Tough one. Can only hope that Geno will build on the good things that he did, learn from the mistakes, and get better in a way that Sanchez never did.
Offense: Yes, our running game was clicking in big part because MM refused to give up on the passing game which prevented NE from stacking the line. Marty forced the NE run defense to play honest the whole game. Geno made about 5 really impressive passes (several were dropped, Hills fumbling after the catch and even Spadola dropped a would be bullet over the middle for 20 yards). Add the perfect pass to Gains for 7 and yes, a good pass here, there, or anywhere throughout the game brings home the bacon. I honestly believe had we had Kerley we convert just enough plays to at least tie at the end and probably win in OT if not outright. Defense: Best game called in 5 years. Even without Couples terrorizing the line Rex held Brady to 3-20 first downs and 10 points playing at home (I don't count the FG off our gift turnover on our own 5 yard line that the Pats could not punch it in). Our defense completely shut down the Pats running game and even gave them negative yardage on 3 different 3 and out series. Both teams are missing players and are loaded with young, unproven players. Our defense negated Brady as much as their defense negated Geno. If we played this game 10 times, Jets win 5 of them. And we're only going to be getting better as the season rolls on. I'm not happy with the loss, but I'm happy to see our defense shut brady down hard.
My thoughts are I just watched two pretty crappy football teams battle down to the wire. The Pats and the Jets have to rebuild. The Jets may actually be ahead in the rebuild although the Pats have as many good young players on D as we do. If Kerley wasn't hurt we might have won this game. On the other hand if Gronk plays for the Pats we probably lose by 17.
I am pretty objective being a BIlls fan. I thought Geno started well. He played better when he was more cautious IMO. The Jets were running the ball pretty well in the first half. When it started raining the Jets play calling inexplicably turned to spread offense and mostly passing. He seemed to get "more comfortable" and starting making mistakes. If I were the Jets, I would bring him along more slowly and a play a run oriented game that better fits the Jets persona. Tonight, I am not sure why the Jets did not stick with the run. All in, he is a rookie and playing in NY. You have to be patient, he showed some enough so far that I think you have reason for hope.
No, Laxin, I think you are spot on...to be honest I think this is the worst collaborative WR play I've seen in a football game in my entire life. That includes the Patriots players as well. This had to be some sort of record for "drops in a game." I think the Jets WR's need to make sure they take Geno out to dinner and get laid or something because the disservice they just did to this kid was staggering. Geno was playing a pretty good game until the 4th qtr. and I firmly believe that the ending was from frustration and him pressing to make a play. If I'm Idzik I am absolutely cutting Clyde Gates and bringing in a veteran who can produce. We have other young receivers that we can work with and "groom." Gates should not be having this kind of horrible production...he's not a rookie.
Bad loss overall... Geno holds the ball way too long, and leads his recievers in position to get drilled. He did the same thing in week 1 getting a few guys drilled. If he is in shotgun its pass and under center its a run= He is not ready to run this offense! Finally if you think our receivers sucked tonight, what did you think of them last year??? Scary thing is Gates and Hill have improved from last year. The oline played well, rbs played good, defense was pretty good except the td pass. REFS were hideous! How you call a late hit on Mangold when the bunghole was dancing on the sideline, and a 300 lb man is in air??? Then to top it off 2 ejections for us and nothing for them? I smell BS. The NFL cant be serious with this... Yes Sanchez has playd well against the Pats, unless you are a Espn fan Aka- the butt fumble is so hilarious, Steve Montana never did that!!
Ok, I get what you're saying now. (Before you made it sound like if they benched Geno, Sanchez would play) One thing to remember though is, when Sanchez was around it was Rex's first year, if Sanchez went out and bombed, Rex wasn't going to get fired..... However, this year Rex's job is not as secure as it was in '09. If Geno continues to make mistakes in week 5 or week 6 (which can be expected of Rookie of course) Rex may have to pull Geno and give Simms a chance, as a last ditch effort to save his butt. Geno needs time, as most rookie QB's do, but Rex doesn't have time though. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Jets bench him if he has a few more games like this.
Agreed on Clyde Gates. Id give anything right now for the Jets to have traded for Anquan Boldin. Oday fucking Aboushi could have been Anquan Boldin. One thing I noticed, but was was Ryan Spadola not wearing gloves? You do not have to channel your inner Wayne Chrebet when its down pouring and the other WRs can catch for shit. Our TE's werent utilized at all. Holmes looks like he's running at 75%. Hill still cant make a hands catch. Clyde Gates is like that kid from "The Little Giants" that can run but cant catch for shit. Ivory was MIA for the 2nd half. No WR screens. Just an all around horrible job supporting a rookie. If you ask me 2 weeks ago if I would be happy with a 1-1 start, only losing by 3 to the Pats- Id be all for it. But this one hurts. Geno had his ups and downs. I think anyone who didnt watch the game will look at it and think he sucked instantly. He had some great throws. But he also had some poor throws. Im not sure who they can bring in, but this team needs someone who can catch.
1) Nobody got drilled today. He does hold onto the ball too long, but he always looks to throw which is good. 2)He did get a few guys drilled, but funny how when theo the team doesn't have headhunter, nobody gets drilled. 3)We ran multiple draws/delays out of shotgun, including ones to our FB. 4)The played bad last year too. But Geno is a rookie, Sanchez wasn;t. Geno isn't making bad decision overall like Sanchez was and even if he was, he's a rookie in his second game. 5) Agreed, Props to Vlad. 6) Disagree. mangold was late, Brick throw punches, never saw what colon did. They made mistakes., Mangold gets fined Brick/Colon probably get suspended. 7)Sanchez has also played terrible. Any pretending to know which Sanchez we get today is lying to themselves.
yeah its kinda the dynamic between Rex's job security vs the long term success of the Jets Rex has to do whats best for his job while benching Geno could kill his confidence and ruin him long term especially if Mark doesn't do well yet still gets to play I say let him play he's doing some good things but his anticipation if off, his timing is off and he's just not reading the field well 10 days before the next game should help him I'm hoping
They sure as hell didnt look improved in THIS game. Thats all that matters. He holds the ball for a tad long, but every time they showed a view of the entire field, every WR was covered. No one was getting open at all. Hill still sucks at route running and Holmes is only at 3/4 speed.
Bingo. I am most certainly not calling for Geno's head after tonight. He failed in some spots tonight, but he did play well enough to win in others. Already through two weeks I've seen him throw the ball away, tuck and run with the ball, and have pocket awareness to go down/hold onto the ball... all better and more reoccurring than Sanchez generally ever did.
WR play was pathetic. Hill and Gates should both be ashamed of themselves. Marty should be ashamed for calling a ton of passing plays in pouring fucking rain. Ivory was doing great...but no, can't have that. You don't shut out the Patriots in the second half and lose. Had we turned the ball over one less time, we win or tie that game. Glad we have 11 days to whip these guys into shape for Buffalo. Need to win that one.
How are you judging their improvement? Hill was still dropping passes all training camp and in preseason games + fumbles in the preseason too. I dont think there is any defense for Gates. The guy shouldnt even drop that many for 16 games...
