I am not saying give Browner big money, what I am saying is kick the tires. The kid is big, physical, and can run/cover with the best of them. Between him and a good safety we fixed the back end.
if were cutting cro, id rather go after alterraun verner and jairus byrd the titans have already paid mccourty, so theres a real possibility that they let verner walk
I think those two guys will cost way too much, Verner is arguably a top 5 corner in this league now and is going to get paid, the same can be said for Byrd. Verner will most likely get the franchise tag and Byrd is 2 years older than Jenkins. I think Jenkins and Shields are better fits for us.
You really shouldn't give ANY NFL player a significant chunk of cash after the age of 28 or so. The guys you want to give the bulk of your money too are the young guys who play for you who are deserving of a big contract for their prime seasons to come. If you have a good 29 year old QB and it takes $10-12M of the cap to keep him maybe that's a good risk. Obviously if you have an all-world RB at the same age it is not. Going into next year the only major decisions the Jets have to make in terms of keep/cut are Santonio Holmes and Antonio Cromartie. Mark Sanchez is an easy cut and as much as John Idzik likes competition I don't think he's going to inject that factor back into the clubhouse after watching the hairband all last summer. Sanchez could approach the Jets with a tremendous salary cut to remain as competition likely to wind up at backup QB but I think that's the only way he stays. The other vets who might be at risk as cap cuts are either very tightly tied to the Jets by past cap maneuvers, are playing their best football right now with lower cap numbers next year, or are on short term contracts that either expire after the season or after 2014. D'Brick is in the first category, giving him probably another season to return to form. Harris is in the second. Antwan Barnes and Kellen Winslow are in the third. The Jets do have a bunch of decisions to make on their younger players. Some of the decisions are no-brainers, like Mo Wilkerson getting a big new deal. Others are tougher and revolve around who to remove from potential free agency in 2015. That group includes Jeremy Kerley, Bilal Powell, Kyle Wilson, Kenrick Ellis, David Nelson and Jaiqwuan Jarrett. After Wilkerson's very big deal who else is worth paying a premium to retain? Kerley, Powell and Wilson all have well-defined roles for the Jets. The others may or may not after that big draft class rolls in. Austin Howard, BTW, is a UFA after the season. The Jets are going to have to make a quick decision on him one way or the other. The best decision might be to let him test the market and see what develops.
No chance. Verner is one of the best corners in the league, Tennessee will do everything to keep him. Byrd wants to be the highest paid safety, so he gets a pass from me.
of course tennesee may franchise verner, but how much are they willing to commit to the CB position, is my question everyone would like to be the highest paid, doesnt mean its going to happen ... he'll likely get paid as top five at his position but i think its worth it because a true center field safety would put this defense over the top (given how many single high looks we run)
Seahawks are not going to have enough money to keep everyone... Say the decide to keep Browner and others, but decide to let Earl Thomas go(or we just offer him a better deal). He is playing at an elite level and is still very young, we have that Idzik connection and as far as I know he has not come out asking to be the highest paid safety. If we could sign him, verner(I still have hope in that), and maclin. Cut Sanchez,Holmes, Cro. Draft Khalil Mack in first round, Craig Loston with Bucs 3rd rounder and spend rest of our high picks on the O we would be goldon. Also would like to sign a player like Jon Asomoah to plug in the O-line. I think it would be okay to let Colon, Ducasse, go and move foward with Winters at one spot as well as possibly spend a pick on it in the draft(interior O-line that is). Btw what do you guys think of switching back to 4-3 next year to bring coples back to the D-line? I think he has definitely been more effective and comfortable there as we have seen so far and if we draft Mack we can have Demario play the other OLB slot with David Harris in the middle. Demario came out as an OLB and god knows we all have seen he has the speed to be one.
