Profootball talk has posted this article on Mr.T saying for the first time that trading for Tebow was a huge mistake, like we didn't know that already.I wonder if Mr T will ever get a chance to be a GM again
it is not why we went 6-10 in 2012, we just didn't have the depth and talent on O around the QB to succeed. He did a very good job for us for many years, it's s shame he got fired but Idzik is doing ok since taking over.
It was a big reason why we went 6-10. So trading picks for Tebow didn't have any impact on our depth? Really?
I don't understand why this is making news right now? Didn't he say this like literally a week after he was fired?
What was there in the draft that would have helped in the 2012 season? Other than Ladarius Green in the 4th, it's hard to see anything that would have made a difference and even Green is a stretch. Overall paying Tebow the money probably had more effect that the picks, especially with how poorly we were drafting.
One of the dysfunctions that has held the Jets back over the last decade is the "ooh shiney" thing that has happened repeatedly in free agency and trades. The NFL is not like other major sports. Other than the occasional absolute superstar individual players really don't have that much impact on a team. Very bad players can have a huge impact because they get attacked repeatedly and become a bleeding wound in the game plan but good players just don't have all that much impact unless they are a QB and they are very good. 53 men is by far the largest roster in professional sports. The closest to that is baseball with their 25 man roster. 22-26 men who must take the field on a regular basis each game is also a very big number. So looking at an individual player who is not an absolute superstar is unlikely to make a huge difference unless you are replacing a very bad player in the process. The reason that free agency has worked for the Jets at all is that they have replaced some really bad players using the process. Alan Faneca replacing Adrien Clarke was actually worth real value in the win department. Clarke was a gaping wound on the left side of the Jets offense.
Hindsight? Really? A player could come to this organization and things could have played differently. If ANYONE contributed with those picks it would have been a win over Tebow.
That has little to do with why he is not the GM anymore. The huge extensions he gave to Sanchez and Holmes on the other hand have everything to do with it.
We all could have told the reporter this. Only a "Tebot" thinks that Timmy should be playing in the league for a competing team. Reality, what ever team Tim plays for may win some games (with defense) but never be able to reach Lombardi with Timmy at the helm. Great college qb talent, not NFL great qb talent.
It's just reality. The Tebow thing wasn't even close to what sunk the 2012 Jets. It was years of poor drafting on offense, along with the addiction to "shiny things" as Bradway put it. Look at how poorly we drafted for a few years on offense: 2008- Drafted Vernon Gholston at 6. Could have drafted Flacco, who is just average but is much better than Sanchez. 2009- Traded up for Mark Sanchez. This cost the Jets picks, and a boatload of cap space for the next few years. Had the Jets drafted Flacco the year before, or solved their QB situation another way they could have drafted a number of decent players here (Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin) to go with Flacco. How much better would the 09 and 10 Jets be with Flacco and Harvin/Maclin? 2010- The Jets draft Kyle Wilson in the first round because they need help in the secondary after the 2009 playoffs where Peyton Manning tore apart their CBs. Of course this is overkill because the Jets signed Cromartie. The Jets could have drafted a number of offensive players that could have assisted their 2010 run (Gronkowski, McCluster, Gerhart, Ben Tate) or a defensive stud like Sean Lee. The Jets followed this up with Ducasse in the second round, who is a horrible bust. The Jets could have had guys like Eric Decker, NaVorro Bowman, Jimmy Graham, etc here. Hindsight? Sure, but it's clear that we drafted poorly, wasting picks on players who didn't perform and in some cases trading up for them. Look at our skill position drafting (2006-2012) by round: 1st Mark Sanchez QB Dustin Keller TE 2nd Stephen Hill WR Kellen Clemens QB 3rd Shonn Greene RB 4th Bilal Powell RB Joe McKnight RB Brad Smith QB Leon Washington WR 5th Jeremy Kerley WR John Conner FB Erik Ainge QB 6th Terrance Ganaway WR Marcus Henry WR 7th Jordan White WR Greg McElroy QB Scotty McKnight WR Chansi Stuckey WR Overall it's a pretty bad group (except the 4th rounders) when you look at value vs where they were drafted, and it's still hurting us today. Was Tebow a fuck up? Sure. But drafting poorly and trading away picks over a number of years was the bigger problem that caught up to us in 2012. I can't fault Tanny too much (09 and 10 were nice, and he did draft well at other positions) but Tebow was only a small part of why the Jets imploded in 2012, if any part at all.
