Knowing what we know about Idzick and his long term vision to build from within, one can speculate that free agency moves that would require trading draft picks and or sizable $$ contracts will be the exception rather than the rule. Couple that with the need to re negotiate and lock in place a couple of our super star players, at least MoWilk for sure, the chances are even slimmer but may bel not totally out of the question. My question then is this, IF we have the cap room for at least on big free agency acquisition that could instantly upgrade this team, AND looking at what the draft has to offer in area of need, what position should the Jets target? Should it be OLB, WR, TE or Safety to name the most pressing in my humble opinion. My gut tells me Safety and TE are the two positions were its harder to immediately contribute at a pro level but what do I know. I know I'm trying to rush the GMs plan but from my view point if we target free agency for a stud performer my preference would be TE. What do you guys think?
I'm all for Jarius Byrd in free agency. Hed shore up our coverage deficiencies real quick n help tremendously against Gronk n all the other TE freaks in the league
i don't see idz spending big money on any one f.a. i expect to see more of what we have already seen. a bunch of guys being signed of the scrap heap or buried on other teams depth charts. i don't think idzick believes in the 1 guy cure all instead use a bunch of cheap labor via f.a. and the draft to sort out positions by forcing players to work for p.t. and roster spots. so the dreams of jimmy graham and jarius byrd are probably a long shot. the good news is we should be able to sign our home grown talent and avoid most cap issues while staying young. the bad news is march is going to be pretty boring
I'd like to see a real top flight big WR, someone teams need to game plan for. I think the jury is still out on TE because we still have half a season to see if the kid we picked up from NE shows something. If we can convince Holmes to renegotiate to stay on I'd really love that. Add that big time WR( not sure who? ) to a team of Holmes Kearly Nelson( who I think needs to be resigned) & Hill along with a healthy Goodsen Ivory & Powell and I think we've got some pretty sweet play makers.
I'm guessing that Idzik will hunt for bargains in free agency to fill gaps for the short term while also drafting competition in those slots that he'd rather have as the long term solution. The problem with free agents is that most of them come with significant down side, in the form of cap impact or aging/injury issues. Some of them come with the built-in downside of denying the Jets compensation picks for free agents the team loses. If you could find a 25 or 26 year old player who was good enough to hold down the slot you were filling without also hurting the cap then you're ahead of the game but those guys are hard to find. You've got to gamble on people like Mike Goodson and we've seen where that can go.
I would really look at Brandon Browner, as he would help the backend out. I would either tell Holmes pay cut or buy, and then look at Maclin as his replacement if he is healthy. I would draft Mike Evans. Barnes will be back and he helps the OLB core but we draft another in the 2nd round. Seeing as we took the best wideout in the first. Who are some good but not great safeties that are free agents that are better that landry?
I would not expect much of a free agent splash as others have said. We need to lock up Wilkerson. New or restructured contracts will be needed to keep other guys around. We will bargain hunt and build through the draft. Jimmy Graham is the most interesting of free agents to me, but it think it's a pipe dream. We will fill obvious holes with short term deals.
Resign our home grown talent(wilk) and draft BPA...that is how you create a team who will win in the long run...
I wouldnt touch Browner, he's 29 going on 30 and u don't give CBs big contracts after 30, plus he's been the #2 corner on the seahawks id rather have a younger guy. Sam Shields out of GB would be an awesome signing.
