Does it matter? Are you suggesting that he's got better options here at the moment? Seriously, how often is a QB not good enough to start at the college level and then any good at the professional level? Simms Senior season he completed 43%+ of his passes for 0 TD's and 3 Int's. What are the odds that he's got enough to be a good NFL QB? 100,000 to 1?
"seems to make smart reads"....this really sums up Mr Simms. With the OC's guidance & gameplanning, I believe Simms can carry-out a game plan & bring home some wins. And he has definitely passed McElroy on depth chart.
I expect Geno to maybe get an entire half on Thursday. If I were the coaches I wouldn't cut any of the QB's.
Simms is the new brett ratliff. lol. Seriously though . He is better than g mac in my opinion. And in college , We don't know what they asked of him to do? ala BB-
Brooks Bollinger looked pretty good in pre-season against scrubs too, back in the day, so let's not let our QB catastrophe get the better of us. Simms has looked good, but, let's slow down before we hand him the keys to the franchise. He's got a better gun than McElroy, I have no problem with him being the # 3 QB. Beyond that, he has not earned.
This is probably right. He looked very uncomfortable out there today. He also looked like problems in the 1st half became cumulative, like he was unable to get rid of the last mistake before he was back out on the field again. He did look like he got settled down at half time and came back out with a clearer head, which was a good sign. Then he had the safety in a high pressure situation which kind of sucked but I think is pretty random. He has a lot of kinks to work out and he probably is going to have to do it in games and the Jets are going to have to monitor him closely to see if he is improving and taking the next steps up or if he just doesn't have the right mix to be an NFL QB. It's unclear at this point where his ceiling is but I think we're seeing the floor. Note that his floor is about where Mark Sanchez floor is (still, 5 years in).
Watching Sanchez and Geno has me missing Pennington. Now, I'm not convinced QB is anymore valuable than any other position on offense. If you have a player, behind center, that can control the offense, protect the football, look off defenders and carry out a play action fake; than you are on to something. For us, just run the football. Build off of the running game 2009- TJ and Greene Success 2010- LT and Greene Success 2011- Greene and McNugget Stinks 2012- Greene, McNugget, Tebro, Powell Stinks We have to fix this backfield more than we have to fix QB position. Sanchez is done after this season (maybe before). Geno is serviceable, McElroy has a weak arm, but he is also serviceable and Simms might be serviceable as well (just haven't seen enough of him yet). Flame on. We need a feature running back not a feature Qb.
I would rate Sims as the second best QB on the team behind Sanchez, but not by much. Geno is not ready and if you look at my Avatar you can conclude I don't think he ever will be. Mac was so horrible when given the chance to start last year it was pathetic. Mac does not have a strong enough arm at the pro level. Sims has the arm and right now I would hand him the keys and let him start if Sanchez is indeed hurt. Our GM has seen this act before in Seattle when the underdog won the job, plus just starting Sims game one would grab every headline in New York. And isn't that what the jets like?
Yes. We are only discussion keeping an extra QB. And by the looks of sanchez getting pumbled, drilled, crushed or whatever . We gonna hold a 3rd roster spot and are rooting for him cause I never was a G mac fan. Ever. G mac looked bad his first start ever last year . Weak arm QB during NY winters stink.
Not really, Tommy. I'm not comparing college QB's here. I'm comparing what I see on an NFL roster. Tommy, I'll give you an example: When I was in training camp...MANY years ago, we had a guy from Michigan on the roster. Back when Michigan WAS somebody. We had another guy come in from Wake Forest. This guy from Michigan got his ass handed to him on nearly every snap...the guy from Wake Forest went about his business...did what he was told and excelled. At each level there are nuances. Sometimes the most talented or gifted athletes do not translate well. Simply look at the majority of the Heisman winning QB's who never amount to shit on the Pro level. But every so often...and it's not as rare as I earlier stated, but rare enough, that a guy comes along and for whatever reason he's got "it". If we knew what "it" was then the draft wouldn't be such a crap shoot. You want to talk Pedigree...Matt Simms old man won a Superbowl and is arguably the best QB in NY Giants history. I'd be willing to bet Matt Simms hung around those locker rooms too. I'm not saying he's Joe Montana or Peyton Manning...what I am saying is Matt Simms opened my eyes last week in the few snaps he had. Today he opened them again...and drawing upon my personal professional football experience...he has a little bit of that "it" on him. How much...who knows...that's why I want to see more.
Nice arm. But he also forced a terrible throw into triple coverage in the Green & White scrimmage at Cortland vs. the 2's fwiw.
I hear ya man, I am open to seeing what he can do against a teams 1st defense. Personally, i want to see more of what GMac can do, I think he could at least be a solid game manager without all the bonehead Sanchez mistakes
Bullshit. Don't get me started on that one...I can go down the LIST of former players kids who didn't amount to shit, weren't drafted and were never on a Pro roster. Do you REALLY think they just hand those out to anyone because they are someone's kid? This is the big boy league and millions of dollars are in play. You may want to rethink that thought process.
....which is all I'm saying. I'm not anointing anyone. Just an opportunity to sit behind the 1st team line and throw to our 1st team talent. THEN we'll see if the "it" is still there. I like GMac too...I just happen to like Simms arm better.
Yes, absolutely that happens in sports!!! It is on record that Tommy LaSorda only drafted Mike Piazza because he was good friends with his father. Obviously in that case it turned out unbelievably well. Just this year the Yankees drafted Paul O'Neill's nephew and Pettittes son, neither of whom are top, can't miss prospects. How many quarterbacks are on an nfl roster that were 2nd or 3rd string in COLLEGE?!?!? Even the top college qb's or even heisman winning qbs have a hard time making it in the pros, you don't get 2nd stringers man. Look at some of the guys who are 2nd and 3rd string on an NFL roster that were absolute STUDS in college......
This is a real need area for Jets. There RB's beyond Ivory are terrinle. Jets have to sign another F.A. running back. Powell & McKnight is just to weak. So actually, it comes down to McKnight as the weaklink. Jets will just have to find another kick returner.
Sims could be no different than one of my all time favorite players that most of you love who goes by the name Chrebet. He was not even an afterthought of the draft and the Jets only gave him a shot because he was a home town guy. It doesn't matter if you were drafted or even what round you were drafted in, all that matters is what you do when given the chance. Those that watch Hard Knocks might remember a similar line from a couple weeks ago. Chrebet out played Johnson and you couldn't get further from a #1 pick to a local walk on with no real hope of making the team. As we recall the walk on won that battle and our hearts. Give Sims playing time next week and if he does good and Sanchez in truly hurt, start Sims game one. You can always start Smith down the road.
