Some* were talking extension 5 weeks ago.

Either way that was when the Jets were 5-4 and on their bye week. Since then they've went 1-4 with their only win against a horrendous Oakland team. It's no wonder people feel differently now, why is this such a surprise?

I am interested in the Arizona discussion. I have actually been following them somewhat. well more than I otherwise would have, but before i get to that...

    Zach,

I simply disagree with your assessment that Tanny was operating in a vacuum with no input from Rex. I clearly recall Ryan's direct involvement in picking Sanchez. It is also beyond dispute that Tanny was never a football guy, and to think Woody had him operating free of involvement by Rex is just not accurate, and also makes no sense. Yet you want to place ALL of the blame for roster problems on Tanny.

Ftr and unlike some I was all for getting rid of Tanny since he had to pay for such blunders as the Sanchez contract extension, the earlier contract given Wayne Hunter, and others. But really the Sanchez situation was grounds for termination. But... that does not mean I thought he was the only person responsible, and that includes Woody. I just completely disagree with your absolving Rex for personnel moves made while Tanny was still the GM.

I tend to agree with this analysis, with one exception that must be noted - Ken Whisenhunt was the HC in Arizona in 2012, and his background is offense. The Cards really replaced an offensive minded HC with another offensive minded HC.

But your point still holds. Yes, there were injuries, and a 4-0 start snowballed after some tough losses followed that start. More to the point i think the Cards organization felt their investment in Palmer would pay bigger dividends with Arians than Whisenhunt. This was because as I recall Arians was running an offense in Indy that looked like it would be a better fit for Palmer. In other words they felt they were trading a decent offensive minded HC for one who was a better fit. It also helped that Arians was coming off a roll in Indy.

In fact Whisenhunt may well have been in the wrong place at the wrong time regarding that season. He had after all coached his team to the SB while in AZ, something no Jet HC can claim since Weeb Ewbank. They even came close to winning it all.

In additional fact I would not rule out the Jets' considering hiring Whisenhunt as the HC. I think he has some history with Idzik, too.

Then why did Rex get brought back in the first place? We werent suppose to be good this season .The defense won us some games and kept us in others. But this was suppose to be a rebuilding year getting pieces in place for 2014.So witch one is it?We were never suppose to be a contender this year or in any playoff talks

I don't know why he was brought back in the first place. I would have started fresh with a new GM and coach. You will have to ask our terrible owner Woody Johnson about that jacked up logic.

Arians is a way more innovative offensive HC than Whisenhunt ever will be. I think Whisenhunt is decent but look what Arians did with the Colts last year coming off a horrendous season. Follow that up with him turning around the Cards in his one season there. I think people will begin to realize in the next year or two how elite of an offensive mind Arians is. It's amazing how much the Colts O has sputtered at times this year without him too. I said last year to go hard after him but no, we can't get rid of the defensive wizard know as Rex.

this was supposed to be, and is, a down year for a number of reasons but we have played a little better than our talent would suggest ... i think thats a testament to the team playing hard (if not always smart)

this team currently has about $40 mill in dead money and on IR. outside of bart scott (and i doubt rex was on board for guaranteeing scotts '12 salary for a modest saving in '11), i dont see how you can blame that on rex ... then we have high priced players like tone and cro who have had injuries make them a shell of their former selves. again, i dont see how that is rex's fault

after clearing sanchez, holmes, cro, and the dead money off of the books we have close to $50 mill in cap next year to go along with 10 draft picks (four in the top 75)

i think rex should be allowed to play out his contract next year and see what he can do with a full roster

To be fair, he helped shape the roster in 2009, bringing in Bart Scott and Jim Leonard and that defense was much better than 2008.

His influence on the defensive draft picks hasn't been all that bad, the linemen and linebackers have been good, but we may have whiffed on both corners.

I don't think we can put every personal mistake on him, I'm sure he would have liked to have kept Revis.

If anything he just believes way too much in "his" players.

In reading Collision Low Crossers, it just reenforces the fact that Rex won't be part of any offensive rebuild. Many of the things that were assumed "He knows nothing about offense" were confirmed in that book. But he also came across as very hands off, which makes me think the offense would be rebuild by Idzik, the scouts, and Marty Mornhinweg.

I think the scary thing about Rex is just how hands off he is, and how much faith he has in players in the face of factual evidence that they're not as good as he thinks.

