    You are clueless brah.

You can't just magically find a HC that fits what we have in place already. It doesn't work that way, when you go to hire a new HC you have slim pickings to chose from.

Believe it or not, it usually takes a lot for an individual to be viewed as a qualified candidate. These guys aren't all over the place in the football world. If they fire Rex, they better have someone highly touted in mind because losing Rex will mean a lot of change. We will lose a lot of great things that Rex offers.

The defense is one of them. I'm telling you right now if we get another HC, that likely means we will be hiring someone with a strong offensive mindset, which on turn means this defense will be gonzo.

As far as the talking rough comment you got going on up there, that's just bullshit. Plain an simple.

We beat the shit out of teams the first two years Rex was here, you don make it to two straight AFC title games if your a pussy team.

The only time I ever felt like we truly got our asses beat was the final game against Miami a couple years ago. The players gave up, got smacked in the mouth and destroyed mentally. The players quit on this team and Rex. That was really bad.

    ...but

Rex Ryan fixed all of that the following year though. So. Plus.

    Jets, Jets

The NFL is an offensive league. I wish it wasn't but it is. Rex really doesn't know how to build one. Turning over that part to another coach is the worst thing he could have done.

I totally agree with this. Rex should have been fired when Tanny was, but in typical Jets fashion, he wasn't, so now we're in yet another weird position.

I agree that we don't want to saddle the new HC with coordinators or coaches that aren't his choice. He must be able to choose his own CS or at least his coordinators and then maybe they hire their underlings. I'm not sure how that works.

If we hire an offensive-minded HC, I think bottom line is he has to be a WCO disciple. It's up to him whether he keeps MM and Lee, but they shouldn't hire anyone who is going to change the offensive system UNLESS that guy convinces Idzik that a different offensive system would be a better fit for Geno. I'm not an expert on those things so I don't know whether the WCO is the best fit for Geno, but I do like that system. Since the offense will be basically remade, I don't think it really matters that much except for Geno, and some Jets fans would say that he shouldn't matter.

MM doesn't have to stay, although I think it would probably be best if he did. That said, it is my understanding that all WCO offenses use basically the same terminology and base plays, each OC just has different ways of tweaking it and different emphases, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if a different WCO OC was brought in. He might do a better job than MM in developing Geno.

In terms of the D, I don't think it matters as much as it has with some earlier regimes since the front 7 is used to playing all kinds of fronts, so I don't think transitioning to the 4-3 as the base would mean that we'd have to gut the front 7 and start over. In either a 3-4 or 4-3 there are some positions they need to address. Still, hopefully, they wouldn't change the base system as that would mean they'd have different responsibilities, roles and there would be the down period of learning the new system. Hopefully, Idzik is smart enough to understand that. If he's not, then he's not the right man for the GM job anyway, and even if Rex stays things probably won't work out, even if Rex is able to correct all his flaws.

I would also hope that the new HC and DC are smart enough to know that Karl Dunbar is the best DL coach in the business and want him to stay. I wouldn't be happy if we lost him as a result of Rex leaving, but that is not a reason to not fire Rex if Idzik doesn't feel he's the right man to serve as HC going forward.

Whatever. We disagree. That's what makes life and football discussion boards interesting.

Clueless? Perhaps, but I'd say that to say that there's only one way "things work" flies in the face of reality of what life is like. There are very, VERY few things in life that only work one way, in spite of many who try to insist that things only work one way (their way) or it's the highway.

Rexs defense has gotten worse every year.

He's also not the only guy around who can call a defense. I'll bet someone else could have plenty of success with the 37 1st round picks we have on that side of the ball.

But where is the offense? Does Rex have half a clue about the offense because it has sucked big dicks since he's been here.

The league is favoring offense more and more and we're supposed to be happy with a guy who can't get dick out of his offense and routinely gets picked apart on defense now?

The d isn't even close to dominant anymore.

Sorry if I misunderstood you. I like Marty a lot, and think he has done a great job and is one of the best OCs the Jets have ever had. Chances are he would leave if Rex is hired, but it's not a given. That could stunt Geno's growth, but based on the comments I see on here, a lot of Jets fans don't think Geno has any potential anyway.

