got that right. the ravens and steelers playing each other helps things a bit, not sure who I'd rather lose as it really doesn't make any difference. after week 13, PIT plays vs MIA, vs CIN, @ GB, and vs CLE BAL plays vs MIN, @ DET, vs NEP, @ CIN toss up?
The winner needs to lose twice. I'd say it's better if the Ravens win. losing 2 games @ Det, Vs NE and @ CIN is certainly possible.
The competition was a mirage early on. We ran into an imploding Bucs team before anybody knew they were imploding. Tom Brady had no weapons at all in week 2 and we almost snuck out of there with a win because of that. The Bills had no secondary in week 3. The Titans, a thoroughly mediocre team destroyed us week 4. Then we ran into the now 2-9 Falcons sliding downhill at 1-3 when we played them. The Steelers dominated us. We played a good game against the Pats at home and won. Then got destroyed by the Bengals on the road. Good game against the Saints. Then got whacked by the Bills. It just isn't a good team. Nobody should have been looking at the playoffs seriously, but people were and so now the 5-6 Jets are a disappointment despite the fact that they could easily be the 3-8 or 2-9 Jets with a few bounces going the other way.
Can the Jets still win the division? If the Pats lose to Denver and then go 2-3 over the last five while the Jets go 4-1, who wins the division? I know thats a crazy scenario, but I might as well ask.
I understand and know that we are still "in the hunt" and all. But how can anyone really, truly, with a straight face, believe we will make the playoffs?
It depends on who the Jets lose to.... If Buffalo wins out their remaining games and finishes at 9-7.... If the Jets lose a game to Miami Buffalo will have the tiebreaker and be in 2nd place. First tiebreaker is H2H which was split, second tiebrewkaer is divisional record which BUF would be 4-2 vs Jets 3-3. IF Jets sweep MIA, beat CAR, CLE and lose to OAK...then the Jets would have the the common games tiebreaker where BUF 1-1 in noncommon games while Jets went 0-2..thus if they were tied, Jets would have a better common game record. If the Jets were to beat MIA twice, OAK and CAR but lose to CLE then they would be 4-0..against NFC, while BUF would be 3-1...thus BUF would have the edge in conference record...thus wining the 4th tiebreaker. If the Jets were to sweep MIA, and beat OAK and CLE, but lose to CAR...then the tiebreaker get complicated.... 1. BUF and JETS split H2H 2. BUF and JETS were 4-2 in division 3. BUF and JETS had a non common record of 1-1 thus both common game of 8-6. 4. BUF and JETS have same conference record of 6-6 against AFC and 3-1 againtst NFC the next two tiebreakers are: (numbers are through week 12--these numbers can be adjusted by adding 1 to every win teams get this season on out.... 5. strength of schedule it washes out except for noncommon team records of: BUF KC JAX = 9 + 2= 11 JETS OAK TEN = 4 + 5= 9 add the two teams wins totals...the higher number wins this tiebreaker. If they are tied it goes to the next tiebreaker: .6. strength of victory BUF: NE, MIA MIA, JETS, BAL, TB, CAR, ATL, JAX JETS: NE, MIA, MIA, BUF, CLE, TB, NO, ATL, OAK this simplifies to: BUF: BAL, CAR, JAX= 5+8+2= 15 JETS: CLE, NO, OAK= 4+9+4= 17 BUF going 9-7 is not that far of a reach. They have the easiest next 3 games in the league playing 3 2 win teams in ATL, TB, and JAX, then finish at home against MIA, and finish at a NE team that could be resting players. At 8-8 the same tiebreakers still apply. You have to sort teams in the division first before even deciding wild card. The Jets could have wild card tiebreakers on many teams in other divisions...but if they cant get to 2nd place.....they cant be applied.
under your scenario its not possible, the jets would be 9-7 the pats would be 10-6. But lets be real here, it was never REALLLY possible at this point, new england plays the texans, ravens, bills, dolphins and browns, they'll probably win 4 out of five of those and thats with a variable loss in mind. if anything we may actually want them to win to keep us in the wild card.
It's the exact same position as at the bye - need to win our home games and once on the road. The other contenders will beat each other enough.
Close this fucking thread. It's starting to sound like the 24 hours before the Titans game last December. It'll be a week or so before the messages read "we only need to win out" and then another week after that "if the Ravens, Chargers, Browns, Steelers, Titans, Raiders and Dolphins all lose then we're IN!!!!"
Westoff pretty much said on the post game that he expected in training camp that the lack of talent to show through --- he was a little surprised it did not surface earlier.
Lack of talent is easily exposed when one phase of your game is god awful. You have an average offense you can overcome some talent deficiencies, but when your QB play is beyond awful it can expose other things. You end up having your defense on the field a lot more than you would like, you fail to get your receivers in the mix, your inability to pass allows more guys to play in the box to stop the run and rush. You end up looking worse than you are and that is what is happening now.
The Jets making the playoffs probably requires the Pats beating the Ravens, Dolphins and Browns or losing to all 3 of those teams. Seriously though, why is anybody still talking playoffs? The team is -101 in points differential this year. That's not a team that is going to make the playoffs.
The lack of talent at receiver is just amazing. The Jets have two talented receivers in Holmes and Kerley and one of them has been missing in action in almost every game they've played. They have a mess at TE with more talent all up in the air. Geno is not playing well enough to keep his job but nobody else is helping him out at all.
I think Geno's poor play is more to blame for the receiver issues than anything else. Geno doesn't make things easy on himself or the receivers. Just watching games yesterday every team in the NFL employs slants, curls, outs, back shoulder, etc.. Geno can't run any of those plays. Now he can't even roll out and make a decent throw. He never comes off his primary receiver and defenses know it. They can basically just cover one guy and that is who Geno is going to throw it to because he can't cycle through options.
The receivers are responsible for the receiver issues. Geno is responsible for the Geno issues. The fact that he is locking in on one or two receivers a game is because that's all he has available in that game. Earlier in the year when he actually had Kerley, Holmes and Winslow all available he was doing fine spreading the ball around and getting yards and the main problem was the turnovers. After he started losing guys the spreading the ball around went away and the yards went away and the turnovers remained a glaring issue. Go look at the games where he had multiple options available that weren't guys right off the street. Those games weren't always pretty but the Jets could move the ball and they scored some. Now look at the games where Holmes, Winslow and Kerley are out and things are just ugly as you can get. Geno isn't showing the talent to be a difference maker at QB but he has nobody to work with a lot of the time and you can't make street guys into acceptable receivers except when they occasionally catch somebody off-guard.
