Well, Eli Manning is actually the only QB in the NFL to have thrown more interceptions than Mark Sanchez over the last 4 years. (Literally one more. Non-believers can check it out on Pro Football Reference. Mark still leads the league in overall turnovers though.) Of course, Eil also throws way more touchdowns and fumbles way less, and he's more accurate, etc, but he has just as much of an interception problem as Mark does. So... if Allen is going to get an interception, now's the time! My hope for Geno in this game is that he completes most of his passes, and doesn't create any turnovers. Hopefully he will also look like he's in command, poised and confident. If he can lead some strong drives and not screw up, I think the starting job is his.
I just want to make clear that I'm just being pessimistic because well it's the best way to take any situation with our Jets. I wanted Sanchez gone after 2011. Don't get me started on last year. It just seems like if Mark does anything right they play it up (Rex really) like he is Peyton suddenly, but Geno has one bad practice, and he's a bust. It's stupid, and maybe just the media driving storylines, but you get the idea. I think Geno can have one turnover and still should be named starter. I hope he has none, but like what's been said already, Mark is basically a complete promise to turn the ball over at minimum once per game. I just read this from yahoo. I didn't see it posted in this thread. (warning, it's mehta) http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/8326 The New York Daily News believes Geno Smith needs just "two turnover-free quarters" in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants to win the Jets' starting job. Beat writer Manish Mehta calls Smith's competition with Mark Sanchez "farcical," and a "charade." Per Mehta, "many people in the organization" still want Smith to start despite his shaky camp and preseason. Most signs suggest Smith isn't ready, but after two years of deteriorating play from Sanchez, Gang Green might not care.
Reality is the QB competition has already set the team back. Regardless of who starts the season neither QB will have gotten the reps necessary to execute a new system. Both Sanchez and Geno have been set up to fail. Based on this reality Sanchez should start until the bye. Sanchez is likely to look good for a game or two until teams have tape on our system and start to adjust. Mark always looks good early before tape is available. Once the adjustment is made and Mark starts to flounder, Geno can start with little pressure and a better grasp of the O. Lets get real neither QB is ready to cleanly execute our new O. The only advantage we have out of the gate is the opposition doesn't have much tape on us. Let Geno sit and learn and put him in when it's our turn to adjust to what D's are doing. The biggest advantage our O has is it's new. Bringing Geno in after a few games gives us that advantage twice. It might get us an extra win or two until teams adjust. Once they do we are going to have issues regardless of who starts.
Start Mark the 1st game, start Geno on the short turnaround against the Pats in game 2 Realistically though, if Geno doesn't look like he has a grasp on the offense, Sanchez has to start no matter how bad people want someone new. If Geno does look like he grasps that offense against NYG though (looks better than Sanchez in Sanchez's first two preseason games), the Jets FO/CS have a very good argument for letting Geno start game 1.
I think it's safe to say Mark won't be here after this season. He could MAYBE be AVERAGE in a different market, but he is done here. The fans have turned on him completely, and deservingly so. I am a very loyal person in general, and especially with my beloved players/teams in sports. I was a huge fan of Mark. I was 100% in for drafting him, got his jersey, have a t- with his ugly face on it, and have a (now broken) sanchez figure.. There comes a point where it just won't ever get better, sort of like a bad relationship. People act like he used to be soooo great before 2 years ago. I'm talking about other people that really are down on Mark now, not just junc, hobbes, and other overly optimistic Sanchez fans. He still has never had even 1 season of an average qb rating of 80. Make anyone, and everyone else a scapegoat all you want, but a real QB would have showed more. All that said, the next QB class is supposed to be very good. I'm not a college guy, so I'm maybe wrongfully going off just word of mouth. We need to see what we have in Geno, and I know 16 games is not enough to really see for sure, but it's what we have to work with. Starting Mark is just putting off the inevitable, while making the future more cloudy in terms of what we should do moving forward. It's like the same thing as the Holmes situation...which I have made a full detailed thread of...in my head..at work. He won't be here after this year, we aren't winning it all this year anyway, so let's just get younger asap, and see what we have with the more untested players.
