Tannenbaum never should have been fired, mangini was fired b/c he didn't win a playoff game in 3 years.

I love the "Mangini" players nonsense, how did Cleveland do w/ Mangini players? Regardless who picked the players he won. The team was getting older and more expensive and now has to go through a rebuilding phase. That was going to happen no matter who the coach but at least we had 2 chances at the SB w/ rex.

Good post. This is just another example of why Rex's time is up. The team isn't improving, it's stagnant and regressing even on Defense in some respects.

Rex is the HC and if the offense isn't producing and forcing the D to be on the field longer, then he has to take the blame for that too. He's in charge of all aspects of this team.

i put that on the secondary, upgrade the secondary and there will be more int's and more opportunities for strip sacks.

Here is how I personally would 'rank' a defense (without getting too mathy)

[(Opponent Possessions Starting Positive Territory resulting in TD) + (Opponent Possession Starting in Negative Territory resulting in any score)] / Opponents Total Possessions

    Rank the percentages.

I'd love to do a really detailed formula that takes into account % opposing team possessions, score of the game, opposing team's avg points/yards per game etc, but not only do I not have the time to get the needed info to actually use it in a ranking, I don't think anyone would care about it but a handful of other nerds.

I have read articles by reporters who follow the team, meaning it is their job, who understand that Rex has far more input on personnel decisions than his defenders think.

On the other hand I do not understand the argument his defenders make. If he has no real input on the Offense's roster, maybe that's because he doesn't want any? Or has no input to give? Maybe the FO doesn't give him input because they think he has nothing of value to give? Maybe being all in on Mark Sanchez he might even be gunshy himself?

I just don't understand why the "he has no responsibility for the roster!" defense makes sense. Probably because it doesn't.

In any event since I do think he's had much more input than his defenders think, it's more of a rhetorical concern than a practical one. Still, knowing how many successful HC's have much input on personnel, I don't see how Rex not being one of them is supposed to be an argument in his favor.

Wouldn't it be better to have an HC who is good at recognizing talent for the O?

Using the stats available on the linked site:

We rank 7th in rushing TDs against, 19th in passing TDs against, 17th in total TDs against... and 30th in FGs made against.

On offense, we rank 30th in total yards gained, 21st in time of possession and 26th in plays from scrimmage.

Using these basic stats, we can infer that our defense is being asked to hold offenses to less scores when they are getting the ball more, and in better position. Considering the number of FGs allowed vs. TDs, allowing for our offensive rankings, I'd summarize that the Jets D has done a very good job this year.

In fairness and when looking only at the D, it is not fair to look only at a yards per game stat in assessing the D, for the reasons that essentially have to do with the O performing poorly. More turnovers is certainly a factor, since it gives the opponent more possessions and more TOP.

But that is another thing that is not, should not, be in Rex's favor, since he has a responsiblity for the O as well.

THis would be a different argument if Rex was the DC and not the HC. But he is the HC.

We can also infer that the Jets secondary is weak. 19th in passing TD's and 17th in total TD's is not the sign of a very good D. Those numbers tell you that their D is average. Given the fact that they forced a lot of FG's and had to deal with opposing offenses good starting field position, I'd elevate this defense to above average. So in response to the OP, 12th ranked defense sounds about right where the Jets should be.

didn't we expect the secondary to be suspect going in? 1 returning starter 2 new safeties and a rookie cb. everyone is mad at the results this year but it seems to have played out exactly like it should have been expected.

I see you are still hanging on to the 2 championship games the jets reached to validate your point that he is a good HC, I'm using all 5 years and not only has he not won a playoff game in three years after making the playoffs his first 2 years, the team has regressed, it does not take three years to rebuild in today's NFL.

It does when your QBs are Mark Sanchez, Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith.

And look at Belicheck. He was a mediocre coach until Brady fell into his lap.

I use all 5 years too and the last 2 he did an outstanding job just to make us competitive. It's hard for fans who only see black and white #s to understand so I get why many want him gone but those folks are wrong and it's why we will never be a top franchise. Our owner listens to the fans far too often and fans in general are nitwits that don't truly understand the game.

The HC can not get all the blame for that, trading away picks and cap issues on top of players getting older and misses in the draft have lead to the team regressing. Not to mention injuries to very key players, Holmes/Revis/Keller last season. There's only so much scheming a coach can do at the end of the day the players have to make plays. This year was setup to be a disaster, our safeties are terrible we have a rookie CB starting opposite Cro who has always had awful technique and now he's lost some athleticism.

Demario Davis is starting in his second year in the NFL and the jury is out on what he will become. I'm not even going to get into the ineptitude of the offense because I would need 2 pages to get into that. Yes Rex Ryan needs to be held accountable and he will probably lose his job at the end of the season but our roster is pretty sad top to bottom.

Using statistics to analyze the performance of the HC is just plain silly. When you boil it down, it comes down to Championships/playoff wins/playoff appearances and overall record. With Rex, there are arguments to be made both ways which is why the debate is so heated.

  18. Jets easily have one of the better defensive units in the NFL. And that's with average DBs & below average LBs(Excluding Davis). Many fans have just been programmed to expect perfection from the defense as it is usually the team's only chance to win.Offenses are too good for that nowadays.

I can try to find my past posts and I will show you where I never wanted him to be the HC.

You say the fans in general are nitwits, ok. Well what do you say when Ozzie Newsome who knows more about the game than you and I will, passes over Rex for an unknown?

That to me was the writing on the wall Junc, when a man who has put together a top franchise as you call it passes on a coach who was on his staff.

You can argue for another year Junc, Rex is not a good HC, he is a good DC, I give him and have always given him credit for that.

I will watch and see how long it takes the Ravens to recover from all the skilled players they lost to FA, and retirement.
