As we approach free agency and the draft, let's look back Open debate, which 5 guys have "sucked" the most money out of the jets AT THE TIME with the least amount of production? In no particular order, these 5 come to my mind quickest: Vernon Gholston Dwayne Robertson Blair Thomas Santonio Holmes Mark Sanchez Honorable mention: Lam Jones
I don't really like this list. It doesn't really capture the worst contract decisions. It's not like there was much negotiation with Robertson, Sanchez or Gholston. They simply got what high picks got. Those are bad draft picks but not bad contracts which should apply more to free agency or extensions of current players.
Pretty much this. Theses guys were slotted based on where they were drafted. Same thing for Lam Jones and who even remembers his contract? _
This list/post makes no sense. The title reads worst contracts but you have 2 guys who never made it to a contract aside from before their rookie seasons. Gholston and Robertson are draft busts. As for Santonio and Sanchez.. They definitely hurt this team the past couple years and both would probably be top 5 honestly.
He can't be a top 5 bust I agree but what did he do after he signed his CONTRACT? Nothing which is why he should be listed under the top 5 worst Jet contracts.
With several teams doling out between $20+M and $30M per year to just one player, I really don't think any of our contracts were all that bad. Even Sanchez was in the $10-12M range. Watching the Ravens crumble under the weight of Flacco's $20M/yr and NE under Brady's $30M signing bonus is kind of fun. And GB (Rogers $22M) and the Broncos (Manning $20M) are right behind them. That's why I hope Rex/Idzik can build a winner without a $25-$30M/yr super-duper-franchise QB so we can still have a hell of a good, fun to watch team around him.
Not just "one of the worst" ... that extension, for that amount of money, at that particular point in time ... is the single worst front office move in the history of the team. Even morons who learned everything they know about the NFL by playing Madden knew immediately, at the time, that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to give Sanchez a long term, big money extension right then and there. Prior to that, the guy who stole the most money (who wasn't just a bad draft pick that got his slotted money) was Justin McCareins. Not only did Bradway trade picks for him (a guy with zero career 100 yard games), we promptly signed him to a big money extension and then watched him drop passes and get no separation for several years. David Barrett was another one.
I think we need to differentiate the worst picks from the worst contracts. A bad high pick is bad precisely because of the higher investment that gets wasted (getting to pick that early in the draft and paying the player a lot of money) but bad contracts are voluntary stupidity. In this way the Samchez contract is really tops. Not only was it not deserved, it wasn't even necessary to keep him. It isn't like the Neil Odonnel contract where we overpaid but someone was going to give him a nice payday and we were desperate. Sanchez was already under contract for crying out loud! So my worst contract is definitely Sanchez Santonio Holmes is second for me. He quit on us and, IMHO, has been a drag on the team without ever producing anywhere near the price we paid. Odonnell (sp?) is probably third. Graham (the WR we signed along with NO) is probably fourth as both were a waste here. Not sure about the last one.... There are a lot of mediocre signings like Lott, Monk, Reed, etc. But non of these much impacted the Jets long term. They were merely short term disappointments. I may be forgetting someone, but there really aren't that many ridiculous contracts in the Jets history and the ones we have are from two periods. The desperation of the Kotite era and MrT's GM shenanigans. Other than that our woes are mainly poor drafts and poor development. That's my $.02.
Yup, I don't see how anyone can argue this. The sheer stupidity of it baffles me to this day. Would love to know what the FO was thinking. I had forgotten about McCareins and Barrett. They definitely deserve consideration as crap signings. Might need to rethink my list...
I agree with every thing you said till you mentioned Reed. I still like him and hope he's back as a role player this year. I wonder why no one has mentioned W. Hunter. That was a bad contract.
Ironically footballs weren't the only thing McCareins couldn't catch. I was at a kids birthday party a few years back and the kids were playing dodgeball with a few adults sprinkled in - JM was one of the adults on the other team. I threw a ball as hard as I could at him and you guessed it - he dropped it. 100% true story...
As others have already pointed out, you're incorrectly listing bad draft picks rather than bad contracts. May as well add Roger Vick to that list then. The Sanchez extension was a bad contract, and you could also say the Holmes deal was too, in retrospect. At the time, Holmes seemed like a missing piece that we needed. Only contract extensions or FA signings should be considered here.
not only is he top 5, but he is probably behind only gholston and robertson. he was a bottom 5 QB for 4 straight years and the worst startin PLAYER (not just QB but player) in football his last season starting here. We made the playoffs in spite of him and the second we didnt have an elite o-line, running game, and defense around him we sucked.
