I wanted to open up a thread that brings all this QB talk to one spot. Mods, feel free to merge all the individual ones into here. One thing I want to get out there is about the different levels of experience in Marty's WCO as far as our QB's go. There is none. All four have had the playbook for about the same amount of time give or take a week here or there depending upon when they were picked up by the Jets. All we really have in differences is level of experience and against what level of competition. Let's break some things down shall we: 1. The obvious is our 5th year starter...but Sanchez is hurt...that's the only reason we're having this discussion. 2. With roughly 4 quarters of experience...2 of those against Giants starters, Geno, unless proven different in the Eagles game is simply NOT ready for prime time. He had VERY happy feet, poor mechanics, bad decision making and he simply never looked comfortable and like he didn't want to be out there...at all. Happy Feet, bad decisions...those are rookie mistakes and will be cleared up over time. I take ZERO excuses for bad mechanics and not planting his feet before he throws. He is a 2nd round pick in the NFL and these are things we should not be discussing. His mechanics are that of a 5th round pick for developmental purposes. I do not see the "it" factor from him that I was expecting to see last night. 3. McElroy has 2 years in the league and one game of experience. He has the mental capacity for the WCO and his arm is plenty good enough for the offense. In fact some would say he is the prototypical WC QB. Having said that, some would say that his arm is not strong enough for anything other than the mid-range to underneath stuff and has no ability to stretch the field. Debatable if he has the "it" factor. Also, isn't his ankle a bit tweaked as well? 4. With just over 2 quarters of play against mostly bubble players, Simms has shown an "it" quality and some hard core leadership traits as well. He has a gun for an arm and appeared to be able to execute the offense...albeit not playing against top competition. And, due to timing, even if he were to start next week's game he is NOT going to get that situation of #1's because the Eagle's will probably play theirs one snap or two and then sit them...if they play at all. He has just as much time as GeeSmith in the offense yet looks comfortable, poised and his mechanics are not all over the place. He plants when he has time to wind up and when not he throws cross body darts for 70 yds. I had to say that because we have to go with his body of work that we know. He is no more unknown than Geno is and Geno's two quarters more of work are in the same game so we have a decent comparison. I also want to smash any argument(s) of college experience between the three young guys. I don't care who won national championships and who went 6-7 as a starter at a degrading program...I don't care about those stats. The minute they were drafted or signed all that was gone...just like a new season. They are all 0-1 (Gmac with the one loss last year). Now, to throw fuel on the fire, I read that they are going to attempt to bring in Matt Leinert and John Beck. My personal take........ The ONLY way I'm bringing on Leinert or Beck....or any other QB that is not on our roster, is if Sanchez is done for the year. Not 6 games...the year. Those two have already proven that they can't win in this league and would be nothing more than a warm body. We have those on our roster. The starting QB for the New York Jets is on our roster. Whether it be Geno, Greg or Matt. Geno and Matt being identical in "newness." If you want to go based solely on experience you are forced to start Greg. If you are going to solely based upon draft position (the worst criteria on the planet) then you have to start Geno. Personally, I would like to go on what I've seen. As I stated earlier...I don't care about national championships, college records...etc...etc...I care about what I've seen on the field. Geno is NOT ready. Simms looks more ready than Geno and they have the same time on the Jets, in the league and the offense. I don't care what level of competition, in the same game, they played against. Simms mechanics were mostly sound, Geno's were not. Simms looked confident...Geno did not. Simms looked decisive...Geno did not. I'll take an interception from a rookie if it was a decisive move and the wrong one...at least he made a decision. Two of Geno's picks were all over the map and I was "lord, where was he going with that ball?" Simms, in my mind, has the "it" factor and looks more ready than Geno....from a rookie QB perspective. The only real knock against Greg is his physical ability as compared to the other two. Before I see anymore crap about give Geno time...etc...etc...the SAME can be said for Simms! The draft is an inexact science as is proven year in and year out. You go with what you see on the field! I'm all for giving Geno time...to practice and get his head right and his mechanics fixed...then we'll talk. I'm not saying get rid of anyone...we all know that it takes time. Let me say this clearly too...one thing I do NOT condone is bringing in Leinart or Beck. Neither is any good and only undermines/destroys trust in the QB's you have on your roster. if we were down to ONE healthy QB then maybe...but we have THREE healthy QB's, depending upon Gmac's wheel, and if you can't pick a starter from the lot then why in the hell are they on the roster. Let the debate begin!!!!
