Nelson's actually better than most of the goofball hold-the-fort WR signings we've had lately (like Gates for one).

Really? How many 5th rounders even make rosters after a couple years? This is a ridiculous statement. Holmes has won games for us. He's a Super Bowl MVP WR. Long shot for a 5th rounder to contribute at that level. Two reasons why Holmes has not produced huge consistent numbers for us: 1) He's injury prone. 2) We've had shitty QB's throwing to him and before this year crappy offensive coordinators.

Granted its time to part ways with Holmes after this season if we can. He's just too injury prone for the amount of money we're paying him. If he can't stay on the field we have to move on.

He couldnt crack a line up because he tore a ligament in his knee last year week 1 and hasnt been healthy since. As far as Idzik is concerned someone needs to check his pulse.Someone needs to wipe the cobwebs off the door to the GM office at florham park and make sure this guy is breathing

You gotta understand where most Jets fans are coming from to get a post like that .Me included most off us have ran out of pateince a buttfumble ago.The WR situation had been horible for 3 seasons now and people are just sick of it.We had 7 rounds to draft one WR we drafted zero.We had money to sign 1 midlevel guy we signed zero. Its getting old fast

You do realize the JETS traded 2 draft picks + Chansi Stuckey for Edwards.......?

either way, I think this is a good pickup. If his knee is OK, he's already better than Gates.

That's the way the Jets develop talent....."one n done" for Spadola . Rex loved this guy but gutless to let him work out rookie kinks like Gino. How conservative can you get???

I don't think the signing is meaningless. It could prevent us from needing to put Gates out there, so that's important. Obviously he's a fringe NFL player, if he was considered decent/average he'd be on a team already - but the Jets don't have a deep WR corps and there aren't any great, healthy, available WRs on the market mid-season.

"Trader Mike" unquestionably made some great draft choices (i.e. Revis, Wilkerson, and many others), and some good trades. He also made some catastrophic blunders: he traded for Tim Tebow; he gave Mark Sanchez a huge extension, fully guaranteed with no offsets; and he traded away many of the Jets' picks.

It's too soon to judge Idzik as a GM, because it takes about 3 full seasons to get a good sense of how a draft class was. So maybe 4 years so you can evaluate 2 draft classes. He also had very little cap space to work with because he started out over the salary cap, and this depleted roster has many weak areas, making it impossible to adequately address everything in 2013.

We lost Revis in 2013, but we would have lost him through free agency whenever his contract expired. He was not gonna re-sign or take an extension for less than $16m a season. That's too much cap space for one CB, because then you don't have enough money to sign other critical guys. As for "don't take a 1st round CB because he will be compared to Revis" - ultimately you can't let Mike Francesca / whoever else's blatherings affect your draft selections.

Wow. Do you realize that Rex is coaching for his job? Yea, if the fans had any sense they would acknowledge this as a building year and be more patient, but they are not, and they will call for Rex's head and ask why they are keeping this jag in and not sign somebody else. Rex is damned if he does damned if he doesn't. New York is by far the most ridiculous place to coach or play.

I agree. If Mike learns his lessons he has a chance to build a nice team somewhere else.

From his prior body of work, this is a good signing & a real possible upgrade to WR position. This guy has good hands & good speed. If his health is ok, he is an instant starter. He should stick around for a long time. He has execellent hands & size. Worse case scenerio...he is teams 4th or 5th WR & with his skill set...thats a luzury.

Next thing is bring back Braylon & cut fuking Gates. He's terrible.

You need to under stand that drafting for need over value is shortsighted. Also with the way the cap works having the dollars to both have in season cusion and to roll over into next year is more important that a mid level JAG receiver. Idzik avoided the quick fix. He brought in low level guys to fill holes and drafted for the future as well as the present. It takes more than one offseason to fix a roster that lacked depth and had cap issues. If it's getting old, maybe being a sports fan is just not for you.