Personally, I still think Geno can develop into a very good QB. If MM does leave, the question would be whether Geno and that new OC are a good "fit", and whether his system would fit Geno's talents. If it's a WCO system, it may not be so dramatic a change for Geno unless the new OC and he have a personality clash. That said, we really don't know how MM and Geno get along or what one thinks of the other. It's possible, that MM may not believe in Geno or may not be the best person to help Geno develop. I don't think MM's ever had to develop a young QB before. I think he's always had a veteran QB to work with as his starter. I don't know how much he may have helped Foles in Philly. Thus, it is possible that a new OC could be better for Geno and for the Jets. I think it's possible that with a new OC, as long as he runs a WCO, the change wouldn't have that much effect on Kerley, the RBs, or the OL. Geno may not even be the answer at QB, so would you really want to avoid making a possibly needed HC change in order to make things best for Geno, when he may not even wind up being in the Jets' long term plans?

What would you think if Rex was fired, MM was hired as the new HC, Lee was retained either as QB coach or OC, and Karl Dunbar was named the DC?

Consistency at coaching is underrated... that's why I think its imperative that the Jets keep the coaching staff in place if Idzik and the brass believe that Geno has potential to be a good long term starting QB. If after one year they think he's a bag of wind, then it would make more sense to possibly clean house and start fresh at head coach, OC, and QB. Personally, I believe this group can improve and grow. I don't believe Geno is done... he's a rookie in a town that is waaaaaaaaay too impatient.

As for the scenario you laid out... Mornhinweg as a head coach would be a very difficult sell here... he was absolutely awful as a head coach in Detroit, and currently the Jets don't have the tools in place to give him a leg up if he took the coaching job. I'd imagine a new head coach not only would have to be an extremely bright offensive mind, but also someone who is great at working with a young team in order to build it up from the ground up.

Consistency may be underrated by some, but not by me. The thing is, I think that someone has to have a basic competency, and shown that they are capable of learning and adapting in order for that consistency to lead to anything good. Consistency just for the sake of consistency without that basic competency only leads to mediocrity. Five years is enough imo, and the team is going backwards not forwards.

I agree that MM would be a hard sell here as HC, and for good reason. He did stink as a HC before, and he may not be the right person to build a young team or QB. That said, who was the GM during MM's tenure as HC with the Lions? Was it Matt Millen? If so, I think it's entirely possible that the reason he failed so badly was because he had no talent to work with. Even if that wasn't a big part of his failure, is it not possible that he could have learned a lot from working with Andy Reid for all those years? You like the job he's done as the OC, and think he's the right guy to develop Geno. You also want consistency. Keeping MM as the HC would offer offensive consistency, and if Dunbar or Thurmond were hired as DC, there could be defensive consistency as well.

As for the lack of weapons, if Idzik does the job he was hired to do, then MM or whoever the new HC/OC will be will have much better offensive "weapons" to work with (both from FA and the draft).

I'm not saying that's what I'd want or what I think the best option is. Change for the sake of change is not the good. When change is made, there should be valid reasons for that change, and it should be made with the expectation that things will improve with the change. If Idzik decides to fire Rex, then he not only definitely should already have a perspective HC in mind that he thinks would be an improvement, or have several strong possibilities that he thinks could be an improvement and have some idea of whether they might have interest in the Jets job.

lol, how would removing Rex from the equation, while retaining all other coaches, improve the team?

I love Dunbar. He's an incredible teacher and a huge asset to the team. He's not the defensive innovator or game planner Rex is, and certainly would not be a DC upgrade.
and Marty is a great offensive mind, but i don't think a HC upgrade in any sense.

Firing Rex will mean a near clean sweep of all coaches. This sets us back even further in my opinion, and is even a worse option.

Keep Rex, MM, Thurman, Kotwica, Lee, Dunbar. Evaluate all other position coaches closely, and determine if any upgrades can be made. That's all they need to do in terms of coaching. The real offseason challenge is building up the offensive personnel while shoring up some holes in the D.

Can't figure out why all the obsessed speculation continues.

The decision has been made, the contract signed...Rex Ryan will be the HC of the NYJ for the next five seasons because he clearly deserves it as terrific head coaches are hard to find and need to be retained and rewarded.

I think he's proven his point to stay on board as coach. He took the predicted #32 team into a 6-7 team with the worst quarterback play in the league. Only way I see him getting canned is if we get blown out all three of these next games.
Our defense is too nasty and he's too responsible for it to can him because his rookie QB forgot how to throw from Halloween until last Sunday. We finally have an O-coordinator worth a damn we need some weapons and time with this coaching staff or we're just moving backwards again.

If he is gone, I could see us keeping Thurman on the defensive side of the ball just to keep some sort of continuity with the scheme, as long as the new HC doesn't want to change schemes. Thurman is bound to have learned something over the past couple of months about being a DC.
