft we'd be bound to come out with 2 or more starters. What we really have is a lot of youth and potential, and we are about to have 12 more players worth of youth and potential. What do we see every season, the Jets being too quiet in FA? Unless you've been hiding under a rock you'd know the Jets have been among the most active in FA for a long time now, and that's what led to our bloated cap, and even though we had two good years, we just suffered through 3 shitty years as a direct result. What we really see every offseason is one team spend a lot in FA, and promptly suck balls thereafter. Need I go through the list of such teams yet again? How about I go through the list of recent SB winners, and then you can tell me how many of them are FA spenders, and how many of the impact players in the game were FAs as opposed to homegrown drafted guys. 2008: Giants. 2009: Steelers. 2010: Saints. 2011: Packers. 2012: Giants. 2013: Ravens. 2014: Seahawks. The only team on this list that isn't specifically known for primarily building through the draft is New Orleans, and they got lucky as hell because they got Drew Brees. Show me the next Drew Brees/Franchise QB we can sign and I'll be all for it. More foolishness. Think before you type. Rice is the ultimate Idzik guy, the hardest worker on the field, an image of consistency, a great leader, all about the team... There's no player who better represents an "Idzik guy." You sound like a whiny child, how old are you?
Maximus, thanks for hte detailed post, but the problem is that FA is a time in which you can improve. It is not meant to be the SOLE place, but it is an option. And for a team with a ton of cap space, it is a very viable option. You don't need to address EVERY position, but I also wouldnt leave myself lacking "starter quality" at positions where there were multiple viable options in FA. I wouldn't break the bank to fill every need and spend every penny of cap space, but I also wouldnt go into a season $30m under the cap and RELYING on the draft to work out. There is a middle ground. Idzik had a TON of room to work with and only used the smallest portion of it. With $40m in available room, he spent significant money on getting "upgrades" for TWO positions, leaving major holes in AT LEAST one position (arguably many more), but still has $30m left. What happens if they dont spend the money this season? From Idzik's perspective, it doesnt "save up" and allow us to spend more next year. Are you saying that because you are the belief that we should "build through the draft" we should never bring in a FA? I'm sure you would agree that is ridiculous and, if so, then why not spend at least a sizeable amount on the much needed positions. At the very least, there were several "prove-it" type one-year deals that the jets could have out-done in the one-year dollar value and then wouldnt have even risked anything for the future.
Ok, I'll explain as best I can. First of all, I believe we should bring in FA of course. In the "Offseason Direction" thread I made back before the start of FA or the Jets signed any extensions, I indicated the the guys I thought the Jets would re-sign and extend based on what I knew of Idzik's beliefs. I'll paste the post because it will save a lot of re-typing.
