It is a difficult call. If the Jets bring him back, I can see the Jets being like the Bengals. Marvin Lewis was brought back for being mediocre (or maybe more because the Bengals are cheap) and the Bengals haven't won a playoff game since. I believe the Jets will improve next year no matter who coaches the team, but they will only improve to being a 6 seed at best. Then, they stay at that level in 2015 and then they take a step back in 2016 and then Ryan is still hanging his hat on divisional playoff wins from six and seven years in the past. Fast forward a couple more years and Ryan has coached the team for a decade and he's still only got the four playoff wins from the first two years. However, he is not incompetent like several of the head coaches from the past. Ryan is not the second coming of Chuck Noll or Tom Landry or Paul Brown. Before he got hired, I wrote on this forum that he would be just like his father. He'd top out at 10-6 or 11-5, be ridiculously defense-crazed and a little too bombastic for his own good. You could tell from the radio and TV interviews when he was with the Ravens. That said, he's also not Les Steckel or Hugh Campbell or Richard Williamson or Rod Rust. There are three options. A) fire him B) give him a 1-year extension so that he is not a lame duck coach in 2014 C) give him a long-term extension Option C after three straight non-winning seasons, no matter the excuses, is absurd. I'm on the fence with this coach. I see great arguments for A and B.
I notice you can't answer my question. Your just like the rest you want to fire Rex but don't have a clue who to replace him with. Talk to me when you can answer me. I'll wait.
For final say, I'm not ready to make that jump even if it is logical. I'm really enjoying your insights so if you don't mind answering something, do you think Idzik has been in full control once we hired him, or is Rex still being part time GM? I understand all coaches should have input in the personnel decisions, but I feel like Idzik is very in control of everything and Rex isn't part time GMing for us like you and many others believe he did under Tanny. Hope you don't mind me quizzing you
All 32 head coaches have some sort of input. How much is dependent upon the type of GM who is in place and the relationship between the GM and head coach. I do not see any evidence that Idzik is as close to Ryan as Tannenbaum was. I believe Ryan had less input on the 2013 acquisitions than he had during the Tannenbaum years. Some of it is probably simple maturation. When Ryan first came here he thought he could coach anyone. He's probably learned a lesson. He can't coach everyone. Some players are just jerks (Holmes, Burress are two examples) who can hurt a team just by their presence. Ryan knew he was on the hot seat after Tannenbaum got fired and it had to be an easy decision (for job security reasons) to not step on the new GM's toes. The old GM did some major salary cap damage, too, so it wasn't as if the Jets could go out and make any big splash in free agency. So, in the end, I believe Ryan deferred to Idzik quite a bit. That said, Ryan is the head coach and he still must have had major input as to what players the Jets drafted. I am not sure about the free agents, however, this time around. I betcha Ryan pushed for Antwan Barnes because he coached him in the past. I doubt Ryan had much to say about Goodson or some of the others. As for the draft, again, it is too early to grade it. I don't even want to go crazy about Richardson yet and I loved it when the Jets selected him. There have been quite a few rookies who looked like budding stars only to never be better than they were as rookies. I hated the Milliner pick the moment it was made and I still don't like him. However, it is too early. There are some signs of competency. Some cornerbacks simply do not fare well as rookies. We need to see Geno Smith with a good pass receiving corps before we write him off. Also, the offense he played in at college was a problem. It made for a rough transition to the NFL. He played in a freaky spread offense. He needs a full NFL offseason to fully get that West Virginia offense out of his mind. There were some things that were a little too easy for him in college.
Exactly.. No one can answer that. There no stand out replacement.. Everyone that want rex fired cant even point to someone who could come in and do a better job. Atrocious qb play, depleted roster and the jets have a chance to go 8/8 is insane. Smith alone is responsible for over 30 turnovers. What coach could have won with that stat? No one
Pretty much anyone will be an upgrade over Rex from an offensive standpoint. Rex isnt some hot name out there that teams will be gushing to pick up. No one wants a loud mouth hothead with the baggage that Rex brings and the track record of utterly inept offenses. You think teams know for sure who they want when they fire someone at the end of a bad year/stretch of years? I think Woody and Idzik know Rex has peaked already and may have a few guys in mind but they wont know for sure until they start the searching and interview process.
dear mike francesser, what the fuck does who replaces him have to do with his job performance? so you just keep a coach even though you know he wont lead you to the promised land if you dont have a guy to replace him with BEFORE you fire him. seriously with this stupid shit.
LOL. You do know how to go to previous pages of a thread, right? I have listed a number of HC candidates PLENTY of times. You Rex nuthuggers seem to just ignore that constantly. Anytime anyone says there's a better option out there, you just say "Oh, name one. If you cant youre wrong, idiot". Then theyll name one, and you just ingore it. Here's some names for you, Sally. Bill O'Brien Darrell Bevell Greg Roman Jay Gruden David Shaw *waiting for obvious response of "those options suck" or "they'll never come here"*
Bill O'Brien does not have the resume behind him that says "I'm the guy!". What has he done that makes people think he would be a better HC than Rex? I don't get it. Bevell and Roman are not producing power house offenses or anything, those teams are built very solid as is. Bevell to his credit did strike gold with the Wilson project, so that is impressive, but to think either of their resumes are better than Rex Ryan's is not accurate. Jay Gruden? They guy has had a talented roster and this is the first year the guy has got into the top 10 in total offense, as they currently are ranked 10th in the league. 11' 20th, 12' 22nd, 13' 10. The rest of the time he rode his brothers coat tails. How is he better than Rex? David Shaw, what do you like so much about this guy? I didn't want him here when he interviewed for the OC position with the Jets last off-season, I sure as hell don't want him as the Jets HC. How would he be a better option? I guess I truly just don't see your perspective within your list. Maybe you could share why you think those guys would be an improvement over what we already have with Rex? I truly don't understand. Bevell is the only guy on your list that remotely interests me. I still don't think he would be an upgrade though.
Rex Ryan's resume prior to taking the Jets job was not any better than the resume of any of the five guys mentioned above.
You're saying what's gonna happen in five years, you don't even know what's gonna happen next week. Go fuck yourself. WARNING ISSUED
But Rex's resume since taking the Jet job is way way way better than that of any of those five "New Kotites" Which is why it's good that Rex isn't leaving
He did not win a Super Bowl as a coordinator or a head coach. You have not convinced me. Also, telling me to go f myself because you don't agree with my point of view is pure class on your part.
