Jason Gay: Another Jets Super Bowl Column If We Can Use Cellphones on Planes, the Jets Can Make the Super Bowl Link: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303661404579179614285213506 Updated Nov. 5, 2013 8:57 p.m. ET This is another Jets Super Bowl column, the second Jets Super Bowl column in three weeks. The first time I wrote a Jets Super Bowl column, you all just laughed in my face. Now it's two weeks later, and…OK, you're all still laughing in my face. Look: I know it's ridiculous. Almost irresponsible. Probably never going to happen. The playoffs alone would be an accomplishment. First week of November, there's no need to get carried away with the idea of the New York Jets playing in a New York Super Bowl. (OK, "New York/New Jersey," right, whatever, got it.) But come on. Life twists in new and surprising directions. Dreams do come true. Consider this: You're about to be able to keep your phone powered up on an airplane. The FAA rules are being changed. Playing "Temple Run" while you're taxiing down the runway at LaGuardia—the zenith of the human traveling experience—will soon be completely legal. No more pleas to shut that dumb thing off. No pretending to shut that dumb thing off. No hiding a glowing iPhone in the SkyMall catalog. Nobody believes you're looking at solar-powered dog sweaters. New York Jets fans cheer before the game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Associated Press If phones on planes can finally happen, don't act like the Jets in the Super Bowl is an impossibility. And don't act like you've already ruled it out. You're not prepared to give up on the remote possibility. You're not ready to flee the city. You're not ready to cash in. Confess it now: You haven't already rented out your apartment for the weekend of Feb. 2. (Pro tip: You can still rent out a closet for $10,000 to Cowboy fans, who are the perfect combination: wealthy and optimistic.) But the Jets are not out of this. At all. Two weeks ago, when we last visited this hot topic, Rex Ryan and his strange green army were coming off a surprise home win over New England. On Sunday, the Jets pulled off another stunner, defeating the 6-1 New Orleans Saints in the Meadowlands. The Jets are now 5-4. Five and four! Before the season, the Jets were assumed to be cruising to 4-12. Two out of three in a three-game stretch versus New England, Cincinnati and New Orleans: If I told you in September that the Jets would have lost all three of those games, you would have nodded gently, as if I had told you brick-oven pizza tastes good. And they did not. I know I am leaving out the part where the Jets were pasted by the Bengals 49-9. That's the thing about the Jets. They're erratic. Look at their results so far: win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win. They win every other week. They are playing with a rookie quarterback, Geno Smith, who occasionally plays like the vision the Jets had for him, and occasionally plays like…like something else. The Jets can be pass/fail, maddening, confusing, but that might be good enough in 2013. If the season ended today they would make the playoffs. Playoffs! Sexy preseason picks such as the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans are already toast. The Giants are clinging by their fingernails, not technically out, hardly technically in. For the Jets, there is a road map. Five Super Bowl teams started the season 5-4, three of them in the past decade. The Jets will likely have to play their playoff games on the road. That blueprint exists, too. Most recently, the Super Bowl champion 2010 Green Bay Packers. Before them, the Super Bowl champion 2007 New York Football Giants. Is it reckless and goofy to say these things out loud? Goofy, certainly. But there's no runaway team in the NFL at the moment—Denver appears more vulnerable than it did a month ago, and it's getting colder, windier, less predictable. The 9-0 Kansas City Chiefs are the 9-0 Kansas City Chiefs—a stunning turnabout, but people still look at that team like it's a rental car about to run out of gas. Do the Seahawks and Colts look invincible to you? Two other contenders, New England and New Orleans, already have losses to your delicious Jets. I know I sound crazy. I know I appear unwell. But when we cooked up this Meadowlands Super Bowl, having the Jets and/or Giants in it was the fantasy. So somebody has to keep the daffy hope factory open, and that's me. Strange things happen. The Jets made the AFC championship with a rookie quarterback in 2009 and sprinted their way back to the conference-title game in 2010. A team of lobster-boat captains just won the World Series. The fantasy persists. A New York team in a New York Super Bowl (New York/New Jersey, OK, OK). It's not yet real. But not yet unreal. Write to Jason Gay at Jason.Gay@wsj.com
I agree it is never over till it is over so yes at this time a SB appearance is within the realm of possibility.
I predicted a Jets Superbowl in April and got laughed at, Theres no point spread for destiny and fate
Dont believe that they are going to win the Super Bowl at all but the more and more I read about them and watch them play I wish I had thrown money on them. I had been chastised for being their fan and people predicted 0 wins. I said just let the games play out.
The Jets can beat any team (and lose to) in the AFC except Denver. And nobody is going to a Super Bowl without going through Denver first. I think we can beat Cinci a 2nd time around now that they have some injury issues KC is a 6-3 team masquerading as 9-0. In a big spot Alex Smith will have trouble making plays.
Realistically we arent going to the super bowl much less win it. But im going to enjoy this season for all I can. I mean the jets have a chance to make the playoffs, and if they were to accomplish that, hey youre in the dance. From there, hey, you never know, bad weather, injuries, meteors, aliens... but seriously just enjoy this team, theyre exceeding expectations.
KC and Denver have not played yet but I would be more worried about the undefeated team than the Denver team that has already lost.
Obviously it's highly unlikely but it's not physically impossible. I think we'll focus on getting into the playoffs first, that's by no means a slam dunk.
I agree with Denver being a tough out. But, big but (which I like by the way) IF Dee Milli can improve and become half of what we thought he would be the Jets secondary will be much improved in the second half. We saw Dee play better vs NO and the buy can be huge. Also, getting Cro healthy will be huge during the bye as well. Kyle Wilson has been good in the slot and they have Walls and Lankster (who has played Welker) well in the past). Those three and Antonio Allen playing at their best would be a great matchup going against Denver's four wide receivers. Now add to that the Coples that came to play Sunday and I am getting moist just thinking about it. And like I said these are huge ifs but this defense has a chance to finish the season coming out of the buy as legendary.
Just keep rooting for the Chiefs. If the Jets were to get in as a 6 seed then they would have to travel to the 1 seed if anything were to happen. Chiefs look like a team would be the the typical 1 seed going home in the first round because they have turnovers.
The ideal situation to me is this: #1 Chiefs #2 New England #3 Colts #4 Bengals #5 Broncos #6 ???? The 6 seed road to the Super Bowl would be @Indy, @ Kansas City, then @ New England hopefully. This is the one situation where I would hope the Patriots win because to me there defense is vulnerable as hell. Going into Cincy will be difficult because they have the best defense in the AFC barring the Atkins injury impact. Going into Denver again would be extremely difficult because I think they will play with a different mindset after last years debacle. Long way to go though so most of this talk is null.
