Would not be upset at all. I wanted to go into TC with 3 QBs. Vet, Geno, Rookie. Rookie sits back and watches. I have expressed much interest in this. The QB position: Vet - Vick / Sanchez / Shaun Hill "Starter" - Geno Smith Rookie - Fales / Jimmy Garoppolo / Mettenberger This is a pretty good QB depth chart.
That's a good question. I haven't seen the whole list of FA QBs. I'm sure there is someone out there of his calibre, he's not exactly a surgeon in the pocket.
I was just thinking how Idzik came from Seattle, who signed Matt Flynn, but had no problem going with Wilson who outshined him at camp. So I was wondering if fans would be upset if they signed a veteran and drafted a QB, who both pass Geno on the depth chart. Or would they be fine with it.
Yes, most definitely. If they gave up on Geno after one season (which is what they'd be doing if they placed a drafted rookie ahead of him on the depth chart and relegated him to 3rd string), I'd want all of their heads on a platter. It would be clear that Idzik didn't know what he was doing and final proof positive that Rex wasn't fit to be a HC. You don't give up on a rookie QB after one season, especially one in which he had no real weapons to work with, and those he did were seldom at the same practice or seldom played in the same game.
I voted to start Geno but I really really hope Idzik signs a decent veteran FA Qb just in case he goes into another below 10 QBR funk that certainly can't be tolerated. Someone like a Matt Hasselbeck (under contract in Indy). He would be second string to Geno but with Simms as no. 3. Goodbye to Mark. As for Garrard he did say during the season after he was activated that he thought he could still play. I really felt he should have played in 2013 if it was true because when healthy he is what the Jets can use. But you need a Qb who can play and start. If you do bring him into training camp and he legitimately makes the team and is healthy I have no problem giving him that job. He's when healthy as good as any possible backup. But you can't rely on him (due to health plus not playing in 3 years). It's just conjecture on my part but they have to spend money on a good veteran Qb to either start or back up Geno.
I guess the thing to watch is if the Jets enter the NFL draft without a QB signed. They might have a free agent on mind but if they sign a free agent QB after the draft then I think it might show that they intended on drafting one if it came up.
You are not a newbie, but you can be a real asshole. I never said Kyle Orton is anywhere near my favorite Qb, although I am sure you enjoyed typing out your little post there. I recommend learning about the game of football if you want to sound intelligent here. Give it a couple of years and come back.
If we upgrade the weapons around him, yes. Right now, Geno is still a guy with potentially a high ceiling that is a very young player. That to me is hope. Give me hope over some retread vet who has proven over the years to be mediocre. That said, we should have a viable backup plan just in case Geno regresses or gets injured.
BN, I was to be clear referring to posters here who are fine, apparently, with not bringing in any competition for Smith. The key word in your post is obviously "could". Well yeah, but he could suck even worse, too. I don't think he faced much in the way of tough pass D's in those games, for example. I don't want to see the Jets in effect depend on Smith next season and have no plan B, and as much as I think they should have given Simms more of a chance LAST year, ftr he is nore like a Plan D or G.
Is competition good though? Other than the Seahawks outlier last season, how many teams that waste valuable QB reps on competition in the training camp are better for it? Don't you usually feel that the teams that have "open QB competitions" in training camp are usually among the worst in the league? Training camp reps are important.
I don't know why any fan would be upset if the Jets upgraded the QB position. Maybe fans of a specific QB would be upset in that scenario, but Jets fans just want the Jets to win, which a better QB would help with.
Eh it was a small shot, no need to rage over it. I don't see how me being an "asshole" has anything to do with your profound love for Kyle Orton ... or my knowledge for football for that matter. I have never seen someone talk up Kyle Orton as much as you. I can also say I am pretty confident in my football knowledge.
The correlation between open Qb competitions and bad teams is because bad teams often are not set at Qb, not the other way around. And if you are not set at Qb, then you might want to see who your best Qb is instead of just appointing someone who was one of the two or so worst qb's in the league. In other words your correlation does not establish causation. Ftr I also am not a fan of putting all your eggs in one basket, and looking around the league you see many starters at Qb go down. Has the backup gotten enough work to step in and succeed? My position quite simply is that if the Jets sign a quality vet, or use a high pick in the draft, for a Qb, and Smith can't outperform that person in camp, then HE should be the backup. The Jets owe him nothing more than a chance to show he should be the starter.
My previous posts about Orton were made here SOLELY in two respects. One was to douse the Tebots who talked Tebow up. That was bs from them, how the Great Tebow came in from the awful Orton and turned Denver around. I focused on Orton coming out of that, since it was evident to me that it was other factors in Denver that were more significant, that Tebots themselves were a factor in the transition, and obviously Elway took the first chance he could get to get rid of Tebow. So there was that, but it was that that really got me started here about Orton. Then the second thing was Sanchez Fans such as yourself, who on average clearly don't know much about football or they wouldn't be Sanchez Fans, complained when i said Orton is better than Sanchez. Orton is better than Sanchez. So are about forty other Qb's in the league, at least. I plead guilty to getting into it with the Tebots. I think that is how I ended up talking so much about Orton. And yes more recently I also think Orton would be a good fit right now as a vet Qb who is probably better than Smith as well. I have also talked about others including Cutler, Bradford, Hill etc.. None of the foregoing means I love Orton, so you bringing him up as some assertion that I don't know what I am talking about was assholish on your part.
I didn't spend much time talking about Tim Tebow (or talking to the Tebow fans period), because I couldn't stand him being here. It was a Woody Johnson move and I didn't like it. I have to admit 2012, I was not a huge fan of football that year. That still doesn't change the fact that Orton with the Broncos was underwhelming and he was complete garbage, stat-padding in garbage time in 2011. btw let me get this straight, if someone disagrees with you - you consider them a Sanchez supporter or Tebot? Intriguing considering I did not support Mark as a starting QB after 2011. Nor did I support Tebow coming here. Orton is not better then Sanchez, I must say. They are in reality both garbage QBs, where-as Mark at one point had upside. That is the difference. Orton is a loser QB, and has never had success at the NFL level. I think you need to re-evaluate your thinking process because calling someone a Sanchez fan when they disagree with you is bullshit, immature and a cop-out.
IMO, the best thing for the Jets to do is to stick with Geno for this upcoming season while building a real offense around him + a full year of offseason work. If you look at FA, you arent going to find a viable long term options, and most likely no one that will be immediately better either. In the draft, our bet option is to look at mid round QBs (Garrappolo and McCarron come to mind) because Teddy, Carr, Bortles and Manziel should be gone by our 1st round pick. You use FA and the draft to rebuild the offense and get some real talent in place. You try and put Geno in a position to succeed, and if he can not, you move on and at least you have a very good foundation built for the next QB. With some weapons on offense, Geno may surprise some people and improve a decent amount. His statistics between when Kerley (our only real NFL caliber WR) was on the field and was not are VERY different. Geno was actually a capable rookie while he was on the field. If you add more pieces around him, he may have a chance to surprise some people. With Kerley- 10 Games, 12 TDs, 12 INTs, 4 Rush TDs, 227 YPG, 60.3% Without Kerley- 5 Games, 0 TDs, 8 INTs, 1 Rush TD, 118 YPG, 40.4% Obviously there is more to the big picture than just the stats (home vs away, level of defense played, ect), but it is still noteworthy and interesting at the very least.
