The one second stringer in college that I can think of who has actually played a lot at the NFL level recently is Matt Cassel.

He was drafted by the Patriots to help them cheat (be the signal guy in the cheating system) but actually got a chance to play when Brady got hurt. The odds are pretty good that Tom Brady was drafted to be the signal guy also but then the Pats liked what they saw of him on the field and Bledsoe got hurt.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out after the media monsoon this week.

Personally, I think he deserves a further look. Just in case.

There's an awful lot of BASEBALL in your statement there. Baseball...the biggest "individual" team sport there is.

I've watched PLENTY of Heisman QB's get drafted high and stuff...don't give me that. Be HONEST with what you are typing. Since 2000:

2000 Chris Weinke - Out of the league
2001 Eric Crouch - Out of the league
    2002 Carson Palmer
2003 Jason White - Out of the league
    2004 Matt Leinart - Backup
2006 Troy Smith - Out of the league
2007 Tim Tebow - Will be out of the league/backup
    2008 Sam Bradford
    2010 Cam Newton
    2011 Robert Griffin III
    2012 Johnny Manziel

Other than Manziel who is a year or two away from the draft, 50% of those QB's, who won the Heisman, are not even IN the league...or are clinging to a backup job. ALL of them were drafted I believe...too tired to go look...maybe Troy Smith wasn't...but the others were..and HIGH.

NO sir, with the way injuries are today...even your 3rd QB needs to be able to play somewhat.

If Sanchez is healthy and is the starter, I'd play Smith a half to give him the reps, and Simms the second half to get some reps. Sanchez wouldn't need to play.

If Sanchez is injured, well, you kinda want Smith to start vs. the Eagles just to get more reps, even though you could see him playing 1 quarter and Simms the final 3 to get some time, saving Smith because you don't want HIM injured too.

If Sanchez is healthy and they really are taking the competition into the final pre-season game (well, God help us), but you figure in that situation Mark gets like 2 drives (1 quarter max), Smith gets like 2 drives (1 quarter), and Simms still gets the entire second half.

Either way, I think we'll see Simms a lot next week- and we should. He's earned that as the # 3 QB (with GMac out), in the final preseason game.

But, you can't read him playing a ton in pre-season game 4 as anything other than what usually happens in the final pre-season game. Plus, if he does play well, it'll be against second string/third string defenses, so let's not put the guy on a bus to Canton just because he smokes some guys that won't be in the NFL come September 1.

This kid has moxie. He is a tough smart Jersey kid, you can see the leadership on him. He has what Mark and Geno lack. Does that mean he could be a great QB? Not necessarily, but I would give him my third spot in a heartbeat and I would keep a close eye on him. I think he shows enough to be developmental prospect.

Yeah. THAT was horse-crap right there.

I mean even looking at the replay later on when they caught him doing a bit more with the hands(you know what I'm talking about), if THAT'S excessive celebration, then I'd rather he get his money's worth, turn toward the refs and give them a Stone-Cold Salute instead.

all true, but whether you prefer simms or mcelroy, the taco lovers will always use the trem "scrubs" to describe your guy.

those two are in the exact same position that guys like chrebet and victor cruz once were in before they got the chance to play/start.:)

didnt get a chance to catch the 2nd half

The big highlights for me were his 37 yard touchdown pass to Spadola late in the 4th quarter; and in overtime he was backed up against the Jets' end zone, one guy is chasing him through the end zone from the blind side, and he rolls out to his right and makes a 40 yard pass without setting his feet, and Spadola gets another 30 yards after the catch to take the Jets into field goal range.

Also Rex going with Matt Simms instead of trying a field goal on 2nd down.

i'm intrigued by simms but also irritated that mcelroy hasnt gotten a shot. maybe i'm just missing something - and i assume i am - but from what i saw, mcelroy seemed like a good q-b. better than sanchez and probably worth trying while geno develops. actually i'd like to see simms and mcelroy battle for the starters role and let geno watch and practice and learn. sanchez on the pup.

Only going to touch one comment here, Baseball is not the biggest individual team sport. That belongs to Basketball, no other sport can one player totally change the dynamics of a team.

The only thing I get from your avatar is that for a change it's not displaying a 12 year old girl in lingerie.

I'm not entirely sure but I think McElroy was inactive for the game due to some sort of small injury.

I saw a guy who was tentative. I like that he can get away while he is trying to decide. His arm is okay. Other than that, have to see a lot more. I do not want to see Sanchez. If he is better than Geno, he is not a lot better.

There's nothing wrong with rooting for Matt Simms or wanting a change at QB. The racial poke though seems a little unnecessary......before you reply " that's what Bart Scott called him" that is irrelevant. I'm sure you can find more appropriate, ORIGINAL, yet degrading nicknames for Mark SANCHEZ than this.

I just now saw both plays over on the official Jets homepage. I was real impressed with Simms's arm strength and demeanor. If they gave this kid a real shot, it would be a very interesting race to see who could be backing up whom. Like Mezz said, although both throws were late in the game, both throws were accurate with an extremely tight spiral which no doubt help the velocity as those balls cut thru the air like a laser beam.

If Geno stinks up the joint again thursday, I don't see how Ryan could not put Simms on the field against a higher calibre defense just to see what he has. At this point, the only thing Ryan has to lose is another preseason game.

I'm usually one of the guys that bash talk about a backup QB getting hype in the preseason, but we really don't have much for options at QB... and the throws I have seen Simms make in limited action were pretty impressive, whether or not they were against the threes or not.

That TD to Spadola popped my eyes out. If that LB in underneath coverage had managed to get his hand high enough, it would have taken his fingers off.

The cross body pass was another one, but even his short passes (that connected) have led the receiver to create YAC.

I'd rather see McElroni released and keep Simms, but I'm not deluded enough think Simms has a prayer of getting a shot this season unless both Geno and Sanchez are injured.
