I agree with you. I have been defending Idzik's slo-mo approach but you're right, this doesn't make much sense except as you've explained. The only other possibility I've been able to come up with is that the FO believes that Geno has the talent to be a Vick-style player, but needs to be mentored and pushed. Otherwise why bother with Vick except in the panic, win now sort of scenario you've described. In any event, I agree with your analysis and I was a supporter of Idzik's approach.
You're telling me. It's hard to believe (undrafted free agent from U. Northern Iowa) but like most of the family we are from Iowa and we may not be the most talented, best looking or smartest in the room but we will out work anyone. He worked his ass off and earned every penny.
Adam Schefter Jets have a history of making moves for a quarterback on March 21. Two years ago today, the Jets acquired Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos. Hopefully this one works out a little better
So we spend 5 mil on a backup..... Or Idziks hand picked QB of the future fails and Vick is our starter. Five mil for Vick but Revis, the best player we have ever had at a position of need and value, wasn't even considered. Fuck Vick he's a piece of human filth and a garbage QB......although hell likely beat out Geno's pathetic ass.
To be fair Philly was not opposed to keeping him around at a cap friendly number. I am speaking more to once you see what he can do on the field and know he is on your roster. It is hard to sit a guy with that much potential. That was the big fear in Philly as Foles started to play well that Chip would go back to Vick if Foles showed any signs of struggle. That is why the eagles fan base is glad he is gone. It is the temptation factor.
because his 2nd rd pick 3rd pick in his first draft doesn't workout he should be fired? what if vick takes us to a s.b. (disclaimer, i in no way am predicting vick takes us to the super bowl) and geno never starts for us again? fire idzic. what if next year we draft a qb who beats smith out and takes us to the s.b.? fire idzic?
Please tell me how Mike Vick is going to teach Geno anything when he himself at age 34 still can't read a defense? All the homers see Vick now as some savy cerebral vet. Lmfao
once again: this is the standard going rate for veteran backups that are viewed as potential stop gaps. Henne, Cassel, and McCown got the same, we got him for standard price.
Philly loved his leadership on and off the field. Everyone will point back to the dog thing and I admit I disliked him but the way he's portrayed himself since he was released from jail is awesome. He knows our offensive system and can help Geno become a leader on and off the field. He'll help Geno improve his game anyway he can. It may not be reading defenses but it could be when to take off and scramble, it could be how to handle a diva receiver, it could be anything it's not all about X's and O's when it comes to mentoring.
I wouldn't call Geno "hand picked" - his value fell into our lap in the 2nd round as the BPA. Regardless of whether Geno becomes a franchise Qb or not, Idzik didn't put his reputation/career into Geno's success. Anyone with an intricate knowledge of the Jets (and a good scouting team) would have taken Geno at that pick.
I think it is more than that. Plus $4.8 in dead cap money if I recall. It is a good move knowing the QB class available in this years draft.