the fact that geno is starting should say all there needs to be said about their feelings for sanchez. they are doing everything they can to find another qb,now people like mehta will find hidden agendas in this. i.e. idzic is sabotaging rex, idzic wants his guy to win, etc. the simlpe fact is, mark has shown he isn't the guy. the scenario is still in play for geno to win and mcelroy show enough to let mark be cut before the season starts. marks a band aid covering by a wound right right now, its time to rip it off and let the healing start
All we can hope for is that Geno throws a TD and doesn't turn the ball over. If he does that on Saturday we will have our new #1 QB 100%.
I wanna see if Geno can simply pass the eye test. That's all, certain other things I am willing to give him a pass on because he's a rookie.
Not sure if true but I read online earlier today that, if Geno Smith gives us two quarters without a turnover against the Giants, then he'll be named our starting quarterback come week one against Tampa. Just something that I read, not sure if it's smoke up my ass...
That's likely just someones opinion. I highly doubt the coaches would say that and I'm guessing there criteria is far more in depth than some simple stats.
You should take a long look at what you posted....you made that statement it was the most important game of the preseason, not me...most important for who? Gino Smith, from what you seem to be implying? Don't think so. All Rex is doing is to see how Gino fairs against 1st stringers...he missed the entire second game, tihs willl give him some work....has nothing whatsoever to do with Smith getting a foothold on the starting position.
LOL, and from what source? That's ok becuase they'll be no chance of Smith doing mistake free QB'ing against the Giants 1st stringers....
Traditionally the 3rd preseason game IS the most important in terms of pertinence to the 1st teamers. Starters typically play into the 3rd quarter & there is some game planning that transpires. Additionally, you usually see HC/Coordinators trying really hard to gain some momentum & get things right. IE ending on a good note defensively & putting up points offensively.
You take a big look into your crystal ball to determine that? Your ignorance is spewing all over the place with comments like that. Oh and you might want to know how to spell the kids name correctly...
Q: most important for who? A: Most important for every team in the NFL. Q: Gino Smith, from what you seem to be implying? A: Well yes, him too since he can win the starting job. Rex is not putting Geno out there "just to give him some work". He's putting him out there to see if he can start week 1. NFL coaches don't waste 1st team snaps in the 3rd preseason game, especially when installing a new system. You're out of touch with reality if you believe that. I don't think Geno's season is "make or break" based on starting week one. I assume he'll be starting at some point. The question is whether it happens sooner or later.
I have a feeling that Geno will play the first half and maybe a series or two into the second half. The rest will probably go to Sanchez as they try to figure out who THE GUY is.
Let me name for you 10 reasons Jets fans feel Geno should start over Mark: 1. Geno has a rocket arm. 2. Geno is not Mark Sanchez. 3. Geno had a solid college career. 4. Geno is not Mark Sanchez. 5. Geno went 6/7 against the Lions, throwing slant patterns. 6. Geno is not Mark Sanchez. 7. Geno was a leader at WVU. 8. Geno is not Mark Sanchez. 9. Geno seems to have recovered from his ankle injury. 10. Geno is not Mark Sanchez.
DWAZ73: It appears clear Geno Smith will start vs. Giants. He's working with starters for third straight practice. #Jets CLoprestiWFAN: Spadola with a circus grab from Geno during hurry-up drill. Kid continues to impress... #NYJ MMehtaNYDN: Geno Smith is having his way vs Jets defense in hurry-up #nyj BrianCoz: Cromartie just crushed Stephen Hill. Totally unnecessary. Really hurt him. Bush league #NYJ DarrylSlater: Cromartie absolutely crushes Hill on pass to goal line. Mangold gets in Cromartie's face. Offense and defense in each other's grills. SethWalderNYDN: Elsewhere, both Geno and Mark threw TDs on 2-min drills. #nyj
