Pettine has been around Rex for a long time. He's probably a very good hire as a DC and maybe a HC also.
When the Bills hired him I figured there was a chance he'd be a very good DC - and his defense was better than Rex's this year which was surprising. It seems like it's always a crap shoot when promoting guys to HC but I don't see why he couldn't be one. Usually coordinators spend more than a year at that level before such a big promotion though.
Pettine had DC responsibilities with the Jets, he just had the boss collaborating with him to a greater extent than usual. He's one of those guys who is probably going to get a shot as a HC somewhere and the team that hires him is 50/50 to be very happy with the hiring. Just my opinion.
No but you should be,I Pettine is a top d coordinator in my eyes atleast. The Bills defense looked a lot better under him
Schotty is from the Schottenheimer tree. The reason he hasn't gotten a chance so far is that you don't get the promotion from coordinator to head coach until you show some real skills in the job you already have. Schotty has never done that anywhere. Until he puts a top 10 offense on the board consistently he's not going to get hired as an NFL head coach. The only way he gets that job otherwise is if the family influence somehow plays in his favor somewhere. He might have a shot at the job in St. Louis if the Rams move on from Fisher but not if the offense is the reason Fisher failed. So basically Schotty's shot at being a head coach comes down to him getting lucky and finding a great QB. He hasn't shown the capability to develop one of those guys yet. Drew Brees is the closest he has come and it's pretty clear that Payton gets the lion's share of the credit for him turning into one of the all-time greats.
Schott is getting an interview for the Vanderbilt HC job I heard. He could be ok at the college level.
Why would I be mad? The guy deserves and aspires to be a head coach in this league, and given his success, he certainly should get the opportunity. He came in and turned one of the worst defenses into a top 10 defense in his first year. I hope he gets a shot at a head coaching gig somewhere soon. Certainly deserving.
Hmmm, I wonder how he'll handle people leaking things to the press that make him and his team look bad?
Wow. Pretty big news. Good for Pettine. He was the Defensive Coordinator of some pretty amazing Jets Defenses in 2009 and 2010. Browns D is already good. Best part: Bills lose a good coach.
