Sometimes life and circumstances forces one to change one's philosophy or approach. I think perhaps one of the best things that could happen to Rex and the Jets would be for them to not be able to sign another CB or draft one. That would force Rex to alter his defense from being so CB reliant. He would then be forced to view the OLB and S positions as more important, and I think the D would be more balanced, and have a chance to become a truly dominant D. As it is, I don't think it will ever achieve that. I think Rex's warped view of the D is off kilter and it will never be as good as it could be.
Rex's warped view is still very much feared by offensive coordinators around the league. Could he benefit from having to re-examine some of his cornerstone (no pun intended) principles? Sure, everybody benefits from periodically re-examining their longheld assumptions even if they choose to keep them.
I think Rex proved last year that he won't alter his defense, even where his job hangs in the balance. The jets got awful CB play most of the year and he was still pretty aggressive, even though the jets CBs kept being beaten over the top (poor safety play also played a role here). I think Rex is a great coach and I expect that if we stick with him with a good GM, that he'll win us a superbowl within the next 5 years or so. That being said and given the strength of the front 7 I think the jets would be better off mixing in a zone defense more regularly when outside their 20 yard line, but I don't think Rex is likely to do that.
I agree that Rex isn't likely to change. I just don't think it's in his DNA. I don't see the Jets ever winning anything as long as he is our HC. That family just isn't that smart. They're all very limited in their own ways.
We haven't won anything with anybody as our head coach for 47 years, why should it be any different with Rex? We've been rebuilding since 1968 just like we are now.
This makes much more sense than spending money on FAs who the team doesn't think would be a great fit. I don't think any of the FAs that we haven't signed would greatly impact the ability to build a team that can compete for a championship for years into the future. Maybe Byrd, but $9mm seems a bit steep for someone who isn't Ed Reed in his prime. But if we can get our core guys signed to long term deals now, paying them heavily in this season, a) that shows a commitment to our young players who produce and b) should keep money free down the road to make big FA signings when we have a better shot at a deep playoff run.
True, but there's more reason for hope now. The Jets have more young talent than they've had in a good while. Idzik is basically going about things in the right way. He perhaps needs to be not quite so tightfisted in FA and Rex needs to adapt/change. If neither can, then hopefully, Woody will wake up and at least get rid of Rex within a year while we still have the young talent in place. Then hopefully Idzik could hire a HC who could do something with the young talent we have.
Um this isn't Rex's fault... We don't have the talent... We have one of the better head coaches in the league.. Lets slow down.
Um, I totally disagree on all accounts. Other DCs have built defenses as good as the Jets and haven't used nearly the number of #1 picks as Rex. Name one other team in the NFL where there D scheme is so heavily based on the CB position and they basically ignore the OLB and S positions, and use older, slower jags at those positions. If Rex had zero input into the drafts while Tanny was here, then you may have a point that Rex isn't to blame for that, but based on his own words over the years he's been here, it's pretty clear that he just doesn't value those two positions and values CBs above every other position, and probably including QB. Rex is not one of the better HCs in the league. That's absurd imo. He's a very good, albeit limited DC. Period. I think he's a dumbass excuse for a HC. The sooner he's fired, the happier I'll be.
So if you are Cheat, who do you attach to Decker? Had better be Browner. If Revis covers Decker all game long, and they waltz with each other all game long, that's the game Jets win, by margin of 5M/yr on each and every match up. Then what? Like I have been harping for years now, there is so many ways to neutralize a CB and make him a non-factor - just don't even give him a look, and don't invest much in WRs. If you ignore LBs like that, you pay steep prices [sacks, fumbles, etc etc.] Revis is godly good and all that - we all know. So what? If your front seven cannot do their job [1] and your OTHER secondary cannot do their job[2], then Revis factor can be ignored - i.e. his prowess is invisible. You can throw #1 WR at him and forget that both existed during the game. Provided the value is spread out in even fashion, Jets SHOULD be able to create imbalance elsewhere and exploit it. Remember how other teams beat the Jets when Revis was on board. They all looked elsewhere, and had no problem with it. I don't know if I would be happy to see him gone - but I agree with your point to a degree. His neglect toward LB corps and Safeties in general is almost criminal. I know he loves staunch DL plays, backed up by strong cornerback plays - but that's so 80's, a.k.a. 46. We don't live in the 80's any more. Revis made Ryan's scheme more effective - that fact cannot be ignored. Ryan really, REALLY loves loading up the box, and Revis gave him that luxury. As a whole, I do not like 46, as it is too risky a defense to use as a base defense. If you think I am making this shit up, look at how the Bears D performed in 1985. When Marino spread them out, they were in for a long day. [And the lone loss.] Their LBs could hit like truck, but were dumb as collective doorknobs in pass coverage. It just happened so that, the offensive philosophy of the day was countered by 46 at that time [That hackneyed mantra of Establish the run and set up the pass bullshit.] so it was effective. There defense remained good enough, but did the same Bears ever got to SB again? No. They got knocked out in the 1st round twice, and 2nd round twice. And when they lost, they received a big can of whoop-ass. The closest was 4 pt loss against the Skins. When 49ers and Giants whooped them, it was not pretty. So, in that regard, I would like to see Rex growing out of his 46 mindset. If he cannot do that - his stay in New York won't be long.
