With what seems to be a regression by Geno over the last month a lot of us are in full blown hysterics mode. I think our successes early in the season let us put the cart in front of the horse. This season was supposed to be a rebuilding year. We have bottom of the barrel receiving talent and a piecemeal secondary who's star player who has always been streaky, which is fine for a complimentary player when you can afford it. Anyway, for us to be in the conversation for a playoff spot is fantastic considering how much of our team is young, off the street or holding the fort on both sides of the ball. Unfortunatley, like most people, our early season success has soured the milk of rebuilding. The fact that this turn for the worse has brought out the SOJF and boo birds shouldn't surprise anybody. This team has made book on sketchy picks, dodgy talent and wasted opportunites. How many of us Jet fans can point to single instances of particular insanity that STILL make us insane; I offer the #9 pick Kyle "MOTHERFUCKING" Brady as my offering at the alter of the god of idiocy. I think as a fanbase we are tired of every other team hitting pay dirt while we dance the jiggity jig with a bag full of fools gold. Other teams seem to always have some guys at every position that are young and showing flashes of promise meanwhile time and time again our players, even the good ones, seem to be half broken. The ones that do pan out end up panning out for other teams once we get rid of them. So, anyway, now the QB we all thought should ride the pine for a while is showing that he does in-fact need to ride the pine for a while and the claptrap offense we have around him is sputtering. Unless we can take somebody at the very top of the draft I think we should lay off picking another QB next year. Although Geno has been playing, very earlily infact, like Mark Sanchez he has shown the ability to make plays with his feet and arm that Sanchez almost never made. I think I can count one hand the number of times Sanchez sucessfully hit one of our backs square in the hands out in the flat or made the type of offbalance scrambling toss Geno made today that Crumbleland put on the ground. There is some hoep for Geno is we don't break his spirit the was Sanchez was broken. Speaking of which, what the hell is wrong with our oline? Brick and Mangold while seemingly losing a step aren't this bad and Howard is surprisingly solid. Our problem is that our guards just aren't pulling their weight, IMO. This is taxing the end and middle to no ends and it needs to get fixed. But like most things about the Jets its a problem that never seems to get completely fixed and once it does we let the players slip away. I digress, I'm getting away from the point which is that Geno will never be able to get himself together if he, much like Sanchez, is getting smashed to hell. QB's don't generally do well getting run over all the time and for so many people to believe that a QB should thrive under pressure all the time is foolish. The player that is considered one of the "best ever" up in NE is a bum once you get on him and believe me if he took the sort of flak both Sanchez and Smith have taken he'd be a shaky ass mess as well. In closing I will say that while I am generally opptimistic about things with Idzik going forward I am not so much with Rex. It's year 5 and much like our QB's the talent might be there but he's just not putting it all together. Terrible game management and spotty prep is leading me to the opinion that he needs to be let go. Through the entirety of Ryans' time as coach he has had a bad habit of throwing away time outs like year old penny candy. This coupled with terrible time management in critical situations has so much been a feature of his coaching style that I feel like we start each half with one less TO than the other team.Unfortunately, I think this is going to be the only way for Ryan to reach his pinnacle level of talent is to be canned. He'll have to look closely at what he did wrong and either correct it or spend the rest of his NFL life as a DC. That's it this post as it's far too long and rambling. In short I know we are all tired of the same old gump from this team but we need to hold the course with Geno and that may mean benching him for Simms. No matter who we throw back there behind center next year we need to put some weapons around him and a stout line in front of him. No more QB's, no more defense. We go offense next year, all offense all the time. No QB we get is going to do anything but get destroyed with the offense built as it is. If Ben "insert joke here" Rothlisberger is available we need to take a run at him and let Geno learn from the bench. NO matter if it's Geno, Ben, Simms or god knows who is back there we NEED to first and foremost put some real effort into bringing the entire offense up to par because I had today the first real pang of regret we may waste the time we have with the "Sons of Anarchy" because we keep retreading a busted tire offense.
Here is a question for our QB challenged team. Is Ryan Mallet the answer to our long term QB question? If so, are you willing to ride out next year without a solid QB to roll the dice on getting Mallet to lead our team in 2015? Does that mean starting Sanchez / Geno or is there another short term solution while we wait?
I don't want Mallet. He might be another Matt Flynn. Give me a young vet that is somewhat proven like a Matt Schuab or even Fitzpatrick.
Honestly I don't know, I think that's the problem. That's why if the Roth rumors or true we must kick the tires. I have the feeling we might be kicking tires on Vick if he's out in Philly next year. Don't really know enough about Mallet to say anything about him.
I agree, fixing the Oline is more important than Drafting another project qb or seeking expensive veteran qb in the off season.
I keep hearing this argument and I've stated before that the O-line can only do so much against a certain number of defenders...but, so I do not place my foot into my mouth when I break down the game tape this week I will chart defenders in the box and how many rush. Play by play...I will check in later.
This team has been playing with smoke and mirrors. Mallet is NOT the answer. Look at Cassell what he did once he left N.E. QBs in Belichicken's system flourish. Once they leave they suck. The problem with this team starts at the top. Woody Johnson. He has no clue on what it takes to be an owner. We need a new owner. We have no talent on this current team that wants to play. Rex is hopefully on his last leg with this team.
Look at Brady this year. I mean really LOOK at him. The question isn't whether Mallet is the Jets QB in 2015, the question is whether he's the Pats QB that year. Brady is not done yet but when you're 36 and you take a big step down it's most likely a new plateau and only for a couple of years at best.
