No not at all. It was because Don Shula started a rumor that Marino was doing coke. The city of Pittsburgh back then had a massive coke problem so the narrative made sense. Was he actually doing coke? Who knows? Didn't matter, he was the best college QB I had ever seen play live and he became IMHO the greatest throwers of the football in NFL history. _
Because they thought they could coach him up and get over the mental/maturity issues. They tried to trade up to 1 for Peyton but Indy refused because (i) they knew Peyton was the better player and (ii) they knew Leaf had issues. Those two guys from a physical standpoint were clearly the number 1 and 2 players in the draft that year. Teams think they can fix problems when they are unfixable. _
I thought the rumor on Marino was marijuana not coke. Probably Leaf would have been a disaster anywhere he went but if you keep saying that Mark suffered because of all of the variables (coaches, the team he played for, teammates, etc) than you can say it for anyone. If you're good talent rises to the top. I think Marino would have been great anywhere. But with the Fins and Shula a great spot to land for him. Would Mark have been better somewhere else. I doubt it. I can't think of anyplace where he'd have gotten 61 starts and played so horribly.
Sanchez was the best player in those games, although you can make a great argument that Revis was but nevertheless, Sanchez was either #1 or #2.
Bradford is better then Sanchez, question is, are the Rams tired of him like you said. He's clearly not a great QB and not what they thought he was going to be when they drafted him. If the Rams got rid of him I wouldn't mind picking up Bradford to compete with Geno.
The Rams are an interesting team, Fisher is entering year 3 now, for him its time tom start showing results (although drafting a QB would buy time, he seems to be in the exact situation Shanahan was entering year 3)
Was it ever proven that Shula started that rumor? I vaguely remember watching the 30 for 30 and them saying that apart of the problem along with drugs was also attitude. Honestly who cares if he was the best player in those games.
I'd love to have Bradford. But my thing is this. Is Johnny Football an upgrade over Bradford? I don't think so. When healthy Bradford has been good. They need to add depth to their oline and maybe add a receiver.
LMAO thats all you have to say? So whats the goal as a franchise? I guess to you its about putting up great stats rather win Super Bowls?
Nope. Cocaine. Comparing Sanchez and Leaf is just plain silly. Mark had some talent, had a head on his shoulders, was by most accounts a hard worker and his teammates liked him. Leaf was SUPREMELY talented but he was mentally an idiot, by the time he showed up in camp his teammates universally hated him and he never worked hard often being late to meetings or just not paying attention. Bobby Beathard said Junior Seau confronted him the first day of training camp and screamed "what the fuck did you do to this team?!?" I get you hate Sanchez but there is no need to compare he and Leaf or their situations. It's silly. _
The goal is to win a championship. But you also have to be realistic. We are not winning a championship with Mark Sanchez as our starting QB. That's why he'll be cut soon.
LOL no one can ever prove the rumors. His "attitude" was that he was a hothead and supremely confident in his abilities. Kind of the stuff that would make a great QB. No, you don't pass on that type of talent because he's a hot head or overly confident. You pass on him because you think he's a cocaine addict. _
Again you're comparing two completely different types of players. And if you don't think he's an upgrade over Bradford you've not seen each of them play. _
Thats a bold statement considering we were on the verge of going to the Super Bowl twice with Mark Sanchez, and Sanchez WAS NOT the reason we lost either championship game.
Sanchez played really poorly in the 1st half against the Steelers. This including about 4 PI's against the Steelers in that half. It wasn't his fault that the Jets were down big at half time but it was as much on him as anybody else.
My point was that teams take chances with guys with character issues. And best believe Marino was probably the only high profile player in that draft with drug rumors. I bet there were others that were using that skated by. Manziel is not the once in a generation prospect that Elway and Luck were. So I'm not gonna assume that an unproven QB is better than a proven NFL QB.
How was Sanchez not a contributing factor in the losses? My next point is this, you say we were on the verge. But did we go to the SB? My point exactly.
I don't hate Sanchez but I think he's had his chances and it's time for him to go. 61 starts and mediocrity and at the bottom of the learning curve is enough. He does deserve a chance at a fresh start with another team. Nobody gets 61 starts with this kind of production. Even a guy like Bradford is wearing the patience of his team and he was an overall no. 1 not so long ago. As for comparing him to Leaf I said Mark was 10x better than him on and off the field. I was using it as an analogy for all the people constantly making excuses for Mark. You can make an excuse for anyone. Why they were horrible. The reason Mark was horrible is because of himself.
