What exactly limits him to a "number 2"? He has as much talent if not more talent than the vast majority of "number 1" TEs in the league. Aside from Vernon Davis, I can't think of too many "number 1" TEs that can beat Cumby in a foot race. Side note: I picked him up on FF 3 weeks ago; he's been a whole lot better than my "number 1" TE, Jared Cook.
Cumberland needs to be more consistent, technically he should be our 3rd option on this offense after Hill and Kerley.
Same except I picked up Heath Miller and Garrett Graham. Cook is better talent but hes stuck with Shittenheimer as his OC. "Hey look this guy had a monster performance week one, lets not target him again for the rest of the season, brilliant"!
That's all it is; opportunities. He has 11 receptions on 13 targets and he is the best blocker we have at the position. That's as "consistent" as it gets.
He needs more targets, which means he needs to do a better job of getting open. That's what I mean by consistency. Hopefully the increased reps will showcase his skills.
He's definitely got a ton of potential. He's a tough matchup for opposing defenses. Hopefully he can continue to improve and be a consistent weapon for Geno to use. I like what i've seen from him this year. He seems to fit Marty's system well.
We've all seen him make some big plays for this team. That's potential. Nobody said he's great but you have to be able to see the potential he has. He's made some nice plays for us early on. 18 yards a catch is pretty solid as well.
Some people just can't let go of the past. St. Louis is ranked 15th for points per game. I wouldn't say their roster would lead you to expect a higher number, either. Jus sayin...
He blocks a lot more often than he gets credit for. If he's staying in to block, then he can't run routes, and consequently can't catch passes. So no, it's not entirely his fault that he's not getting the catches, and honestly, if he weren't blocking on some of those plays, it wouldn't matter anyway because they might have a free rusher at the QB. You can't just rely on the numbers.
Exactly, per reports he had a talk with MM a few weeks ago about his role and ever since the they have featured him more and he's delivered. It has nothing to do with him not getting open. BTW even if he wasn't staying in the block most of the time, that thought process would still be warped as it would imply that the only reason someone does not get the ball is because they are not open as though Geno always finds the open man.
Cumberland was Windslow's bitch in 2 TE sets. Guess who go to stay in and block? Jeff's 'breakout game' against the Falcons catching the excellent seam rout for 7 turned head withing the org. Even Kellon whined about not getting targeted enough after htat game. After Cumberland came out of Marty's office after a friendly sit down Marty agree he needed to start using Jeffery in a more productive way. Now that Windslow has exited stage left for a few games we should have plenty of first team reps to watch.
Misleading stat. They put up 30 + on Jax and then were the beneficiaries of a Houston pick six fueled implosion. Have you watched their games? They have this strange problem of not being able to score in the first quarter. Infuriating play calling and mis/non-use of personnel. Go head over to a Rams board read what they have to say about their OC.