How much is that Brady or the crappy receiving core he has to work with this year? He has just led his team back from a 24pt deficit and looks like vintage Brady. Guy never quits, he's a real fuck! lmao, but I respect him. We could only hope to ever have a QB like Brady.
This goes back to Rex telling Cotchery And Edwards to take a hike when Sanchez was finally getting comfortable with them. If you look at Brady Manning and so on they always have a guy like Cotchery around, the guy that will go over the middle and do anything to catch the ball. Bree's uses Sproles this way, Rivers uses Woodhead in this way Who does Rex have, who did he replace Cotchery with? This team is in rough shape personnel wise and Rex made it this way.
Kerley isn't quite that good but he is a very good slot receiver when there is anybody outside of him. We need a reliable outside receiver at a minimum. Somebody who can get open and catch 5 balls if he gets targeted 7 or 8 times a game. A star caliber receiver would be nice but isn't a necessity at this point. The Jets problems at receiver are that the talented guys have been hurt and the backups are backups for a reason. This was kind of going to be the story after the Jets used the early picks on defense and at QB. Then they used the later picks to try to solidify the o-line and get a few developmental pieces. Next year they have a chance to plug in some skill position players with a deep draft at WR. They'll have a chance to bring in a QB at some point also to compete with Geno. The Seahawks hired Pete Carroll in 2010. The rebuild went 7-9, 7-9, 11-5, 10-1. The Jets aren't going to get it done faster than that although they might have some upside next year if Rex is still here after they have really begun the rebuild on offense.
nice post op. and very level headed which is not something i expected to see around here today. i appreciate your understanding and patience and hope that it rubs off on some others. geno has been pretty horrible, the oline has been dismal and we are still getting beaten over the top for long gains. idzik i think has put together some pieces that can be built around, i think they will be built around and this will be a very very good team in 2 years. will geno be the guy who leads them there? maybe, he has shown flashes of what it takes to be a big time qb, right now however he is handcuffed, not supported and just bad. his receiving corp and oline have not helped him one single bit... BUT if you want to be a big time qb you need to overcome those things. i think the fact that they have drawn back the reigns on him as far as they have is going to hurt his development. i thought he was a little too loose in the beginning of the year but yesterday they just didnt even let him throw the ball. i know wind, cold blah blah blah he needed to be throwing the ball more yesterday if only to see if he can be that guy. last night i pondered, 2 qbs, 3 ocs, 5 years, same problems.... whats the lowest common denominator? talent, yes to a point but i am looking straight at rex right now, he is hte lowest common denominator. a defense first guy who it appears from news coming out, got his way and got his defensive guys to make his top 10 defense. while leaving the offense working with scraps. thats NOT what a head coach who is a defensive genius is supposed to do. he is supposed to use his great defensive knowledge to get more out of less and let the other side of the ball get the talent to compete. im not a huge rex fan nor am i a rex hater, but as of right now i see him as the lowest common denominator. and i am fairly confident he will be goners at the end of the season.
We need a player at receiver that would not be in the league if he would not go over the middle and give himself up, look at who in the Dallas game caught the last ball from Romo, named Beasley, Sproles for Orleans Welker, Edelman so on . We had Chrebet do it for years, Belechek has had one wherever he has been, McConkey with the old giants, Chrebet with the jets, Welker, now AmendolaEdelman, he used Woodhead for a couple of years. Do you notice the great catches Holmes will have outside the numbers and the alligator arms he has inside the numbers. It is not hard to notice.
This is going to be a big decision for the Jets at the end of the season. I think if the Jets pull out of their little tailspin (first back to back losses all season) and finish with 7 or 8 wins the odds are good Rex is back with at least a modest extension. As you point out the pattern of restocking the defense while ignoring the offense just isn't going to work moving forward. The Jets do need a couple of pieces on that side of the ball but they have a flaming mess on the other side and they have to put out that fire before they continue crafting his defense. One thing to realize in the big picture is that part of the rebuild is nearing completion. The Jets have got a defense right now that is pretty competitive compared to the rest of the NFL. Sacking Rex will set that back and runs the risk of having the Jets alternately building on one side of the ball or the other for several more seasons. What you do with Rex is a big decision that has enormous ramifications for everybody moving forward. It's harder to see the Jets as competitive in 2015 if they hire a new coach in 2014 or 2015. The answer may well be to give Rex that modest extension that gives him clout for 2014 and 2015 and then make the decision after 2015 if the team hasn't made real strides in the interim. If the Jets collapse at this point, well that's unfortunate and would likely lead to Rex's exit. That's a result that nobody should want. BTW, for people looking for a comparison for what Rex has done this year go take a look at the Vikings in 2011. 3-13 with a sputtering rookie QB and the NFL sack leader in Jared Allen. They wound up at -109 points at the end of the year. They were 2-9 at the 11 game mark. That the Jets have managed 5-6 to date is a miracle and miracles don't happen with bad coaching as part of the process.
I agree with all of this. The tailspin is scary, bc it doesn't look good at all. If we drop 4-5 of the next 5 Rex head is easily "headed" to the chopping block. That could easily kill the one side of the football we are good at. I am crossing my fingers we win at least 2 more and Rex secures his job. I really want 3 and a chance at the playoffs, but 2 and Rex back is worth it for real shot at contending next season. Build off this running game and fix the Offensive line. Play your little QB competition in camp/preseason and be ready to roll with Kerley and Co. which should include production possession receivers (no more flashy bullshit, blue collar workers only).
great post brad, but dont you think that the gm is smarter than to look at any 4 or 5 game stretch? i mean he should have a master plan and decide whether he has his people in place or not. rex is VERY appealing short term. its the long term stuff that frustrates me and makes me wonder if he is the guy.
