The competition was never been about who is winning in camp but about is Geno ready to play. Geno is the possible QB of the future and if he is ready to play he plays. Does he have command of the huddle, can he protect, himself and survive in the pocket and can he run the offense in a somewhat efficient manner? Sanchez is a journeyman Rez Grossman or Jason Campbell type QB but just not as talented as either. Sanchez will not be here next year. His job is just to play if Geno cannot play. In regards to the competition. It is more a media created competition where they try to give daily reports to keep it interesting. The story was Geno outplayed Sanchez the first two weeks and then Geno had 2 bad days the week before the Lions game and one "brutal" day before the Jags game. Then the story is Sanchez is trying to save his career. Next it will be Geno comes from Behind. Whatever they can do to get page hits. They want to keep people in suspense. The bottom line is they both have played bad and if we had a mediocre QB like Garrard, Jackson, Campell, Grossman or whomever who could hold the fort a year that QB would be the starter. But we don't. We have a journeyman very bad game manager type QB that lacks the ability to manage a game in Sanchez and a 2nd rd pick that may or may not be ready to play. Given we have the worst QB in league history through his first four years, there is no competition its just a question of when Geno is ready to play.
One can only hope that Manish is correct. It kinda semeed abvious to me when they named Geno starter for Saturday but again, lets hope its true.
So you are saying that to an objective person, those 4 playoff wins that everyone brings up to support Sanchez do not mean much at this point?
After reading the piece, I'm not so sure that it was "rigged" or "farcical" as described. Mehta supposes that Sanchez never had a chance to win the competition, but this appears to be untrue. Sanchez has been given two starts (about four quarters) to show that he's improved. Yes, Smith was competing against himself: he had/has to show that he's ready for the big lights of the NFL. However, Sanchez was also competing against himself: he had the chance to distance himself from the rookie and show that he's grown from his sloppy play. Unfortunately, Sanchez has show the same play that's characterized his entire career. Terrible mistakes (particularly in the short passing game), offset with some very, very nice reads/throws middle/deep between the seam and the sideline. This isn't exactly what you want to see from a fifth year starter, and it is no surprise that Sanchez is losing the competition against himself. Now, the front office is giving Smith a chance to compete against himself -- to show what he can do and that he's ready for NFL prime time. Smith getting a shot isn't bias; it's actually fairness. Moreover, that the front office would hope that Smith would turn out a better performance than the other guy isn't bias. It is what every team should want out of every competition -- it is supposed to bring the best out of each player. The facts cited within the article doesn't mean that the competition is biased. It just means that the metrics are different than those perceived by Mehta. It's not Smith v. Sanchez straight up, more like (Smith v Smith) v (Sanchez v Sanchez), if that makes any sense. Anyways, I'm glad that someone posted it and I didn't give that guy a click. Thanks.
Sweet baby Jesus I hope this turdstain is right for once in his stupid fuckin life. Geno! Geno! Geno!
Idzik was not here for those wins, he didn't watch mark practice and play, he is coming in from the outside w/ Mark coming off a horrendous season. When GMs are hired they usually like to do 2 things- name a HC and pick a QB, he didn't get the chance to name a HC. This is basic football stuff and we are going to try to twist it into some anti-Sanchez thing.
Wait so if the QB who the JETS and new GM Idzik drafted in the 2nd round is ready, they'll play him. No shit. Manish is making this sound like a scandal. In order to draft Geno in the 2nd, they obviously see something in the kid and are obviously not sold on Mark. So obviously if Geno is ready, he will play. I don't quite understand how this is news. Also, don't understand the condescending tone of the article..
hes going to start game 3 because he has to. He has played only I believe a total of 7mins of football in a game. If it wasnt for his ankle being tied down last week, Sanchez would of started this game without a doubt while Geno, the backup would have an opportunity to play late in the 3rd/early 4thQ. But as said throughout the forums this week, I dont think one meaningless preseason game should lead you to starter as an NFL QB, especially as a rookie. With this I believe Sanchez has it already as he will remain the starter come week 1.
Sometimes I wonder if Mehta is actually writing for Giants fans. I think the phrase "rigged" competition is ridiculous in this context. You don't need to "rig" a contest when the winner is based solely on your own opinion. If Smith is healthy and looks ok, he will start Week 1. If he doesn't learn enough and get enough muscle memory in the offseason and preseason to be able to play at an NFL rookie QB level, you roll with Sanchez and give Smith another 8 weeks to learn, then let him take over for the easier second half of the schedule.
This is the best description of Manish I have found: "Manish Mehta is a cancer. Having him cover your team is worse than signing Albert Haynesworth to a $100 million deal and then injecting him with the blood from Aaron Hernandez, Rae Carruth, and Stanley Wilson." That's a comment of PFT from this article, thought it summed up MM quite well.
First, Sanchez' playoff wins mean nothing in this competition nor should they. What Manish is assuming is that this is Mark's job to lose. The fact is he already lost it based on last year's terrible performance. Only by the grace of aguaranteed contract is he even having the opportunity to win the job back. The competition is only half over. Of course Idzik, Rex and the majority of fans want Smith to win. If Geno sh!ts the bed Saturday night, he likely loses the job for now. Mark would get it by default. Sanchez has not exactly went out and made a statement with a great performance. IfSmith plays well, he's going to be the starter.
Rex Ryan is not that dumb to hitch his wagon to the wrong horse. mark sanchez is the best qb option on the roster. if they start geno then I'm convinced Jets is mailing this season in as a transition year.
Its preseason against at times,a shitty Giants secondary. If he rips the Giants, so what. It shouldn't mean based on that vanilla game he should be the starter. I heard other opinions so no need to repeat but to me it wouldnt make sense to start a rookie based on one preseason game.
But it wouldn't be based on one preseason game. It would be based on the fact that they see more in him than they feel that they have in Sanchez. It's not like they've just closed their eyes and haven't paid attention to either of them until this one preseason game and will make a massive decision at that one specific time. They have been watching this TC like hawks and probably reviewing piles and piles of footage (Sanchez from NFL and Geno from college). I remember reading a report early on where Sanchez was saying that he hasn't ever seen so many people from the front office down watching practice and taking notes. You can keep saying that they are 100% basing their decision on one preseason game over and over but it doesn't make it true.
