A big part of the reason Smith gets a pass is because a rookie. Rookies aren't expected to come in and dominate early, despite Luck and Wilson playing great. Sanchez was a veteran whose contract was worth more than what he was producing on the field. Neither one of them had good receivers, so that's a wash. Statistically, Sanchez had a much better offensive line while Geno had a better running game and Offensive Coordinator. Geno wasn't ready to be an NFL starter this year, and for much for much of the season, he played like it. But the season ended on a high note, and left me at least moderately encouraged for the future.
mark did not have a better OL, the weapons were comparable(though better in 2013), the RBs were much better in 2013, the OL better in 2013 and obviously the OC was much better.
It's so hard to evaluate OL stats but we had more sacks w/ less pass tempts and the YPC was worse in 2012. I have no idea how we had a better OL in 2012.
Agreed its the hardest thing to do. Judging an offensive line seems impossible to do without using the eye test. But I'm trying to be impartial, and that's one thing that stats are.
The offensive line was worse in 2011 than it was in 2013, if thats what the debate is. I dont care about stats, I watched both lines for 16 game and I can conclude without even thinking twice that the 2011 Oline was worse.
Everything you just said is wrong. When Sanchez was QB we had a better running back tandem in Thomas Jones and the rookie Shonn Greene (he was good then) Ivory and Powell had some awesome moments this year but come on. Receivers.. Not even close Braylon,Cotchery, Keller > Salas, Nelson, practice squad.. O-line is closer than you guys think the young and better D-Brick/Mangold and the vets Brandon Moore, Faneca, and Woody.. This years o-line? Winters, Colon, brick and mangold on the decline.. As for the OC yes Marty is way better but look what he had to work with. In addition to all that we had the best defense and one the best special teams in the league.
The 2012 offensive staff/talent was worse. The RBs were worse, the OC was worse, the line was about the same, the playcalling was horrid, the tight end was absolutely worse. Holmes played 4 games, Keller played 8, it was worse. I dont really like to judge either QB in either offense though, both were the worst in the NFL hands down. 0 playmakers, even the Jags had more talent.
When I evaluate Mark Sanchez I dont include 2012 and no one really should, same applies for Geno, I will never hold 2013 against him, no QB is succeeding in either offense unless they are named Tom Brady or Peyton Manning and even thats debatable. Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Eli all would have collapsed in this offense to, just look Eli, he loses his Oline and he collapses. Sanchez lost his Oline, RBs, and recievers all at the same time AND was paired with Sparano and folks expected him to do good in 2012? GET REAL.
This, I just laugh at people that put much stock into 2012. He was working with the least amount of playmakers/talent I have probably seen in the last ten years. Sanchez did not regress, the talent around him is what we regressed. If he had the quality players in 2010 he would have continued to play at that level if not better. We never replaced Edwards production, we never replaced L.T.'s 3rd down back production. The run game was not as good either. Tannenbaum either knew he was limited with the moves he could make or he honestly misread the talent which was not that hard to see considering we were all screaming about before the season began.
had we stayed healthy he would have had enough talent w/ Holmes, Keller, Kerley but when you lose your top 2 guys and Chaz Schilens is starting that's not a good sign. Schilens was rumored to be cut all preseason and he ended up starting b/c of injuries.
Yeah, but the problem is that Sanchez collapsed at the end of the season under the strain of dealing with a sub-optimal situation. He literally went into a fetal curl to the point that Greg McElroy was able to replace him during a game and win that game when Sanchez kept tossing it away. Now Geno had his own fetal curl moments last year in 2013 and that's one of the reasons I think the Jets have to have a backup plan this year. However he did that as a rookie in a sub-optimal situation. That's at least understandable. Sanchez collapsing at the end of his 4th season is not. By then you're either able to keep it together or you're not and Sanchez clearly is not able to keep it together at the NFL level at this stage. His upside right now is David Carr.
Not for anything but wasnt Sanchez working with the worst group of offensive talent/staff in the league? That offensive unit might be the worst offensive unit in the last decade....
As far as Geno's psyche is concerned, Sanchez is already on the team and someone Geno should expect to compete against every training camp, especially when he is young and non-established. I can see how the Jets bringing in an established QB like Vick or drafting a new QB in the first round could mess with Geno's head. But as far as Sanchez, Geno should already have expectations of battling it out once again, and may the best QB win. Just business as usual. No head games, etc.
That's where I'm at at this point...but I'd still like to see Simms get a shot. Unless the Jets find some qb talent under a rock, we're pretty much stuck with what we got. Add in a playmaker or two and we can win more games than not.
Mark Sanchez's play did regress. The talent around did regress also. Most of the time it's a combination of factors. Mark Sanchez was making mistakes at the end of 2011 and in 2012 he avoided for 2010 and part of 2011. He was making worse throws too. His footwork got worse, he started rushing his throws. He started to force plays and forgetting game situations. It's really convenient to just say "let's throw out Sanchez's worst season" and go from there. The thing that this misses, is that 2012 did impact Sanchez's play, he regressed. He has to come back from that. It impacted Sanchez. You want to say it's primarily the lack of talent in 2012, yeah that makes sense. But whether it was Sanchez, the talent, or both, Mark Sanchez played worse and it can't be ignored either which people want to do.