Sims is the best looking QB on your roster. The last drive in OT looked better than all the others this preseason.
You saying Simms is more ready than Geno is ridiculous. Simms was playing against kids that will be working at Subway next week. If he played against first team D, his piss poor accuracy would be exposed.
not worried about it. if sanchez got dinged he will either be ready to play or he will not be. if not, its an opportunity for Geno or Sims or GMac. Sanchez was not exactly lighting the world on fire w/his performance thus far in the pre season.
Start simms next week, why not, supposedly its a competition, he played well, for the time he was in, got a good arm.
Why do people waste their time arguing this. Idzik and Ryan will decide who the QB will be and just let it play out.
Why? You saying doesn't change what we ALL saw? Exactly WHY do you say what you say? Explain yourself.
Because it's fun and interesting...at least I find it so. If you do not why bother writing in the thread at all?
Not sure why everyone is so stoked on Simms, hes been facing 3rd stringers. Probably Brett Ratliff 2.0.
Because Idzik and Ryan are focused on Sanchez and Smith. Rex Ryan said that the QB competition is an "equal" competition...without Simms or McElroy. As much as I'd love to see McElroy or even Simms start, it's not happening with Rex as coach. And he sure as hell would rather get fired than name McElroy as the starting QB.
It really doesn't matter what level the player is that is chasing you, you either make a play or you don't. Simms made good plays in a couple of games, he's worth looking at against better players. Although I didn't think Geno was that bad other than the picks. (I know, hard to over look)
I dont even know what this post means. I was crystal clear. You cant say Simms is more NFL ready because he had a TD pass against a 3rd team defense when Geno played against 1st team.
so in other words nobody should be allowed to write in a thread unless they find the topic to be "fun and interesting"? Don's comments are perfectly valid regardless of whether you think they are "fun and interesting".
If Sanchez isn't healthy then Geno is the starting QB. Simms was doing it against 3rd stringers and he's only fighting for a backup job.
Simms should be the very last option to start imo. If Geno doesn't show slight improvement in the Eagles game, then you go with McElroy. If Greg can't play then Simms should start.
Mezz, I get that its fun and interesting. And its certainly a "valid" thread. BUt am I the only one who cant stomach another thread QB related? Maybe cuz Im so fuckin pessimistic after seeing what Ive seen, but Id rather talk about anything but QBs right now
you know your quarterback situation is terrible when people are getting excited over matt simms. like these coaches see him every damn day in practice, he just clearly isn't good enough
I htought we were going to surprise some people this year. Aint happenin. Unless people are surprised that we win 4 games instead of 2-3
Bringing in Leinert or Beck is a joke, which means with Rex as HC its quite possible. Neither know our offense or the players they would be working with. Plus if they were any good at all, they would be on a roster somewhere. McElroy has been out with an injury, and unless both he and Sanchez are hurt and can't play in the near future (say couple weeks) I can't imagine why you would bring a new guy in for just a week. Some teams will go into the season with just two active QBs and even if you don't like it, Simms and Smith would be two. Simms should start next week and hell if he does good, which I mean 60% completions and a couple scores, give a shot week one. It would excite the fans, which is more than Smith does. The headlines would be fantastic and our new GM would get the credit for pulling the trigger just like his team did last year in Seattle. Can see it in the paper now, "A Simms starting at QB in NY again."
I know you can't compare college to NFL, but... Mark Sanchez NFL Career 55.1% comp pct 6.5 yds per attempt 68 pass TD, 69 Int Matt Simms College Career 54.5% comp pct 6.9 yds per attempt 8 pass TD, 8 Int
