Coples had a great game Might be the MVP of the win over the Saints. The stats dont show it but he played up to it.
Now we just need "Q" to start making a few more splash plays ... and his awakening will make one play in particular better. Pace is on "pace" to have his best year rushing the passer for the Jets. And that is simply because defenses have so many other players to worry about. With Q coming on .. Pace will never see a double team again.
could it be that a big man that had to essentially sit on his ass for a month wih a broken ankle is finally getting his conditioning back?
:rofl::rofl: If Coples can start getting some consistency, him and Wilkerson my God. Coples is one of my favorite players on this team (UNC homer) Could you imagine, for the next decade, 2 10 sack a season guys? Hell it's been forever since we had one!
bumping this rather than make a new thread coples was solid today. i feel like i see him in the backfield more often then not. i know everyone hates that we took 3 dlineman in a row but they are all looking like good to great picks
Coples has been solid 3 weeks in a row. The ankle injury and the new position def slowed his progression Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
yeah coples is sortof like an unsung hero, he really does an awesome job but doesn't has flashy numbers. i hope we can keep him here for awhiel
Coples had a lot of knocks on him coming out of the draft, and not every player is going to be an obvious stud in their first season. He has been off the radar of the media since then, but he is playing very well in the second half of this year. He has been in the backfield in lots of plays both run stuffing and pass rushing. The play of Wilkerson, Richardson, and Harrison has been so outstanding that Coples is getting a lot of 1 on 1 looks (saw Wilkerson get triple-teamed at least twice today) and Coples is a difficult 1 on 1 for any tackle or guard, let alone some of the RB's he gets trying to block him. I'm really enjoying the development of our D-Linemen, and enjoying how our coaching staff made sure to get our best defensive players all on the field at the same time. Say what you want about Rex but I've always been a supporter. In this league you have to try new strategies if you don't want to get figured out and left behind. Rex knows how he wants to build his team, and over the past 3 years he has been doing just that. He has taken 3 D-linemen and 2 CB's in the first round, because he needs his CB's who can man cover while he moves his linemen, linebackers, and safeties all around to confuse the hell out of QB's. If you have 5 offensive linemen blocking for a pass play, and Harrison and Wilkerson require a double team on any average play, that leaves 1 lineman to block Richardson and Coples. You have to then add a RB or TE to the protection just to get 1 man for each rusher. Both Richardson and Coples are proving to be mismatches for 1 on 1 situations, so you either force chip blocks, additional blockers or are forced to get the ball out very very quickly. That is with every base defensive play against the pass, without even considering a blitz. Quick shout out to Milliner who had a great game today, and hopefully will be playing like that on a more consistent basis.
Coples had 2 sacks today and a batted down pass. He's starting to get comfortable in his role as the OLB. If we can get a guy through the draft opposite of him that will help the defense.
Hopefully Antwan Barnes can come back and be somewhat productive. He's not the youngest guy but he has at least couple more years left, probably more. He looked pretty good before he went down too.
What I'm hoping for is for the Jets to draft an OLB in round 2, then have Barnes in Pace's role, with the rookie in Barnes role from this year.
He's now becoming the player people were looking for when he was drafted. Playing out of his natural position, constantly laying out the QB right as he throws and finally got another sack to show for it today. Not sure if he'll turn out to be better than Wilkerson as Mo was quoted as saying last year but it looks like Coples might give him a run for his money after all despite turning into a superstar. Definitely a testament to why 1st and 2nd round picks deserve some time before taking heavy criticism.
