Sports is kind of a special case, I know, but sometimes I wonder how some of these posters deal with the decisions that they must make just to get through their day.
It never benefits a team to spend cap space unwisely, even if that means they have to trust in a rookie to take the job or a late bargain FA signing. Let's say you just got your allowance and you're standing in the candy store holding that $5 bill. You really want Butterfingers for your money but all the shop has available right now is salt water taffy and you just got back from having a filling at the dentist and he told you to stay away from salt water taffy. That $5 is really burning a hole in your pocket though. You really want some candy NOW! So do you buy the salt water taffy that is going to cause you some extra visits to the dentist down the road and that you really don't want anyway OR do you put your $5 back in your pocket and go home, knowing that at some point in the near future the Butterfingers will arrive? It's an easy call. Unless you just want candy NOW! and can't think straight about the choices you are really making.
In addition to that if we don't get a CB in free agency this year we might just have to get one next year with possibly a crappier CB pool to choose from and maybe have to spend the same money or more that we could have locked a guy up for this year. Or we draft one and have the least experienced CBs in the league. I bet that will work out well for us. Unless people are suggesting we tank this year I really don't see the harm in locking up a CB for a few years instead of burning another high draft pick on one or having a starting CB tandem of Milliner and Walls.
No one was willing to give him anything long term because of his suspension. I wonder how good he can play on the outside. Maybe this was a selling point to reel in DRC.
With apologies to Bill Parcells, 8-8 this year would be an improvement over the 8-8 we got last year. There was a little luck involved in that 8-8.
Why is it defacto spending unwisely? Is every penny ever spent in free agency unwise to you? Is the only wise way to add players to your roster through the draft? How do you expect us to draft all starters at our several areas of need when we only got maybe 3 decent starters from last year? It doesn't add up,
This is true. Even points scored and points allowed leading to 8-8 would be a big improvement over -97 point differential last year leading to 8-8.
Yeah, I can see him going to the other NY team. My only question with him would be what Br4dw4y5ux alluded to above. We don't know how mature of a guy Ebron is and how badly he wants to be great. Tight ends are tricky in round 1 anyway. It is much safer to take them in the middle rounds. That all said, from what I have seen, I would take him at 18. I will not shed a tear, however, if he is off the board. The Louisville and Alabama safeties would be fine picks at 18, if there. Northern Illinois and Wyoming also have safeties the Jets could grab on day 2. I think Jimmie Ward has 2nd round value. The Wyoming one is a 3rd or 4th round type in my opinion. The Jets could also look at that Wash State dude if they want a heavy hitting box safety.
I thought we would go 9-7 10-6 but I also thought more players would be brought in thru Free Agency so I'm not sure what I really think anymore
I work in a job where I deal with people making ridiculous decisions on extremely important parts of their lives. Nothing much surprises me anymore.
Obviously every pick is a gamble but we can only hope that our scouting department did their homework and would feel confident that whoever we pick he is dedicated to being great. I watched some YouTube video on Cooks last night and I really love the kids maturity.
Free agency is a heady mix of overpaid players, a large amount of unwanted scrubs and a handful of bargains. If we have a poor draft then put the boot into Idzik, FA doesn't determine anything.
We've signed two free agents already this year. That's two starters we chose to add via that route. That's appropriate. Going all hog wild and throwing cash at average to above average players until we have the minimum number of holes is not appropriate. That's a strategy that leads you in circles at best. You lose free agents one of two ways: either they got old and you let them go or they demanded too much money and you let them go. Nobody willingly loses a free agent who was actually asking to be compensated at their appropriate contribution level. Every now and then a team that was too frisky in free agency, signing other people's average players at a premium, loses one of their own stars as a cap casualty. The corollary to all of the above is that by definition almost anybody who hits free agency is asking for too much money. That's why they hit free agency. The rational way to deal with veteran free agency is to figure out which teams made a mistake in not paying their guys an appropriate salary. If you can sign those guys to an appropriate contract then that's a reasonable thing to do. Then when things have settled in free agency look around and see who is left. Those guys were asking too much. Maybe their price has come down to the level where it makes sense to sign them. DRC at $9M a year doesn't make sense. He's not that good. DRC at $7M a year might make sense, although that's still a lot to pay for a guy who has not been a consistent player so far. DRC at $5M a year is dinner bell ringing come get it. That's where the Jets might be in a month if he can't find anything else.
Agreed, it's unfortunate that in a year with lots of good, young CB free agents and having piles of cap space we have decided to pinch our pennies which is going to result in an inferior product on the field now and in the future and will also likely cost us a high draft pick.
thing is even if we land DRC he really isn't a #1 CB... Between him and Milliner it will be interesting to see who takes on the #1 responsibilities.
I think we agree that Tanny made a SB run in 9-10. He stacked the team to put us in a very good position to do that. It almost worked, but did leave us in a bad position for a couple years after. I don't think anyone would have complained if it had worked. We lost DP that could have built depth in many positions, but we also missed on a few picks we did make. If our QB pick had worked, if our 2 CB picks had worked, if Vlad and Vern had worked we could have picked safties, O-linemen in later drafts. That's all in the past. Going forward, I think Idzik can bring in FA's and maintain a solid draft strategy for the future, while still fielding a competitive team. As far as re-signing, our players will use that argument either way. Player X just signed with team Y for this amount, that's what I feel I'm worth... pay me. That's the way FA works, rarely does a team get a hometown discount unless a championship ring is looming. Bringing in FA's, even for a short term allows you to stick with your draft strategy of BPA. I'm not a sky is falling type of guy, I know there will be many players available between now and opening day for us to look at, but the market will set the price. If other teams are willing to pay more, than we either have to pay more or go without.
