Well if he played at the level he did last year he would be close to that worth ,I trust Jerry Reece over Idzik he has won two Superbowls Idzik has won nothing....but the respect of some Jets fans for saving cap space

Are you referring to the fact he got a signing bonus, so what? Everybody gets a signing bonus. His cap cost is 2.75M this year and besides we have 30M left right now, who are we going to spend that on again?

Did you just say Idzik has won no Super Bowls and used that as a basis for anything rational?

    Really?

no, you don't grasp that if he hasn't made an overwhelming offer it is because he doesn't value the player at that amount. he didn't stall on DRC, he didn't think he was worth it to go beyond what he did. same with Jackson, if he doesn't make a trade for him it is because the value isn't there in Idzik's judgement. hence Dom's position that you don't grasp valuation, which even when specified to you clearly goes over your head.

I'm not sure if I'm reading his contract properly, I'm a layman at this sorta thing, but it looks like the guaranteed portion of his contract concludes this year. I would take him for our 4th and roll the dice but that's about it. I get the feeling he's going to hold next season and after the whole thing with Revis I just don't want to be bothered. If we could get him locked into a contract with the deal where we aren't overpaying and there can be no holdouts then I say go for it but the reports about his character makes me doubt that will happen.

    Agreed

But the current talent on our team is not good enough. It's proven to be no better then 8-8. We have to resign our own for sure, but we have to add some talent from outside the organization (besides just the draft) if we want to improve on last year. Decker, Breno, and Vick are good starts. We could use a couple more guys, particularly ones who would come on short term/team friendly deals.

I think it's absurd to pin your fortunes on next off-season in terms of cap-space. If they take some of the cap space from this season to next, it can help with negotiations. You never know who will be available in FA next season as well. I think building a foundation via draft is more important to Idzik at this time. Retaining the great players in this locker room is crucial.

I think we have to reserve our judgments about how well this team does next season until after the draft.

    The off-season isn't over.

It's absurd to think they won't have money to pay their own players next year.

How much do people think Kerley will get? Just wondering.

Probably depends a lot on his production in 2014. Can't imagine him breaking the bank unless he has a huge breakout season.

^Kerley will get a contract, but he isn't going to break the bank. I'd guess between 3 and 4 million a year. He's a solid slot #3 WR. He should be paid like that. Wilkerson should get somewhat near top dollar for his position, say 8-10 mil. I'd rather pay Wilks this year, because next year he'll probably be worth more.

A 3rd rounder does seem a little pricey, but if Idzik is a good negotiator he'll get Philly to take our early 4th instead. Let's just take a quick gander at who we have drafted in the 3rd round in recent history

Brian Winters, Demario Davis, Kendrick Ellis, Shonn Greene, Eric Smith, Anthony Schlegel, Sione Pouha.

A few contributors, but nothing that jumps out at at you. Nobody that has come close to Desean Jackson talent. Again this is a deep draft and we have a LOT of picks. I don't see a problem with giving up a potential Eric Smith / Davis / Greene for a proven #1 WR in Jackson. If we had limited picks, I'd be concerned, but we have a crap load, including 3 in the 4th round.

Agreed, but you can't just add via the draft. You have to spend in FA as well. It's just about picking the right players and not spending just for the sake of spending.

Jerry Reese saw that Eli Manning is 33 years old and the Giants had a crappy year last year. He made a big mistake with the DRC signing in my opinion but at least he had a context in which to make the mistake. He had an expiring asset at QB and a limited time frame in which to try for the third ring.

He also is probably going to be out the door with a bad season next year. Like many GM's in that situation he saw spending the owner's money as the lesser of two evils.

This is wrong though. You don't have to spend big in free agency as well. In fact the teams that spend big in free agency usually regret their spending spree in fairly short order.

Look at the last dozen champions and tell me who spent a lot in free agency to get there. Then tell me who drafted well and filled with a free agent here and there. The answer is going to be the overwhelming majority of the teams drafted well and had a plan and a few teams spent in free agency and got there.

Most of the time when you spend a big wad in free agency the only thing you are doing is creating a talent shortfall 2 or 3 years down the road when all the prime time free agents drop out of the picture and you have few good young players because you never bothered to develop any with all the hired mercs around.