Well, the Jets dropped the ball on this one. How the hell do we let DRC sign for 7.8 with the Giants? We couldn't offer him 8 with all the cap space we have? Really? If I'm Rex I'm considering resigning, as the Jets are destined to go 8-8 again next year with the same exact issues as this season because holes are not being addressed, then Rex will be fired when it won't even be his fault. Idzik is being too conservative. We have money to spend. DB was a weakness last year. Good pass rush is useless without cover corners. We pretty much have to bring AC back now and just hope he's not still injured. We have a really deep offensive draft coming up, yet we're probably going to draft defense the first 2 of 3 rounds. Epic fail. No reason to go into full rebuild mode on an 8-8 team that was a dropped pass away from the playoffs.
Maybe it's wishful thinking, but maybe the FO thinks walls, milliner, Wilson + draft picks will actually be really good?? Each one of the corners has had experience in the NFL, and all three have potential to be really good.
Amazing job by idzick. What a putz. I'll sat it again 40 million in cap space does no good if u don't use any of it. Maybe now he will get his wish and sign champ bailey to vet minimum contract. This is a joke
I'm very high on Walls and think he'll be a starting caliber CB very shortly. He has good technique. Just needs more experience. With that said, I'm not too fond of throwing him into the fire by striking out on all FA CBs. CBs got a great deal of learning curve in this league and in this system. Drafting a CB is doing the same shit we did with Miliner last year, while not filling our biggest needs.
Unreal how we have made no attempt to sign a decent CB. Idzik must have low-balled DRC for him to sign with the Giants. We have to bring back Cro at this point, and most likely go CB in Round 1.
I don't like the fact that we've gotten worse at the CB position BUT I don't think the situation is anywhere near as dire as many are depicting. We as a fan base have gotten used to having a very strong dependable CB group due to all the years of Cromartie & Revis. I know last year showed something different w/ alot of struggles..but I believe part of that was due to Cro's hip & Milliner's learning curve. A few things to consider before we panic. 1. Walls & Wilson have both started games in the past. It appears we maybe transitioning to a #1 & #2 type look rather than two #1 CBs which obviously is alot more costly. As it stands this is a TC competition between 2 young players that have ample game time experience. 2. In 2009 the Jets CBs were Revis/Sheppard/ Donald Strickland/Coleman. I know this group lacks Revis but Milliner/Walls/Wilson/Lankster/Dowling is a much deeper group. 3. It's time for the Jets DL to consistently dominate. That's what this boils down to. If they can disrupt QB's timing & move them off their spots we can flourish w/ this corner group. They can all play man, none are slow & all can tackle.W/ added pressure upfront this group could pleasantly surprise. Where we'll get in trouble is if the DL is struggling & guys like Wilson are asked to do alot of change of direction. I wanted DRC b/c I thought him being paired w/ Milliner would be a very powerful duo. But I also had my reservations. Those comments about retiring scared me...& the Giants sign him to a 5 year deal?? He also isn't a very good tackler..which maybe why the jets were lukewarm.
I'm pretty surprised that the Giants actually signed him to that deal, but like you said, we shouldn't despair about the situation. Last year, I don't think Rex anticipated Cro's massive decline, or that Milliner would be missing assignments in the first few weeks (including Week 2, giving up a TD that allowed the Patriots to win.) The plans are already in place by the time the regular season rolls around, and it's too late to change the playbook; but this year he will at least have time to figure out alternate strategies, as opposed to presuming that Milliner and Walls or whoever are going to be a top-end CB tandem and basing the defensive schemes around that. Our D-line is much better than it's been in a long time, and that's a strength. If Rex is the defensive mastermind he's cracked up to be, he should be able to find a way to leverage that into a good defense without needing 2 top-10 cornerbacks. I still think the corners won't be as bad as they were last year, with an injured/bad Cro and an inexperienced Milliner. Walls' play was mostly solid, I think we can do okay. Ras-I Dowling was cut from the Patriots after being an early round pick; he's got to have some potential, seems like he was discarded because of injury concerns. Wilson is good at covering slot receivers. And then between Lankster, Walls, Dowling, and whoever we bring in to compete, hopefully we will get at least average/mediocre production at the other corner spot. Like you said, DRC's comments about retiring were pretty alarming. (Even though it was hypothetical, you don't talk about that when you're 28 and want another contract. It also suggests that he doesn't have passion for the game.) And he'd previously admitted not giving his full effort in his years at Philly. I'm not so certain that he's going to be that good; and if he's not, then I think Idzik has to get a pass for not getting him. If he turns out to be good, then I'll feel bad about him slipping away.
