There once was a man named Mike Tannenbaum who made the shots in the front office. A man who spent money like no other countless times in free agency. Now, we find this team with a completely different GM who seems to believe the best way to build this franchise is through the draft and to spend money wisely and efficiently in free agency.

Let's see what the current vote is in regards to Idzik's approach to free agency.

Im really glad we arent doing whta the Browns are doing and just throwing money at everyone. Idzik was brought in to build through the draft and he should continue to do so.

I like his approach. We're a team trying to build right now. He's mostly targeting low risk high reward young guys and solid vets on cheap contracts. The draft is our bread and butter. If we're in a position to legitimately compete for a SB then he'll probably spend on a big name or two.

It makes sense for Denver, NYG, Atlanta, and Miami to try and spend money. They have championship expectations. We are just trying to build the team into a serious contender. Once we're there then his approach might change. I've been wanting a GM to conduct business like this for years and we finally have it. It's quite refreshing IMO.

I've been sold on Idzik since he kept Rex. I'll trust him through this process and see what happens...It is frustrating watching everyone else get Christmas presents and not getting anything ourselves though. :(

I don't think I would count Miami as a team with championship hopes. They did go 8-8 last year.

In fact how do any of those teams have championship hopes?

Kind of hard to judge how he has done when he hasn't done anything (of consequence) yet.......so far, everything totally expected......

I didn't ask to vote on how he did in free agency. I'm asking a vote on his low key approach which is pretty obvious at this point.

The approach matters far far less than the results.

So far this off season there have only been cuts, a few players leaving on FA, and Cumberland, Folk, Walls and some other JAG's staying put.

    So I voted incomplete.

Because they do? The Giants thought they were a good team last and was good enough to compete. ATL thought they were good last year and had an off year due to injuries and guys regressing. Denver was in the Super Bowl last year, and Miami thought they were good enough to compete for the division/playoffs.

With Mr T we would spend a bunch of money on a bunch of over the hill bum's. As far as I can remember we always took a bath
in the FA. I am kind shocked a WR or TE a least has not been picked up. But I voted incomplete cause this is just the beginning
of the race. I really love the idea no one I MEAN NO ONE knows what we may or may not be doing. I like that a lot

Too early to tell. I don't like that he didn't address a few areas of need (CB, FS mostly) and now we have another hole at OT but there is still lots of time left.

Not sure yet, but we don't know who he's looking at.
I agree, you build through the draft for the future, but that shouldn't stop us from bringing in good players in FA this year or next, even if we have to pay top dollar to sign them.
I guess we wait for FA to play out, then grade.

If we build through the draft how long will it take to get where we wanna be? Can Rex wait that long?

He shold have signed Howard, news reports indicate that we were close to what Raiders gave him. Now there is another hole to fill. Could have focused on other needs in first 3 rounds of draft but now must throw tackle into the mix. Howard was a know entity, young, not a crazy price, everything Idzik says he likes...

This. In theory, not overspending on FAs is a great philosophy. However, if you get shut out from signing anybody impactful because of that approach, then it was not a good approach. That being said, if you do get shut out, it's probably more a function of underestimating the true market value of the free agents.

Yep. FA is a marketplace. The player can and usually does go to the team that offers the best deal for the player. If you want to get that player, you will have to pay at least as much as the top offer made by every other team.

The concept of a bargain in FA is basically an oxymoron. Yes, if you have a need that for some reason no other team has, competition for the player filling that need will be minimized. But that is not a bargain so much as being in the right place at the right time.

But if you are looking to fill a need that other teams also have, you will either pay the market rate or not get the player you want.

Of course it may be that more than one player can fill that need, and there is also the draft as an option, or even a trade. But those alternatives have their own drawbacks. And so does not filling your need.