I just think you have to have a mix of draft and free agency. You have to fill holes both ways. Colon has played well and does not make much, same for Cumberland. We might have hit on Reed also. There are a lot of moving parts over the next 2 years as this is going to shape our future...
never sign a major free agent for 2 reasons 1. there is a reason he left(he's either too expensive or a headcase) 2. they are always older(28+ most of the time and you wont get the years out of them) free agency is used for short term fixes, fill holes, get some depth draft is used for your top talent and franchise guys now there are some exceptions to both but for the most part thats how you build a team I hope we never give a free agent more than 3 years ever again
Why not go after Maclin in FA? He's only 25, granted coming off a ACL tear, but he would be reasonably cheap and he knows the offense. Then if Lee falls to us in the draft then you jump on it. Unless Mack is available. We so badly need a pass rusher. I would flip a coin at that point. Either one would fill a need. A WR core of Lee, Maclin, and Kerley would be nice. Hopefully Sudfeld can live up to the hype he was getting in training camp, then the TE position would solidified as well. Cumberland is too inconsistent for me. Makes a great play then drops an easy pass. Use a couple late draft picks to get some more depth at OL.
He's really the only UFA I'm slightly intrigued by. He is familiar with MM's system, and there is no doubt if we do sign him, it's because MM really thinks he'll excel in the system. His ACL tear would hopefully keep his cost down. That being said, if we do sign Maclin, that should absolutely have no impact in the way we draft (as you alluded to). If the BPA in the 1st or 2nd is a WR, you still take him.
Everyone that talks about OLB in the draft yet not one person ever brings up Michael Sam from Mizzou...kid is a Juston Houston clone.
i can see him coming here on a 1 year prove it deal with marty's blessing. but is idzic willing to sign him and lose a potential comp pick? i am very curious to see if idzic is always going to go for the comp picks or if this past offseason was a 1 year plan to infuse youth into the roster quickly. if its accumulate as many draft picks as possible than howard is a goner.he is playing well enough to get a 5th back for his departure.
Absolutely no way. Howard is our best lineman based on this year's play. A core of Brick Mangold Howard is very strong moving forward and we could have a chance to outbid Asomoah from the Chiefs at guard and possibly have the best OL in the league. Could also target Orakpo or Ward on defense and a bunch of WRs/TEs. Can't imagine Idzik will let any of the talent walk with so many contracts coming off the books next year, and I'd be very disappointed if he doesn't bring in at least one premium FA after cutting Sanchez and Holmes. There are probably close to 10 guys in FA that could come in and improve a position more than any rookie could, and there is enough cap space to work with next year so there's no reason not to do it.
I'm not even saying I necessarily want Maclin, but he's the only somewhat big-time UFA that would make even a little bit of sense. In regards to the comp picks, completely different situations. Last year, we weren't planning on resigning Landry, Devito, Greene, Keller, or Slauson. They were all expendable. Greene was very mediocre and both Powell+McKnight were showing promise, Devito was getting pushed out by Coples, we weren't going to invest 6M in an injury prone Landry, and Slauson was proven useless without Callahan's zone scheme. Keller was the only player that we "lost" that we may have not planned on losing, and even then he isn't a good fit in this offense. Too small to be a big-time TE, and not athletic enough to be a WR that can line up in the slot like a Graham. Once we were losing all those players, it made sense Idzik didn't sign many FA to try and get picks. We aren't going to purposely LOSE players that will be a key part of our future (i.e. Howard) just to get picks.
Pitta, Finley if he recovers, Nicks, Decker, Tate, Orakpo, TJ Ward, Asamoah all would fill gaping needs. There are quite a few options out there and Idzik should absolutely bring in at least one.
Where are we going to have the cap space when Wilkerson, Coples, Richardson, Snacks, Geno, and hopefully Milliner gets new deals?
wtf? Richardson, Geno, and Milliner are rookies they're signed for 3 more years. Idzik can pay Snacks dirt again next year and tag him or extend in '15, only Wilkerson and Howard need to be taken care of next year. 2-3 years down the road when those contracts need to be taken care of Cromartie will be gone as will Harris probably. You either use it or lose it in a cap system.