The best argument for Rex at this point is continuity. Personally I think he's going to get shitcanned. I don't think they'll sign him to another contract, nor will they let him coach out a lame duck season.

    Money.

Why pay him to sit on the couch for two years, when you could throw him to the dogs this year to coach a team which clearly is rebuilding.

I thought I made it clear that I think Arians is a better fit for the Cards. And I would tend to agree he would have been a better fit with the Jets than Ryan, as well.

But in fairness to Whisenhunt, he did get the Cards to the SB, and last year his team's problems were not limited to their not having a better offensive scheme.

The other factor concerned Palmer himself. I do not take credit for this analysis, but recall instead reading an analysis of the type of O Arians ran in Indy and why that would be a great fit for Palmer. Palmer has not played perfectly this season, but considering that many were prepare to say he was finished, Arians has certainly gotten a good deal out of him.

We don't know to what extent Whisenhunt would have been terminated even if Arians were not available to the Cards. He might well have been fired anyway. But I see the move as much as about Arians, at least, as it was about Whisenhunt.

I pretty much feel with some reservations that Rex should be fired. But there is a sort of compromise middle ground, which is basically that Marty is retained, made Assistant Head Coach, given power to direct rebuilding the O, at least with roster imput, in camp and preparing for the games. I guess you can't realistically take away an HC's power to have an input on the O during the game.

Meanwhile you sign Rex to a one year extension. One year.

I can see the Jets doing this. I can't see them giving Rex a multi-year extension, and I can see them firing him. But if Woody doesn't feel good about firing him, this is a kind of half assed way to deal with the situation.

We just don't konw what burden of proof Rex had and has with Woody and Idzik. For all we know Woody got Idzik to accept Rex for his first year as GM by saying if you don't want him next year, then you can get rid of him. In which case Idzik will get rid of him.

But if there is no such agreement, and Woody has retained a big say (which I expect is the case) in what happens, then I think Rex will likely stay, even if I think he should go.

But he only gets one more year. Rex will likely agree to that.

I don't and didn't put every personnel mistake on him. I said he helped shape the roster. Which he did. I think it's safe to say he at the very least OK'd every defensive FA move. As for the draft picks, he has some hits and some misses. But at the end of the day the roster he helped shape is not that good of a defensive unit.

Continuity is nice if you're winning, but not for the sake of continuity. Not if you haven't made the playoffs in 3 years and the coaches strong suit (defense) isn't even strong.

Other than Cowher who had way more success than Rex in his first 5 years, what recent coach took more than 5 years to win a superbowl?

That's the key right there. Just to have things remain status quo without any improved results isn't stability, it's actually regression.

Rex helped shape the roster this year. He got Sanchez killed in a meaningless scrimmage and gave Ed Reed a job at the expense of Allen.

Losing Faneca and Woody are blows the team never really recovered from, especially Faneca. While Faneca didn't do anything after he left the Jets, neither did the Jets.

In general I think the roster is the problem at this point, and that highlights how bad Tannenbaum was and maybe... just maybe getting rid of him and not Rex was the right thing to do.

I'd be surprised if Woody Johnson actually went with a "give him one year and see" plan. If Woody Johnson believes in Rex as a coach, then Rex will stick around. There is precedent around the league: see Marvin Lewis.

The state of the Jets today is John Idzik... the team will rise and fall with his hiring and his draft picks. You can't evaluate his rookies after one year because you feel Rex only had that left in him. Three to four years down the road we will see if the Jets reap the rewards of John Idzik and his efforts, not today, and not next year, and not on what the Jets do with Rex.

Marvin Lewis, Lovie Smith, Andy Reid, Gary Kubiak, Jeff Fisher, Mike Smith.. Jim Schwartz got hired the same time as Rex, John Fox... There's a ton of coaches that stick to places because they change the culture into a winning one. The difference between these coaches and Rex is that they were either given the pieces, or given time to acquire the pieces to build their own contender. Rex was given the pieces to win in his first two years and he gave it a good run. Now that all those pieces are gone, he doesn't get another chance to draft and assemble a team? Especially with a new GM and scouting personel that built a possible Super Bowl team in Seattle?

Reid got fired it was good for both teams. The rest of the group is going to be fired. Jim Schwartz should not only be fired he should be hung in effigy in Detroit for the job he's doing there.
