I know there is an official Geno thread, but I thought this would make an interesting enough thread on it's own. I know everyone is super high on Geno right now after that awesome performance he put on against the ATL, and it is well deserved. Our rookie played like a 7 year vet that night. And I was actually high on him before that. He has shown a maturity and level of coolness that is impressive, and his skillset cannot be denied at this point.

But the fact remains he IS a rookie, and that game against the ATL may very well end up being his best game all season. In the words of Primus, "They can't all be zingers". He will still make mistakes, some of them bad one's that may cost us a game. He will still have bad games overall this season. I am not ripping on him at all. I love this kid, and I believe that the J-E-T-S knocked it out of the park when they drafted him. I am simply cautioning the "chronic flip-floppers" of this site to not jump ship on him because he doesn't replicate last Monday nights magic week after week. That night he showed us a glimpse of what the future holds for us, and for him. When he does have another bad game, and he absolutely will, don't jump back on the "bust" bandwagon JetsFan seems intent on driving around this site. Get behind him and support him, even through the rookie mistakes. He IS our future at QB, I can see that, and I hope many of you can as well. As fans, we need to rally behind him during the rough ones as well as the good ones, up to the point where we can see he isn't gonna work out, which is a time I don't expect we'll ever see.

He is a rookie, and he will BE a rookie. But keep this love for him alive and rally behind him when he shows his rookieness.

I think that's what we all expect. You come in knowing a rookie will be up and down with good moments and bad moments. What you hope for is that they start to be more consistent as the game starts slowing down and they get more comfortable.

Along with mistakes and errors, we've seen accuracy, poise, confidence, leadership, calmness, and a guy who isn't phased by media scrutiny. I see no reason why he can't be the franchise QB this team has needed.

Two of the worst rookies of all time were Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman...why would anybody expect Smith to be perfect.

Patience is what we all need. I'd just like to know at the end of the year that we have a good QB. Next offseason can be devoted to getting players around him.

Tom Brady has had a couple of downs this season, Big Ben has had four,Josh Freeman played himself out of a starting job, Matt Schaub is on the verge of joining him, Eli Manning has become a TO machine and Christian Ponder is all but gone in Minnesota but, no I expect our rookie to have a 158 QBR for every game for his entire remaining NFL career...

He wont keep the performance of Atlanta trough the season we are aware of that, but i really hope its more often that we got to see that kind of gameplay from him :p

As long as we don't see an ATL type performance followed by 2-3 games of 3 INT's and/or 2-3 fumbles, I'm good.

I totally agree with you. PLUS the team around him needs some tweaking with the WINSLOW situation.

But this kid brings hope to the franchise. His big arm is quite capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. The ice water in his veins and poise under fire are not something that can be taught! Either a man has it or he doesn't. All the greats have it!

Geno requires time to develop but the tools are there. He actually brought out the best in Cumberland last week. That is what a great QB is supposed to do! Elevate the play of the surrounding cast! Again, I am not saying he is a great QB. I am saying I think he will soon be on the road to greatness! There will be bumps along the way but every great one has had growing pains! Look up the Mannings ( Eli and his bro) rookie seasons.

It is people with an agenda( mainly Sanchez fans) who REQUIRE Geno to be perfect or become second string immediately! They refuse to allow him to make rookie mistakes and grow into the position. They refuse to acknowledge that he has many tangible and intangible skills that are evident and could make him into a franchise QB.

    GO JETS! GO GENO!

First, Geno only had a so-so game Monday night. His biggest accomplishment was not turning the ball over, but that should be the 'minimum' standard of any QB. Outside of that, he didn't set the place on fire. Yes, he was efficient and took his shots when they were there, ie 3 TD passes.

His final drive showed his maturity, which was nice to see. With Atlanta guarding the sidelines the middle of the field was soft. Basically, Geno saw what the defense was giving him and took it....he let the game come to him versus trying to throw deep into dbl coverage down the sidelines. He was patient, recognized the time he to work with and kept himself contained.

I see no reason why Geno can't play to these standards the rest of the year.

Good post, we all get caught into the hype of what Geno does game to game. After Tennessee it was "at what point should we consider Simms". After ATL it was "so how many years is Geno starting for us".

What I would like to see is another low turnover or no turnover performance. Geno bouncing back from a terrible TEN game and responding with a clean game in ATL was great, now let's see if he can string together two good games for us. It's still and I won't be surprised if he struggles again, but it's putting together good to great games consistently that separates the different levels or tiers we use when we rank QBs.

I don't care how many INTs he has as long as we win the games we are supposed to win..like this one coming up.

Turnovers are key for me... If he can get those down to 1 a game TOPS (preferably none), I will be more than satisfied.. I have a good feeling that this kid is going to be our QB for the next 10+ years, I just hope the Jets go out this offseason and get him some serious weapons to work with.

I love what i'm seeing with Geno at this point. The kid looks poised and seems very coachable, intent on working to correct the flaws in his game.
While it's hard to temper your enthusiasm with games like he had against the Falcons it would be a mistake to think they'll be no more games like the Titans.
Looking at the big picture, we'll have decent cap space next season to improve the offense and we should have a bright future ahead with this kid under center.

You haven't been around this board long enough, I guess. Things turn on a dime around here with a lot of people. HOF bound one week, total bust the next. That is all I am cautioning against.

Nice post as always Tony. But expecting this board to be anything but bipolar is asking to much from the internet generation and from the Sanchez psychopaths. There are far to many here people hoping Geno fails simply because they are still trying to justify their love of Sanchez and years of misguided posts. It is almost impossible to have discussions with such people. But it goes further than that. The internet generation has no attention span, limited analytical skills, unable to frame arguments and generally only deals and black and white and struggles with anything that goes beyond their polarized view of the world. Evey year the board simply gets worse.

When the Jets win all is right with the world but when we lose its time to cut the entire team and fire the FO and CS. There is no such thing as patience, objectivity, thought, logic or calmness left in this internet world. Everything is emotion driven, seeking drama, driven by ego with the only goal being to prove the poster was right about whatever simple minded crusade they are on today. Most all thought and discussion is drowned out in the emotion of the loss or win. Come Sunday evening it will again be either time to start Simms and prapre for the drafting of a new QB or it will be time to buy SB tickets every year for the next decade.

BINGO! I totally agree with you. The turnovers make the SANCHEZ hero worshipers salivate. They throw the spotlight on them so they can build a case for their hero. BS. Winning is what is important. GENO throws the ball so darn far down the field that if its picked off its as good as a punt! He has not thrown INTS to an on rushing defensive lineman! He is not also a proponent of being a checkdown charlie like a prior Jets QB was. He goes out full throttle to win games. Turnovers may occur but in time with experience, he will be just fine.

Why does geno have to fail for us to be right about sanchez? Ive been nothing but a geno supporter, he still needs work on his footwork but his talent level and poise are clearly something to build on and it looks like hes going to have a pretty good career here with the jets.

But dont think for one second martys system isnt a big part of it as well

    Great post Tony. 100% agree.

That said I am expecting Geno to have some yips against the Steelers, who will put relentless pressure against him and have Troy Polamalu lurking in the secondary to make mistakes look particularly bad.

I'll be thrilled if this doesn't happen but I could see an ugly stat line coming out of tomorrow's game.

You know that the Steelers 0 Int's and 4 sacks on the season either means they are a toasty dead last train wreck or that they used the bye to turn that around. I'm betting it is the latter.

I just hope he learns from his good games as much as he learns from the really bad ones.