I am by far not a troll. I feel what a lot of jet fans feel. Why draft geno and not sign/trade someone who can at least catch the ball. Just saying Izdik did not do much and did not briover anyone except obmabu who was a seattle practice squad WR for like 5 years. Their are GM's that find hidden gems when cap strapped. The book is still out on Izzy.

We have almost the same team as last year except geno is starting and we promoted/lost a couple defense players. Most notably we added barnes and lost scott, revis, landry, and bryan thomas. We also added 2 more threw the draft. That is 3 players that are "new starters" on D. Dee was a risky choice picking that high and he is expected to come in and replace revis. The fins signed grimes from ATL and did not pay much.
It just seems like izdik is just getting by and does not want any part of this season cause he wants to hire his own coach and rebuild threw the draft. When your D is playing top 10 and you can get some O talent threw trading late round picks. I for one believe in it.

Easy to say when you have money to play with. Idzik inherited a team depleted of talent everywhere and the worst cap space we've had in a long time. Yet you're gonna sit here and say you don't like what he did bringing in guys that didn't pan out? You say GMs usually find a gem, but that's bullshit. If that were true, they wouldn't be called gems. There would be a group of talented guys just sitting there waiting to be signed by teams. You fail nine times out of ten signing cheap free agents. He hasn't even been doing this a year yet

I may get burned for this but Tanny was right in trading for Holmes and Braylon. The reason was we were Super bowl contenders and one or two pieces may have put us over the top. I applaud Tanny for what he built while he was winning. He is a good GM for a WINNING team as he is not afraid to pull the trigger on the big move. Did it put us in cap hell yes, but we would be singing a much different tune if we won maybe one more game in 2009 and 2010. I liked Tanny during the Mangini era and the beginging of the Rex era. But the mistake he made was that he kept going for the big name aquisitions during a losing time such as Plax and Tebow. Tanny was a good GM for the time he served he just didnt know it was time to start over instead of holding on to the pieces of the past that were over priced. Hence he lost his job and in comes Idzik.
Strapped for cash with a team in need of some serious depth. He doesnt blow the wad his first year and does the right thing, building depth for future. Did he get any superstars no (maybe Richardson and me or anybody for that matter should not give up on Dee quite yet), but he had a solid draft and and had to go cheap by aquiring injury prone players that had talent (Ivory, and Barnes come to mind). So the question is do they go out and make a trade for a troubled yet talented player on the fringe with his current organization? (Kenny Brit anyone) And the answer is no (unless we get him for a 6th or something) We are not in winning mode, like Tanny was when he was making trades left and right, and we are certainly not the Colts (doing what they did for Richardson.) If we were one or two players away from putting us over the top I'd say WTF are you waiting for, but we are not. This is a year about building depth and hoping to find some young players worth while. Lets see what we have in guys like Spadola, before we start dipping into our CAP money.

This is what izdik had to entertain as depth at WR this past offseason. Forget guys like wallace, bowe or jennings. Here is what out there as far as affordable free agents and a few that were draftable.

Draft steals or guys that we could have drafted

3rd round and up : Terrance williams 6'2 208 picked 3 slots after winters.
SD pick 76 keenen allen 6'2 206 5 picks after winters.
kenny stills got drafted 2 slots AFTER oday obushi.
Texas a&m WR ryan swope was drafted in the 5th round. We picked william campell a couple picks later.

Guy's we could have signed to 1 year deals.

All better than our current WR's or backups. Holmes wasn't even looking at playing this year. So with just Hill and Kerley with no good TE's ( Izdik signed winslow last minute). What is he thinking about as far as competing with no weapons ?? Now we got nelson and supposed to jump for joy? We should try and get better if that is our true only weakness .

We had Holmes signed to contract, Hill a second round pick who was raw, and Kerley a proven entity. We had to address both safety positions, Outside Linebacker twice, and no Guards to speak of. With that many holes and strapped for that much cash you roll the dice with what you have. Three NFL starters, and replace the bigger needs first. It was the right move.
