did we not have plenty of talent in 2008? did we not have the benefit of a weaker sched? did we not have the benefit of no Tom Brady to deal w/? did we not have a future HOF QB?

and we were a good franchise when we had mark starting and he would have started this year had he not gotten hurt and probably been here long term.

I'm on the Sanchez supporter side of the GG posters' imaginary line in the sand but I have to say he was bad as everyone thinks. There may have been extenuating circumstances but the end results were still unquestionably bad.

Haha except now there's a very good chance that the 2014 Jets will be better than whatever team Sanchez starts for.

Such is the life of a mediocre Qb in the NFL.

He led his team to a Super Bowl which trumps 2 title game appearances. And yes their situations were similar. Average at best QB that's surrounded by a good run game and stellar defense. That sounds like us in 09 and 10 and just like us it wasn't sustainable and they fell off like we did in 11 and 12.

    ....

Ftr while not a Sanchez Fan, I don't rule out that a change of scenery might be good for him (the key word there being might).

The fact remains he has worn out his welcome here, deservedly so, his contract is prohibitive, and he doesn't fit with the need to upgrade Qb performance on the Jets. The other teams that have been mentioned, and I certainly include Oakland there, as well as Minnesota, have significant differences with the Jets. Those teams have such poor performers at Qb on their roster that they might take a chance, with that change of scenery, that MS would be an upgrade.

But those teams are not even competitive let alone potential playoff teams. With a top fifteen Qb the Jets could be contenders. MS will never be that. So let him go somewhere else, and use the cap space on someone else (some other elses).

In the 3 playoff games in 2006:

    Grossman: 52-92, 56%, 591 yds, 4 TDs, 4 INTs
    Chi rushing: 94-430, 4.6 YPC, 5 TDs
    D/STs forced 8 TOs
2 games at home, 1 neutral

in our playoff runs we averaged 4.2 YPC(.4 less than Chi '06), RBs scored 6 TDs(1 more than Chi in twice as many games), mark passed for over 60% completions, 9 TDs, 3 INTs, D/STs forced 8 TOs(same amount as Chi in twice as many games).

our 6 games were on the road, they didn't play a road game, we followed up 2009 w/ another title game run in 2010, they never made it back w/ rex.

    The situations are nothing alike.

And, over time, what we saw was that Grossman was nothing more than a mediocre Qb.

    Same goes for Sanchez.

That is a fair point, however fans point to 2012 and say SANCHEZ SUCKED! THAT IS WHEN I QUIT ON HIM! all the time. The Jets are not built around the QB. Every single season since Rex took over has been a team effort. Fans seem to blame 2012 on Sanchez, which couldn't be further from the truth, so I have to point out the team overall was terrible.

You should be our GM as you are so much smarter than the ones we've had. Why couldn't they figure out that what we need is a QB like Brady or Peyton? Idzik, if you are out there, listen to this guy. It's very simple; go pick up a QB like Brady or Peyton...duh.

Top defense and top run game in 06.

Top defense and top run game in 09 and 10.

The situations in fact are similar.

we had a top D and top run game in '09 in rankings only. How many blown leads did the Bears D have? were they lighting it up running the ball in garbage time too?

In 2010 our run game was decent, the D wasn't nearly as good and yet we got better. I wonder why that was?

Such a joke most of you are. There is so much hate for Sanchez that you'd be willing to say just about anything....

Both of those teams you named - Oakland and Minnesota - while starting 6 different QBs, ended up with better passing stats then the Jets did.

So how can you possibly say that it's smart for them to try and grab Mark but for us it would be a dumb move?

Why would I do that? I'm a Jets fan, not a Sanchez fan.

Sanchez didn't throw away a handful of games for the Raiders and Vikings the way he did for the Jets.

Purely on skills, and ignoring the fact that he's a shaky QB in the pocket these days, Sanchez might be a better option than just about anybody the Jets are likely to pick up in the off-season.

The problem is that he's also got a lot of history of folding in the clutch recently and absent very good performance from him in 2014 he'd cause the fan base (and the team) more aggravation than a free agent with the same performance would.

In that situation holding on to Sanchez because he's near the top of a thoroughly mediocre list of potential veteran QB's seems like a fool's errand. Barring the relatively small chance that he suddenly becomes a steady QB after four years of instability and a year on IR the Jets are just setting everybody up for misery in 2014.

Now throw in the fact that Sanchez is going to be much more expensive than any of the other options out there and it becomes a simple choice.

Even if he renegotiated to a more manageable number you still have the problem that the first time he throws a bad pick the crowd is going to be restless. You earn your credibility with the fans and right now Sanchez doesn't have that. He likely doesn't have the chops to earn it at this point either.
